Word problems with percentages
Šteflíčková, Alena ; Dvořák, Petr (referee) ; Novotná, Jarmila (advisor)
The topic of this bachelor thesis is word problems with percentages. I deal with the theory of both word problems generally and word problems with percentages in two first parts. I present the basic methods of calculating in the first practical chapter. Other chapters consist of more difficult and complicated word problems, also connected to other types of word problems. Basic financial math is included. I introduce different topics of word problems with percentages in the final chapter. The aim of my thesis is to sort out and divide word problems with percentages used in textbooks and workbooks for primary and secondary schools, so it could be useful for both solvers and pedagogues. Keywords: word problem, percents, percentages
Solving word problems using Venn diagrams
Návarová, Daniela ; Jančařík, Antonín (referee) ; Novotná, Jarmila (advisor)
This bachelor thesis shows the characteristic features of Venn diagrams, whereas its main focus lies in the study of solving various word problems. The first part presents the theoretical descriptions of the most important facts relating to this topic, and these ideas are subsequently expanded from the practical point of view in the second part of the thesis. The main aim of this work is to give a complex survey of the theme including author's own systematic categorisation of the world problems where Venn diagrams can be used. Keywords: word problem, set, Venn diagram
The Influence of a Foreign Language on the Communication in the Bilingual Teaching of Mathematics
Ernyeiová, Jana ; Novotná, Jarmila (advisor) ; Pokorná, Věra (referee) ; Nýdl, Václav (referee)
This work refers to the topic of bilingual mathematics education. It is focused on monitoring the communicational influences of teacher's and pupil's language, categorization of the disturbing effects and possibilities, how the teacher should prepare for them and how to solve them. A significant role plays the reflection of the teacher, as the results were done on the basis of action research during teaching in England, Germany and the Czech Republic. The teaching was realized in a second language as well for the teacher as for the pupils. The teacher was at the same time experimenter as well as author of this work. The theoretical part results from dealing with scientific literature about bilingualism, bilingual education, methodology of CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning), relations between first language, language of mathematics and the foreign language. In the practical part an analysis of lessons performed in mathematics with the subject of probability is carried out. The teaching was focused on playing a game with dice and deciding whether the game is fair or not. The lessons were audio taped and transcriptions of the spoken language were made. An analysis of the language, teacher's mistakes, communicational interference, proportional relations on communication of the pupils and of the...
Mathematical games in French
Bufková, Tereza ; Novotná, Jarmila (advisor) ; Šulista, Marek (referee)
The Mathematical Games in French language My diploma thesis deals with one of the possible strategies in bilingual education - CLIL method, which links teaching of a technical subject and a foreign language - mathematics and French, in this case. As a tool for its implementation, I chose games because I consider them as an entertaining and a very available way of teaching. The aim of this thesis was to find out and to describe the potential of this education at different school levels. At the beginning, I focus on general integration of the technical subject and the foreign language, and then I mention the importance of didactic games and basic terminology of mathematical terms in French. The core of this thesis is my own selection of games in Czech and French language intended for three levels of school. This file was inspired by several mathematical books on didactic games. The gained data have been processed on the base of observation and analysis of individual worksheets. The results show the potential of CLIL method as a new possibility for bilingual teaching of technical subjects.
Influence of language when teaching mathematics through the medium of a foreign language
Obereignerová, Lenka ; Novotná, Jarmila (advisor) ; Šulista, Marek (referee)
This diploma thesis, titled "Influence of language when teaching mathematics through the medium of a foreign language," deals with problems of language influence on success in mathematics. The theoretical part consists of a general definition of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), including its classification, a brief history, psychological aspects, its possible advantages and disadvantages and the potential of CLIL studies at grammar schools in the Czech Republic. The empirical part deals with the original research, composed of the investigation of language influence on solving concrete mathematical problems and of analyzing children's questionnaire data to discover their particular language barriers as they relate to teaching and learning mathematics through the medium of a foreign language. The last chapter, which deals with technical vocabulary acquisition and the proposal of some teaching activities, completes and closes the research. The primary objective of this diploma thesis is to investigate the language influence on teaching mathematics through the medium of a foreign language. This is done by analyzing specialist literature and by performing original research. The information gained should lead to the identification of the language problems that inhibit children's...
Work with Mistake in Mathematics Lessons at French Schools
Zítková, Veronika ; Novotná, Jarmila (advisor) ; Vondrová, Naďa (referee)
The diploma thesis deals with the role of a mistake in the learning process in general, then focuses more concretely on Mathematics lessons. The theoretical part leans on scientific publications that treat the theory of a mistake. This part covers various approaches towards a mistake, an insight into the history and different conceptions of mistake classifications. The practical part is based on a research done at a "lycée" in Paris. The research work contains the corrections (done by students) of a sample written test and the analysis of their answers from the questionnaires. The main goal of the thesis is to think about mistakes done by students and to take advantage of them in the learning process.
Factors influencing how popular mathematics is among primary pupils
Karhanová, Jitka ; Vondrová, Naďa (advisor) ; Novotná, Jarmila (referee)
This thesis focuses on the popularity of mathematics among pupils of a lower secondary school and factors affecting it. Specifically, pupils' self-concept in mathematics and pupils' initial feelings towards mathematics, the importance of mathematics for their future, the personality of mathematics teachers and his/her teaching skills, class climate and pupils' parents' feelings towards mathematics. The theoretical part deals with the processing and interpretation of the various factors that may affect the popularity of mathematics for pupils, as given in literature. Research results of this area on both international and national scales are presented. The practical part is devoted to my research conducted on factors influencing the popularity of mathematics. The research was carried out via a quantitative questionnaire method. The pilot study served to verify the suitability of designed questionnaires. The results of the main study are carefully discussed (given an opportunistic sample of pupils) in terms of my hypotheses and compared to the results of the international research by the OECD/PISA 2003. Among the factors that influence the popularity of mathematics among pupils most is the influence of teachers' approach and of parents and a pupil's self-concept.
Analysis of the Initial Implementation of CLIL in Mathematics Lessons
Šulista, Marek ; Novotná, Jarmila (advisor) ; Klečková, Gabriela (referee) ; Favilli, Franco (referee) ; Nýdl, Václav (referee)
The thesis deals with the teaching of mathematics in English language as one possible application of CLIL, which indicates the non-language teaching (professional) courses in a language other than mother tongue. The work is divided into 7 chapters and a total of 8 annexes. Introductory chapters acquaint the reader with the goal of the study, selected terminology from the field of language learning and bilingualism, with CLIL - its history in the world and the Czech Republic, typical teaching strategies used in teaching CLIL, its models, benefits and research associated with the teaching of mathematics with this method. Further work presents the results of a survey of teachers of basic mathematics middle schools and mapped their experiences and views on teaching mathematics in a foreign (target) language. At the end of this chapter are specified research questions and sub-as of work. The main research questions are formulated, to what extent the influence of foreign language understanding of mathematics at an early stage in the implementation of CLIL lessons Mathematics in compliance with the scope and time spent in the classroom as a substance in a given degree in their own language. A tool for obtaining answers the research question 11a was chosen experimental selected mathematical teaching curriculum that...
