1 Illegal drugs in the Czech Republic: regulation or prohibition? Abstract As part of the noble effort to eliminate drugs as a global phenomenon that has accompanied mankind almost since time immemorial, prohibition is clearly the most dominant policy applied worldwide. However, given that rigidly restrictive legislation does not lead to the desired results, which are, in particular, the reduction of drug trafficking and the reduction of global consumption, this simple reasoning would lead one to conclude that it is a failed approach. However, success can be perceived in very relative terms and must always be compared with an alternative, and it is only when they are compared that a true evaluative statement of success can be made. Prohibition fails, but is there a better alternative? Drug prohibition and its enforcement imposes significant costs on society as a whole, while it itself completely eliminates some potential sources of public revenue that could offset these and other costs. The aim of this thesis was to provide guidance as to whether, in the context of the Czech Republic, it might be more appropriate to legalise some selected illicit drugs in the context of the high costs of prohibition, specifically focusing on cannabis, ecstasy, LSD, methamphetamine, cocaine and heroin. Social work with mothers using illegal drugs

The bachelor thesis deals with the issue of drug addiction - both on a general level and for the addicted mothers with children specifically. In the introduction is presented the basic framework of drug addiction, how addiction can be defined and also recognized. Then, for the overall context of the topic, I present how the drug problem is approached at the international level and within the Czech Republic, including regulation of drugs use in the Czech legislation. In the context of prevention, I describe ways, in which this problem can be prevented. The next part of the thesis deals with the issue of drug addiction among women. Here I introduce the factors, leading to the development of addiction, what other problems may be associated with drugs use, what makes the addiction in the case of women specific, and then I move on to the effects of the mother's drugs use on the child, mentioning the rights of the child, who finds itself in a such situation and how it can be protected from the problems, caused by it's mother. In the last chapter, I describe social work with drugs users, what specific social services these people can use, and finally I deal with social support and reintegration for mothers, struggling with having drugs problem. Crossing the line behind the stage: drugs in theatre

This thesis explores a specific discourse on cocaine non-use/use in the theatre environment, specifically among students and graduates of an arts college in the 20-30 age group. Thus, the research focuses on the use of psychotropic substances in a relatively privileged context. Through a phenomenological research design, an understanding of the lived experience of the actors is achieved. The data was collected through thirteen in-depth interviews. Respondents included non-users, occasional users, people in outpatient treatment and former drug distributors. The study explores how actors perceive experiences with particular drugs and how they define the boundaries of acceptability within psychotropic substance use. The thesis also focuses on what users consider essential during the act of use itself. Special attention is then given to economic relations, drug distribution and perceptions of illegality. The work also touches on the experience of abstinence and outpatient treatment. In addition to describing use in a specific theatrical setting through the eyes of the actors themselves, it is revealed how substance use is normalized in this group and how the actors (dis)define themselves from the socially supported discourse.

Different prevalence of substance abuse at different types of music events: comparison of drum and bass party and rock concert in Prague

The objective of my bachelor's paper is to determine, through the use of a terrain study, if visitors of drum and bass parties prefer addictive substances more than visitors of rock concerts. I conducted a terrain study in Prague and the assumption was that the type and quantity of addictive substances would vary. The theoretic section of my work is focused on characteristics of individual music genres and their supporters, further mentioned are addictive substances used at music events and their subsequent risks and impact on the person taking them and the environment around them. The conclusion of the theoretical section is about harm reduction services, hints at their usefulness, and also on the lack thereof in the music genre environment. The practical section is dedicated to the analysis of data gathered by me in a terrain study conducted directly on music events of a given genre. Respondents were given a short questionnaire and then all data was analyzed by me. Respondents were chosen deliberately, they had to have been a supporter of the given genre, therefore I worked with an unrepresentative sample. Drug policy in the ex-Soviet states after the introduction of new policies in the West

Ever since the fall of the Soviet Union, illicit drugs have begun flowing into the former Soviet states for local sale and consumption, as well as for further transit to Western European states. Though the former Soviet states claim to be dedicated to the global fight against drugs, their alleged connections to the criminal underworld and weak and underdeveloped state institutions raise doubts over the sincerity and capacity of their effort. In this diploma thesis the impact of illicit drugs and the depth of the state-crime nexus in the Former Soviet Union region is analyzed, also covering crime-terror nexus, crucial in understanding the crime-terror relationship for mutual profit. The study's results have shown that various FSU states have shown varying degrees of connection to the criminal world, posing an international security risk due to the criminal underworld's involvement with clandestine drug trade in connection with terrorist groups.

Controlled ilicid drug use among adolescents.

The bachelor thesis deals with the controlled use of illegal drugs among adolescents. This thesis consists of the theoretical and the empirical part. The theoretical part describes the summary of existing knowledge in the field of the controlled using. The summary is focused on the models of controlled drug use, rules among controlled drug users, possibilities of control over different illegal drugs or typology of controlled drug users. Additionally the theoretical part is discussing the adolescent age, which is further described in the context of use of addictive substances. Empirical part has a character of qualitative research. Data were obtained by semi-structured interview. The goal of this thesis is to provide a view on illegal drug use by adolescents through phenomenon of controlled use. Particularly it seeks to find the circumstances and conditions of controlled drug use, rules of controlled drug users, motives behind illegal drug use and the means, which drug users employ to deal with the withdrawal symptoms.

Abuse of illegal drugs by student of University of South Bohemia

The thesis research the frequency of illegal drugs use by student sof Univerzity of South Bohemia in the Czech Budějovice. In the theoretical part are characterized by drugs, illegal drugs and the effects of drug use on health, describes the emergence of drug addiction and its types and developmental stages of drug use. Furthermore, illegal drugs are divided into categories according to their effects and further described. The main aim of the practical part is the analysis of illegal drug use by students of the University of South Bohemia. On the basis of a questionnaire compiled data was found and it was statistically analyzed by the method, compares and conclusions were drawn. Over the past year have used an illegal drug 37.83% of respondents, that 2.91% of the respondents use illegal drugs daily. Earlier experience with illegal drugs has 18.78% of students of the University of South Bohemia. Past experience with drugs is more common in women, while use in the last year is much more common in men. The most commonly used substances are cannabinoids, as well as hallucinogens, opiates and finally stimulanci.

Estimation of drug trade as a part of illegal economy

Drug trade is a part of non-observed economy in the system of national accounts. Estimations of drug trade were made from demand side based on estimation of drug consumption. This needs estimations of drug users, which was possible to estimate from drug use prevalence in last year. Several surveys done in society were the data source. Other information from the surveys was information about frequency of drug use. Several research studies gave information about consumed drug quantity by one opportunity. Police and customs have a common database about drug seizures. The database is source for information about import and export of drugs, drug purities by production or import and by consumption or export. Police reports drug prices also. The physical indicators of the drug trade are recalculated by wholesale and retail prices into financial indicators, which are possible to record into system of national accounts.
