Ladka, Marcel ; Miessler, Jan (advisor) ; Křeček, Jan (referee)
The diploma thesis titled "Media as a Pillar of Democracy: the Austrian Government Crisis in 2019 and the Role of the Media on the Example of Der Spiegel and Süddeutsche Zeitung" focuses on the analysis of the role of the media in democratic societies, specifically during the Austrian government crisis in 2019. The main object of investigation are two important German media - the newspaper "Süddeutsche Zeitung" and the magazine "Der Spiegel". The main methodological tool is discourse analysis, through which the author analyses the discourses and contexts used in the analysed articles. This method provides a deep understanding of the content and style of reporting, but also of the meanings and contexts targeted by the media. In the theoretical part of the thesis, the author presents theoretical approaches to the role of the media in a democratic society. The thesis also discusses the media system in Germany, which is important for understanding the background and functioning of the media analysed. In the analytical part of the thesis, the author examines specific articles from the two mentioned media. The aim is to find out which discourses were used to present the Austrian government crisis and how these events were reflected. This part provides a detailed insight into the relationship between...

Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) and its European policy 1986-2007
Ježková, Simona ; Kunštát, Miroslav (advisor) ; Mejstřík, Martin (referee)
This master's thesis, titled Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) and its Approach to European Integration 1986-2007, analyses an era of twenty-plus years in which the party, led by Jörg Haider, underwent a major ideological shift. The FPÖ abandoned its original liberal pro-European position and, in the 1990s, became a Eurosceptic populist movement akin to the far right. This work aims to assess whether these shifts can be described using the theories formulated by Paul Taggart and Aleks Szczerbiak and by Nick Sitter - who postulate that a party's participation in government is among the factors influencing the degree to which it is Eurosceptic. They suggest that a party's rhetoric regarding the European Union tamps down if the party participates in the government, becoming a part of a coalition government or supporting a minority government. During the period examined in this thesis, the FPÖ was a part of three governing coalitions. It was also a period of significant events which enable us to analyse the FPÖ's conduct - in particular, the Austrian accession to the EC/EU, the adoption of treaties modifying the functioning of the EU, the Austrian presidencies of the Council of the EU in 1998 and 2006, the European Parliament elections and their representative's activities in the EP, the process of...

diplomové práce v anglickém jazyce: EU sanctions against Austria in 2000 in the context of the position of Austria in the European Union. Application of constructivist theory on the case The Master thesis EU sanctions against Austria in 2000 in the context of the position of Austria in the European Union. Application of constructivist theory on the case tried to analyse the Austrian case from the constructivist perspective. The thesis attempted to verify the hypothesis that the Member States of the European Union wrongly assessed the impact of Haider's FPÖ on the Austrian democratic development and the European Union itself, claiming that the participation of the FPÖ in the Austrian federal government was jeopardizing its democratic values. In fact there was no evidence for this allegation despite the nature of the FPÖ which was confirmed as being far-right in some aspects (for instance its xenophobia). It has been shown that the participation of the FPÖ in the Austrian government (rather than its isolation, which might have led to even bigger support) was in a certain way a guarantee that democracy and the common values of the European Union would be upheld. Furthermore the thesis tried to answer the question whether the inclusion of the FPÖ in the governmental coalition had posed a real danger...
