Pivot to Asia: Case Study of American Democracy Promotion in Myanmar, 2011 - 2016
Grmelová, Lucie ; Kucer, Maxim (advisor) ; Hornát, Jan (referee)
Promotion of democracy, a traditional tool of American foreign policy, was used also during Barack Obama's presidency through open dialogues and mutual cooperation also with non- democratic nations. The United States during Obama's administration renewed and connected diplomatic relations with countries that were overlooked by previous American administrations. This thesis is focusing on the foreign policy concept during Obama's second term, namely Pivot to Asia. Support of universal values and democracy was one of the central pillars of this policy. The main goal of this thesis is to argue if concentrated American presence and activity in 2011-2016 in Southeast Asia either supported democratic growth or led to democratic backsliding in the region. Specifically, Myanmar had gone through major political transformation since 2011. Ruling junta implemented reforms that opened up space for democratic opposition in the country and reduced sanctions and the policy of isolation from many Western states. Changes within Myanmar government in 2011-2016, American policy towards Myanmar, and normalization of American-Myanmar relations are three examples used in this case study that provides concrete approaches of American administration within Pivot to Asia.

Partnership in Development - A case study of USAID and Sida
Zemanová, Nikola ; Hornát, Jan (advisor) ; Weiss, Tomáš (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with the topic of partnership in development cooperation. In particular, partnerships between development cooperation providers are nowadays being discussed very often, as this type of partnership is playing an increasingly important role in achieving global goals. However, the ambiguity of the concept remains a problem, which is reflected in the uncertainty of translating the theoretical engagements resulting from the partnership into practice. The bachelor thesis examines the issue of partnership between development co-providers at the theoretical level, and contains a case study to provide answers to questions about the importance and possible need to conclude international partnerships. The case study is based on two major development agencies: USAID (International Agency for International Development) and Sida (Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency) whose Power Africa Partnership established a successful Beyond the Grid Fund for Zambia project exploration. The Power Africa initiative is basically one of the largest public-private partnerships in the history of development cooperation.

Mikšovská, Kristýna ; Hornát, Jan (advisor) ; Raška, Francis (referee)
The Bachelor's thesis deals with the changes of the U.S. counterterrorism strategy during the presidency of George W. Bush and Barack Obama. The main purpose is to compare the pre-emption strategy with the diplomatic one, regarding the fight against terrorism. After the 11/9/2001 attacks, the threat of terrorism became the number one priority to all U.S. federal institutions responsible for ensuring security. The terrorist organization responsible for the events of 9/11 was Al-Qaeda, therefore it's activity is main subject for this analysis. Since then, the American counterterrorism strategy went through major changes and during the analysed period it went through further development. The text records mainly the period of 2001 - 2015. The main sources are doctrinal documents published frequently by each administration, and legislation released as a response to 9/11. The conclusion tries to evaluate, which part or parts of counter-terrorism strategy of each president were different from their rhetoric and whose approach was more convenient. Plan Colombia in context of american War on Drugs and War on Terror
Kvačková, Karolína ; Hornát, Jan (advisor) ; Raška, Francis (referee)
This bachelor thesis is concerning Plan Colombia, U.S. initiative to help Colombian State to fight drugs - its production, trafficking and selling. Nonetheless within the years the so called War on Drugs turned into initiative fighting insurgency groups as well, including FARC, ELN and AUC. Main goal of this research is to proof that Plan Colombia can be sorted to War on Drugs as well as War on Terror which occurred after the 11th of September 2001. This hypothesis is supported by three arguments. Firstly, the U.S. approach to counternarcotic changed. We can see the change especially in U.S. legislative, which changed directly after 11th September and the Plan Colombia with it. Second argument is based on fact that the financing of the program clearly changed in 2002 to more military based budget. And as last argument stands the ineffectiveness of the Plan on counterdrug bases. That is linked to the lack of assistance in development projects which backed up the eradication program. In the thesis the arguments are deeply examined and on the basis of these arguments I think I confirmed my hypothesis. Even though we have to note that Plan Colombia in action before 11th of September is not applicable since the there were no such circumstances as after that date.
