Theme of memory in A History of the World in 10 1/2 Chapters by Julian Barnes

The objective of this dissertation is to explore the theme of memory and its impact on how we tend to re-create and perceive history, as reflected in the book A History of the World in 10 and ½ Chapters. The goal is to interpret each chapter and make a plausible inference as to what the author intended to communicate concerning the postmodernist view of history. The theoretical groundwork of the thesis draws primarily on Hayden White's Metahistory; Paul Ricœur's La mémoire, l'histoire, l'oubli and Temps et Récit. Tome I. Other sources include interviews with Julian Barnes, Conversations with Julian Barnes by Vanessa Guignery; an essay by Frank Kermode, Stowaway Woodworm and of course the novel itself. Jewish community in Strakonic

anglicky Jewish community in Strakonic This bachelor's thesis focuses on the fate and welfare of the Jewish community of the city of Strakonice. In the first part is a brief presentation of Strakonice city and the introduction of the Jewish community in the Czech Republic. Here is described the activity of the local Jewish community and the livelihood of the Jewish population. In Strakonice these inhabitants excelled especially in the textile sector and celebrated their success abroad as well. In the second part are recorded four stories of Jewish people. The main objective is to show the stories of witnesses who experienced the World War II period and each one of them had a different faith. Studená during the Second World War

The first mention of village Studená dates from 1356, yet this area was populated earlier, specifically since the 10th century. Its greatest development village underwent before the World War II., when there was the greatest number of inhabitants and various companies were established. The work is dedicated to the life in the Studená during the Second World War; however it is mainly focused on the beginning and the end of the war, when the inhabitants were most affected by the acts of war.
