What is it like to be a father in a family with a child with severe visual impairment

The topic of this thesis is the situation of families with children having severe visual or multiple disabilities, examined from the father's standpoint. The aim of this thesis is to map out (explore) the lives of fathers whose children have severe visual impairments or multiple disabilities from their subjective point of view. The focus will be on the process of accepting disabled children, the fathers' experiences, their behavior and expectations in relation to the children, their spouse / partner and other family members. In addition, the focus will be on their view of the relationship between the larger society and individuals with disabilities, including organizations dealing with this issue. For the purposes of qualitative research "What it is like to be a father whose child has a severe visual impairment," a method of semi-structured interviews for data collection will be used. Phenomenon of active citizenship and its responses in lives of people with intellectual disabilities in the Czech Republic and in selected European countries

In this doctoral dissertation the concept of active citizenship and the possibilities of its fulfilment for people with intellectual disability will be explored through data collected in four European countries - the Czech Republic, Switzerland, Ireland and Sweden. The dissertation is divided into three sections and eleven chapters. In the first section, the epistemological foundations are presented, including the perceived connections between contemporary disability paradigms (special and inclusive education) and active citizenship. It includes relevant key notions necessary to clarify the conceptualisation of disability, specifically intellectual disability and the conceptualisation of citizenship and of active citizenship, in particular. There will be a focus on the issue of human rights and on the policies and Conventions which both advocate for the rights of persons with disabilities, and strive for social change and the establishment of equal opportunities for all people with disabilities. The concept of active citizenship will be explored through the domains of employment, community living and political participation and this will be the main focus of the qualitative research. Support of healthy eating habits through activities of maternity centres

The aim of this thesis is to map the activity of maternity centres in order to find out whether their programme includes the issue of children nutrition and the promotion of healthy eating habits. The work also analyses the awareness of maternity centres clients of the nutrition of children under three years of age and finds out whether the clients receive some information about this issue through the centre's activities. The theoretical part summarises the knowledge of nutrition experts of children under three years of age and the formation of nutritional habits. Speech prevention in kindergarten

The theoretical part of this thesis deals with issues of speech disorder prevention, speech development in children, the most common articulation disorder - dyslalia and possible ways of its prevention. Further on, I focus on various factors contributing to speech development, on the framework educational programme for pre-school education in relation to language and speech and on the actual speech disorder prevention in the nursery school programme. The practical part discusses ways the primary prevention in nursery schools actually works, if the teachers are given sufficient support in this area and whether common practice corresponds with their vision of an ideal prevention delivery. Results will be collected through a questionnaire, additional interviews and literature analysis. The goal of this work is to map teachers' interest and knowledge in the area of primary speech disorder prevention and its relation to postponement of compulsory school attendance. Assessment and Development of Visual Perception in Preschool Children

Thesis Assessment and Development of Visual Perception in Preschool Children responds to the need of broader selection of standardized tools designed for the assessment of actual development of visual perception in preschool children, especially in relation to the assessment of school readiness. The main aim of the thesis is standardization of a new assessment tool. Complementary aim is also to design and evaluate a new intervention program supporting development of selected areas of visual perception for children before and at the beginning of their school attendance. In its theoretical part thesis scrutinizes current findings in the area of visual perception and its relation to basic academic skills, especially reading. The explorative part of thesis presents standardization study based on classical model of Test theory consisting of convergent validity and reliability evaluation of proposed test and setting national norms for four age groups (from 5 to 7 years). Normative group covered 1234 participants.
Readiness of kindergarten on inclusive education for children with visual impairments in the South Bohemian Region

This submitted thesis deals with the exclusive education of kindergarten aged children. The main purpose of this thesis is to chart the preparedness of the kindergarteners for inclusive education of children with visual impairment in the South Bohemian Region. The subject is being processed according to theoretical and practical background of special education and related fields. The researched area of interest is judged on a basis of set conditions based on a concept of inclusive pedagogy. Analysis of the questionnaire research is bringing a view of preschool educators who have experience with the education of children with visual impairment. Examples of good practice are presented, which complement and support a view of information gained with first grade educators, who also have experience with teaching visual impaired children. Outcomes for practice are made as Activities Concepts or children with visual impairments. Concepts are created as suggestions or inspiration for kindergarten educators, where there are visually impaired children. Activities are created so they can be applied throughout the day care centre's routine, and involves the participation of all preschool children.
Attitudes of young people with disabilities to academic education

This thesis deals with issues of level and structure of education of contemporary Czech population with a view to the target group of disabled people. It talks about historical evolution in this field, current trends and available statistical data, which represent it. A prominent theme of the thesis is a lower number of disabled people with university education in comparison with intact population. We will have a short look at supportive measures for students with special needs at Czech universities as well. Then, a part of the thesis is a survey which examines attitudes of young disabled people towards university education. Current problems of a school assistant to a visually impaired student

The material to the thesis is sourced from the author's experience of an assistant to a blind high school student. Analyzing this experience some problems arised. These problems occur especially in the view of the demands placed on the school assistant and current specialized literature and recent special educative recommendations to the assistant to the blind. In this thesis also is offered a less common view of school assistance for the assistance was performed at a secondary school. School assistance at primary education is presumably more common. Single examples in the text show performance of educational and non-educational activities of the autor as a school assistant. The operations were identified as areas of support of the blind student. The operations of the school assistant considered arbitrary actually are reflection of experience of the teaching of the blind that has been systemized in recent methodics.
