Social Skills of English Teachers in Educational Interactions at Secondary Schools

The aim of the dissertation is to define the requisite social skills of the English language teacher as a part of his/her professional competence, in the context of communicative language teaching in classroom interactions at secondary schools. The theoretical part is divided into four chapters. The first chapter addresses the processes involved in foreign language learning and acquisition. It first defines the linguo-didactic framework of the dissertation in terms of the functional communicative approach to language and communicative language teaching. The second chapter deals with the processes of interaction and communication at school with an emphasis on foreign language teaching. Attention is paid to functions and content of educational interactions as practised by the main stakeholders - the teachers and their adolescent pupils. The specifics of foreign language educational interaction and its social features are illustrated. The third chapter seeks to define social skills and their relationship to other skills in the professional competence of the English teacher. Czechoslovak community in Argentina: beginning and present state

The diploma thesis deals with descendant issue of Czechoslovakian immigrants, whose ancestors massively began to migrate to Argentina during the interwar period. It is estimated that more than 30 000 people with Czechoslovak roots came into this Latin American country by the mid-40s of last century, what makes, after the United States and Canada, the largest destination of Czechoslovak emigration overseas so far. The main attention in this diploma thesis is dedicated to compatriot and compatriotic associations in Buenos Aires and Presidencia Roque Sáenz Peña, which represent two most important centres of compatriotic presence in Argentina. The thesis maps the transformation of particular compatriotic associations in explored localities, their current situation and perception of Czech origin by present compatriots according to particular generations.

Influence of local heating to PM10 levels in urban atmosphere

This master thesis evaluates the spatial variability of concentrations of PM10 on the area of towns Mladá Boleslav, Kosmonosy and small village Plazy during one month in the winter of 2013. Using a network measurements, we tried to determine whether sources of pollution are inside the city, or whether these harmful substances are transferred from the outside of the city to the area of the city. For the measurements we used a set of 9 portable laser nephelometers DustTrak (8520, TSI), which were placed on the roofs of schools. In the same time the device called beta-prachoměr (beta dust-meter) was continuously measuring concentrations of PM10, and we also monitored basic meteorological parameters (temperature, humidity, wind speed and direction). All these parameters were continuously measured at five minutes intervals. Also we did personal walks through the city, during which we measured personal exposure to PM10 concentrations. This exposure was compared with exposure of stationary monitors, and finally the differences were quantified. In Mladá Boleslav and in Kosmonosy, the same trend of concentrations of PM10 was observed at all selected locations in the city. Intercultural Communicative Competence ICC Development in Student Teachers of English Language

The aim of this dissertation is to assess the development of intercultural communicative competence in student teachers of English language within a study subject Intercultural Communicative Competence taught at the Department of English and American Studies at the University of Pardubice. Firstly, the terminology to be used throughout the text is defined. Consequently, relevant theoretical foundations are introduced, especially philosophical foundations as well as foundations in linguistics and foreign language didactics. These indicate the position from which we approach the discussed phenomenon, i.e. interculturality that in the current globalized world poses new demands not only on pedagogical practice, but on research too. In the subsequent part of the dissertation focus lies on intercultural education, the key aim of which is defined as development of intercultural communicative competence. Current trends in intercultural education are discussed with accent on the specifics of English language teaching and learning. Influence of Student Needs on Designing Course Content

The objective of this dissertation is to contribute to foreign language teaching methodology based on the practical skills acquired by the author in the course of her classroom-centered lecturing environment in English at the Faculty of Transport, Pardubice University. To be able to sufficiently complete the above objective, a lecturer must implement up-to-date teaching methods; in other words, s/he has to pursue the learner-centered approach to teaching. The paper is divided into two main parts. The first deals with the characteristic features of the learner-centered language acquisition methodology approach (in which the core of the teaching is a student's need). This part focuses on the fundamentals of language teaching focused on the professional needs of technically orientated students. In the second part the author seeks to verify several hypotheses in the process of defending the thesis that a language teacher's reflection on a learner's language learning 'needs analysis' impacts significantly on certain aspects of language teaching. Developing communicative competence through online discussion tasks: computer mediated communication and the skill of writing

This dissertation deals with the developing and development of EFL learners' communicative competence in writing in a blended learning course. The dissertation addresses issues related to the conceptualization of developing communicative competence and measuring learners' progress as well as using ICT in foreign language teaching. The underlying research question was whether learners' communicative competence changed after using a series of online discussion tasks, and if so, in what manner. The empirical research was conducted as a case study in which 18 learners in an EFL course at the CEFR A2 level participated in three discussion tasks conducted online, using asynchronous discussion forum. The discussions were built on social constructivist learning theories. Methods of data collection and analysis included pre- and post-tests, learner corpus compiled from the texts written by the students in two online discussions and its analysis, and a questionnaire survey. The results showed that learners' overall level of communicative competence in writing improved. Specifically, the syntactic complexity of learners' language produced at the beginning and at the end of the course increased and learners' perceived fluency in writing improved. What are diferences between parks and gardens and natural ecosystems

This work highlights the importance of green spaces in an urban environment not only for human and his activities, but especially for the biotic element of environment. To these artificial ecosystems, despite their non-productive function, people provide deluxe services such as irrigation and fertilization. This is also reflected in the change of biogeochemical cycles, especially the carbon and nitrogen cycle. The work focuses on the issue of expansion of non-native plant and animal species and extrusion of native species from their natural habitat. By this process the native species are highly threatened in urban environments. The questionnaire survey examined the ability of the respondents, how they can detect semi-natural ecosystems from artificial ecosystems, which have been divided into several categories (choices for artificial ecosystems were: ornamental, romantic and close to nature parks and gardens and choices for natural ecosystems were: forest ecosystems, forest steppe, grassland and aquatic ecosystems). There were examined also emotions, which were invoked by different types of landscapes at respondents, and their preference for self-relaxation in different types of landscapes. World Englishes and English as a Lingua Franca: a reflection of global paradigmatic changes in the Czech Republic.

Introduction: Presently, there are more people who speak English as a second and foreign language than there are native speakers. This situation results, among others, in the fall of the native speaker model and subsequently in gradually changing attitudes to standard(s) and to language and teaching authorities in general. Present thesis reflects these current developments, which are sometimes referred to as 'a paradigmatic shift'. Objectives: The first goal of the thesis was to decipher the terminological pluralism pertinent to the domain. Next, this research set out to investigate, how familiar the phenomenon of English as a lingua franca (ELF) is in the Czech Republic, and consequently to raise awareness about it. Finally, it was our goal to conduct vast research exploring if and how the questions of language ideology are reflected in the teaching practice and in teacher training. Methodology: Both quantitative and qualitative research methods have been applied throughout the research process. The quantitative research included nine originally devised questionnaires. Analysis of the practical training in the context of structuring of teacher education programs Abstract The dissertation focuses on the issue of preparatory education of the teachers with emphasis on the structuring effects of teacher education programs and practical training. Its aim is to analyse and compare the concepts, parameters, processes and effects of teaching practise models that result from unstructured and structured learning program of the teacher training for lower secondary schools, in the context of the vocational development of the students of teaching. By means of the analysis of the current state of the practical preparations was to contribute to the discussion of issues concerning preparatory teacher training. It offers starting points of the current teacher education, characterizes parallel and subsequent models of the teacher preparation and the resulting implications for teaching practice. Furthermore, initial teacher education in the context of the countries of the European and its trends, historical insight into the teacher training in the Czech Republic.
