Sources and evaluation of variability of mechanical properties of coarse-grained soils

This thesis builds on the work of Dr. Radek Suchomel (2011), which dealt with the use of probabilstic methods in geomechanics and discusses the issues associated with inaccuracies in laboratory experiments. For this purpose it was necessary to design and prepare a set of laboratory experiments so as to obtain sufficient data for evaluation, calibrated, hypoplastic constitutive model, which is defined parameters φc, hs, n, ec0, ei0, ed0, α and β. On the basis of these parameters, the data was compared. For this purpose it was appropriate to 40 measuring the angle of repose, 40 triaxial tests and 40 oedometric tests on coarse-grained soil that was sand with missed fraction < 0.063 mm fraction and without fraction > 3 mm, which was classified as the same grain soil, poorly sorted. On this soil is managed successfully to evaluate fully the parameters for 38 samples. Two samples failed to calibrate only the parameters α and β. Test results and subsequent calibration of parameters hypoplastic constitutive model intended that observed variability affects the resulting values of eight parameters hypoplastic constitutive model, which is largely discussed, where there is a comparison with data of Suchomel (2011). This theoretical thesis focuses on the works of interpreting theorist Franz Pöchhacker. It examines the theoretical underpinnings of his work and analyses both his theoretical work and empirical research in his main fields of interest. Following a chronological order, the thesis covers Pöchhacker's work in the field of conference simultaneous interpreting, which he perceives as a complex action, the development of his interest in quality assessment in interpreting and community interpreting, as well as Pöchhacker's view of Interpreting Studies and its classification according to various parameters. The thesis also provides an overview of the most significant critical reactions to Pöchhacker's work. Finite and participial postmodifiers in spoken academic discourse: natural and social sciences

The subject of the present study is a comparison of two postmodifying constructions in noun phrases - finite relative adnominal clauses with the subject gap and nonfinite participial clauses - in spoken academic discourse: natural and social science. The comparison is based on the fact that both constructions realize the same clause element, i.e. a postmodifier in a noun phrase. The aim of the present study is thus to present major characteristics and functions of finite relative clauses and their reduced counterparts with respect to their distribution across the two subregisters of spoken academic discourse. The study is divided into three main parts: the theoretical background (Chapter 2) which defines the major characteristics and functions of the two postmodifying constructions and their mutual relationship, as are presented in the literature; the main part (Chapters 3 and 4) which provides the analysis of finite relative clauses and participial postmodifiers; and conclusion in Chapter 5.
The use of stereographic methods for evaluation of stability of rock masses

The work demonstrates the use of stereographic methods for examples of rock mechanics. It explaines stereographic principles, use of Wulf's nets, presents solutions of geometric problems using construction and Wulf's nets and it explains the use of stereographic methods for solving stability of rock slopes. The work can serve as a textbook for students of engineering geology on subject of Rock mechanics. Practical part includes measurements of discontinuities on the highway D1 near Lensedly and investigates the occurrence of unstable wedge blocks.
Analýza sexuálního feromonu ovocných mušek rodu Ceratitis fasciventris, Ceratitis anonae a Ceratitis rosa

Ceratitis fasciventris, Ceratitis anonae and Ceratitis rosa are polyphagous agricultural pests originating from African continent. Their behaviour is heavily altered by pheromones. Insect chemical communication channels are species-specific, represents taxonomic and reproduction barriers. Taxonomy of this group (so-called Ceratitis FAR complex) is unclear. Therefore new chemical approaches along with genetic tests for identification of entities within the cryptic species FAR complex are being developed. To study multi-component mixtures of male volatiles originating from the three mentioned fruit fly species, comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography with time- of-flight mass spectrometer (GC×GC-TOFMS) was used. A number of compounds were identified, out of which 23 were found to be distributed and shared among the studied species, 11 out of these were present in all three species. Analyses of male pheromone volatiles, using gas chromatography combined with electroantennographic detector (GC-EAD) revealed 4 common compounds with antennal activity shared among three studied species: methyl (E)-hex-3-enoate, 6-methylhept-5-en-2- one, linalool, and methyl (2E,6E)-farnesoate. The influence of vegetation and succession age on pedogenesis in sand pits.

Sand Pits have great potential to restore via spontaneous succession. There are not many studies of the development of soils in sand pits; therefore, this work focuses on the development of soil properties in sand pits comparing technically reclaimed sites and sites with primary succession. 120 samples were collected at fourteen sand pits in South Bohemia and selected soil properties were assessed. The surveyed plot were grouped according to age, and the successional and technically reclaimed sites were distinguished. The results were evaluated by analysis of variation and regression analysis. The differences in soil bulk density, pH, thickness of soil organic horizon, Cox, N and C/N ratio between reclaimed and spontaneously restored sites of different age were analysed. The bulk density and pH decrease significantly on successional sites; however, the reclaimed sites do not show signifiant differences. Organic horizon thickness increases with age on both types of sites.Cox, N and C/N ratio do not show significant influence age. Lower values of Cox, N and C/N were measured in initial stages of succession. Nutrient budget in reclaimed and non reclaimed heaps

Extraction of mineral resources causes landscape degradation and the aim of reclamation efforts is to restore ecosystems. Our research was carried out on spoil heaps after brown coal mining near Sokolov (Czech Republic). We compared twenty years old spontaneously developed sites and reclaimed sites afforested by alders Alnus glutinosa and A. incana. Biomass and nutrient budget were evaluated for herbs and woody plants, separately for species Salix caprea, Populus tremula and Alnus glutionosa. Alder showed significantly higher concentrations of nitrogen and carbon compared to other tree species. The total amount of biomass, carbon and nitrogen was higher on reclaimed sites whereas phosphorus was more represented on spontaneously developed sites. Most of nitrogen was accumulated in the below-ground tree biomass and the largest amount of phosphorus was in the above-ground tree biomass. Woody plants of non-reclaimed sites produced more litter whilst litter of alder stands showed a higher concentration of nitrogen. Higher values of biomass, carbon and nitrogen of reclaimed sites were probably achieved through alder ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen.
FGM in Contemporary Egypt and Sudan: Literary Reflections

This thesis describes the phenomenon of female genital mutilation (FGM) in Northeastern Africa, focusing on Egypt, Somalia and the Sudan. The core of the thesis lies in literary reflections of this practice and analysis of literary works tackling this subject. Presenting a wide range of literary works on the subject, this thesis aims at classifying and comparing them, with a special emphasis on the works of Nawal el Saadawi and Nuruddin Farah. The thesis also presents a summary of current local and international laws on FGM as well as a list of organisations dealing with FGM. It also briefly describes the religious background of FGM and current situation in Egypt and the Sudan.

Characterization of indoor air in health care buildings

Hospitals and healthcare facilities are very specific times of microenvironments, which requiring monitoring air quality. People who use healthcare facilities are due to a weakened immune system very sensitive to air quality. Acceptable indoor air quality in healthcare facilities may have adverse effects on job performance at the personnel and their errors may have very serious consequences. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the main components of the inner microclimate (temperature and relative air humidity) and concentrations of carbon dioxide in the environment of selected healthcare facilities in the Czech Republic and to compare the results with the related legislation. The measurements were carried out in two hospitals and nine private medical offices from December 2011 to March 2013. The results showed that the values of microclimate factors and the concentration of carbon dioxide in the environment of patient rooms were different in cold and warm part of the year. In the patient rooms the levels of relative humidity diverged from the legal requirements mostly in winter - while those of temperature in summer.
