Ape Boards
Kvardová, Kateřina ; Kloss, Jan (referee) ; Houf, Václav (advisor)
Ape Boards is my own newly formed label, which manufactures snowboards and kiteboards. For this thing I have proposed a substantial logotype, which has a function as a unifying element across the whole brand and designs boards. Website (www.apeboards.com). A first collection of snowboards and kiteboards from which I had made 7 pieces for a thesis. Designs do not 'mass' lust, because the objective is not a big production or promotion, but based on what I liked. From the minimalism through the color geometry to the gorillas, according to which the brand was named.

Media representation of the "Gorilla" case in slovak and czech media
Midulová, Katarína ; Nečas, Vlastimil (advisor) ; Křeček, Jan (referee)
The diploma thesis deals with media representation of Slovak political case "Gorilla" in Slovak and Czech print dailies. The thesis builds upon the theoretical principles of the relationship between politics and media in a given societal system, media framing of political news, and normative aspects of balance in the news. A definition of scandal follows as well as description of fundamental characteristics of promotion in the media of political scandals in particular. The thesis aims at application of this theoretical basis on the aforementioned case and its empirical verification. The empirical research includes source analysis and an evaluation of the source balance. A quantitative content analysis is used for these purposes. The results show an intense media coverage of the case and a major media focus on elite (political) resources as well as a frequent representation of particular political actors at the expense of others (related to the case). The results also demonstrate that media did not reflect the fact, that the authenticity of the Gorila document which was the origin of the case was not officially proven at the time.
Communication Skills of Apes with Humans
Valterová, Bára ; Hlaváčová, Lucie (advisor) ; Vančata, Václav (referee)
This work is a literature search on the ability of apes to communicate not only among themselves but especially with people. Its goal is to clear up the level of this communication ability as well as to discuss different ways how to teach apes such communication. The introduction deals with the systematics of the superfamily Hominoidea and the specific characteristics of its groups. Next part is about the level of the apes' intraspecific (ape-to-ape) communication and their ability of logical thinking. The main part of the work consists of a detailed study of particular experimental projects dedicated to the abilities of apes to communicate with humans. These projects were trying to teach apes to speak English (e.g. project Gua) or to teach them an artificial language (e.g. project Sarah) or to teach them American Sign Language for deaf-mute people (e.g. project Washoe). The studied projects show that at least some apes educated in captivity are able to understand spoken English and to actively use the sign language or a graphic symbol based language. They can use hundreds of signs in such languages, they are likely to use a simple grammar and they are able to put together sentences with more than three words. Moreover, they are able to create new terms on their own, to categorize and to use...

Gravidita western lowland gorilla Gorilla gorilla gorilla in captivity
Kubů, Pavlína ; Masopustová, Renata (advisor) ; Kracíková, Olga (referee)
This bachelory work is focused on analyzing and compiling available knowledge and findings regarding the process of gravidity in gorillas of subspecies Western Lowland Gorilla Gorilla gorilla gorilla bred in captivity and it is divided into seven prime parts. Taxonomic inclusion of the genus Gorilla is not stabilised yet. According to the newest taxonomy of mammals we distinguish two species of the genus Gorilla, Eastern Gorilla Gorilla beringei and Western Gorilla Gorilla gorilla. Most commonly bred species in captivity is subspecies of Western Gorilla Gorilla gorilla, Western Lowland Gorilla Gorilla gorilla gorilla. Wild populations of Western Lowland Gorilla occur in several states of Central Africa. Up to 23rd of March there are 797 individuals of subspecies Gorilla gorilla gorilla bred in captivity and approximately more than half of them are being bred in captivity on the European continent. Europe is simultaneously the most successful region in reproduction of the Western Lowland Gorillas. Diet composition of this subspecies in the wild consists of food with high level of dietary fibre and low content of calories. On the other hand in captivity the diet composition is reversed which can directly affect the reproduction. Reproductive organs of male and female gorillas resembles the human reproductive organs by its shape and placement. During oestrus the female gorilla changes her behaviour and she tries to be attractive for the male and thereby attain the copulation with subsequent gestation. While mating, gorillas use two main positions with many variations. In captivity there can supervene complications with gestation, therefore assisted reproduction is commonly used technique. First young gorilla spawned by assisted reproduction was successfully bred in 1995 thanks to IVF method in captivity. The duration of gravidity of female gorillas is approximately 250 to 260 days. Symptoms of gestation in Western Lowland Gorillas as the growing abdomen or edema of the breast are present around second or third month before delivery. The parturition usually occurs during the night, starts with first contractions and ends with leaving of placenta. Social relationships are constantly changing within the group in accordance with different situations. After the birth of young gorilla, all of the members of the group become more closer to each other and the mother seeks company of the dominant male gorilla who can protect her offspring against the attacks of other individuals from the group or male gorillas from other groups. A female gorilla who has an offspring at the same time is superior to a female gorilla without an offspring.
