Right extremism in CZ 2007-2010

The thesis deals with the phenomenon of right-wing extremism in the Czech Republic during 2007-2010 which is viewed from the socio-constructivist perspective of the sociological concept of moral panic. The theoretical part focuses on definition of the terms right-wing extremism and moral panic with regard to their evolution and various approaches in social theory and also briefly describes the situation and significant subjects of the Czech extremist right-wing scene in the analyzed period. The analytic part presents media content of four selected aspects and cases of right-wing extremism as published in nationally released newspaper Mladá fronta DNES which is examined in depth using qualitative content analysis. The task of the analysis was to determine to what extent and by which specific ways the representation of these cases in given newspaper fulfills the aspects and processes of an ideal type of moral panic, represented by Klocke and Muschert's hybrid model of moral panics, and how the cases are put in the general framework of constructing the right-wing extremism as a prominent social problem and a moral panic.

Diploma thesis "Media covering of laying-off and unemployed in Lidove noviny during 1. half-year 1930 and in Mlada Fronta DNES during 2. half-year 2008 - Comparison of two approaches" compares reactions of forenamed newspapers to expansion of economic depression which forces employers to reduce cost of production and cost of labour force. Diploma thesis compares the influence of the rate of unemployement in various regions to their representation in medias and also compares the influence of the rate of unemployment in various sectors of economy to their representation in medias. Diploma thesis also analyses subjects of business news which concerned the problem of unemployment.
The media image of lobbying

The diploma thesis "Media Image of Lobbying" focuses on the issue of the media image of lobbying and lobbyists in the newspapers Mladá fronta Dnes and Právo in the year 2008. Lobbying is an activity which the majority of population experiences through the media only. The media may thus greatly influence the way the public perceives and evaluates lobbying. In the first part of the diploma thesis the question of the media presentation of reality are introduced and the factors which influence the form of the media content are outlined. The paper further deals briefly with the effect the media have on the population and with the agenda-setting concept. Then the definition of lobbying is given, as well as the reasons and conditions for its positive and negative reputation. Positive and negative functions of lobbying are pointed out and various types and forms of lobbying are presented including indirect lobbying, which is associated with PR activities. In the research part of the paper the results of the quantitative research are presented. The aim of this research was to discover the most frequent types of lobbying and lobbyists in the newspapers studied. The transformation of the press releases into the media texts

The diploma thesis " The transformation of the press releases into the media texts" deals with criteria according to what journalists make decisions, what press release should be included into the news and what should not. Since the present media studies perceive gatekeeping as a broader process of information control involving all aspects of message encoding, therefore not just a selection but also a compilation, a transmition, a formation and the timing of information transmition from a supplier to a recipient, the diploma thesis also pursues the transformation process of a press release into a media text itself. The diploma thesis is divided into a theoretical and a practical part. The theoretical part includes the gatekeeping process analysis, the pseudoevent problems analysis and news production routinization analysis. This chapter summarizes the knowledge to the topic from scholarly literature. The second and the principal part of the diploma thesis is the practical and application part. The diploma thesis Analysis of the political instrumentalization of the periodic press Mladá fronta DNES in the period before elections to the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic in 2013 examines, if leader of the political party ANO Andrej Babiš used his position of the owner of the media group MAFRA to influence media content in the periodic press Mlada fronta DNES during the period before elections to the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic in 2013. Theoretical framework briefly describes the basic concepts of political communication and geopolitical division of the models of political communication including the Czech media scene. Focus is primarily on the development and possible ways of instrumentalization of printed media operating in the Czech media market after 1989. Results of quantitative research showed that four other political parties gained more media attention then political party ANO which ended up second in the election. The title pages of the Mlada fronta DNES therefore was not used to increase promotion of Andrej Babis and his political party. Activities of Agrofert holding covered by Mladá fronta Dnes and Lidové noviny before and after their takeover by Andrej Babiš

Exploration of the influences that an owner can have on his own media is an important topic nowadays. This master thesis focuses on the possible owner influences on his newspaper in the example of buying of the publishing house Mafra by Agrofert's owner Andrej Babis. It covers articles concerning Agrofert in two of Mafra's dailies - Mlada fronta Dnes and Lidove noviny. The reporting period covers two years before and two years after the purchase of Mafra by the owner of Agrofert and the current Czech Minister of Finance Andrej Babis. This covers the dates 5. 6. 2011 - 24. 6. 2013 and 25. 6. 2013 - 24. 6. 2015. This thesis uses the processes of quantitative content analysis and focuses on the comparison of texts about Agrofert in these two periods. In the sample of 631 articles it examines two dozen categories, such as topic, placement on the page as well as in the daily itself or quotation of Andrej Babis, and it tracks the changes that occurred in both halves of the reporting period. The shift in content of the Mafra's media, after the change of its owner has not been largely examined yet. This means that this thesis brings a first complex insight into the topic. Figurative means and phrasemes in written publicistics

The topic of this bachelor thesis is the figurative language and the set expressions on the figurative basis set phrases in the written journalism. The work is divided into two parts. The theoretical part describes the functional styles and explains the set phrases and figurative appellation. The attention is paid especially to the functional publicistic style. The second part contains the analysis of analytic texts from the journal Mladá fronta DNES. The aim is to find out, how these means are used, what they serve for, which of them are frequented, whether they are used with understanding and how their updating happens.

The aim of this Bachelor's dissertation is to analyze and compare media image of Andrej Babiš in MF DNES and Právo. In the theoretical section is characteristic of these two czech newspapers and Andrej Babiš. In next section is method, approach and research questions. After that, the thesis contains five analyzes. Every chapter contains analyses of each newspaper, comparison and results.
Comparison business journalism of Hospodářské noviny, Lidové noviny and Mladá fronta DNES in the beginning of economic crisis in 2008

The aim of the work is to monitor how three significant Czech daily newspapers Hospodářské noviny, Lidové noviny and Mladá fronta DNES deal with the global economic crisis - the most severe economic situation of the last 80 years. It covers the period from 15 September 2008, when the American bank Lehman Brothers went bankrupt, till the end of the year 2008. The economic crisis very often became the news number one and all three journals focused on it for the whole period. The subject filled not only the economic sections of the newspapers but also pages about news from home and news of the world, sport, culture or even fashion. The work uses a statistical method to evaluate principal criteria. It helps to come to a conclusion which of the three daily newspapers was the best at covering the economic crisis in its early stage in 2008.

The diploma thesis Styles of written journalism explores news styles, analytical formations and stylishly mixed these ones. It explores verbal and ideographical devices, used in the Czech present dailies MFD, Lidové noviny and Právo. The work is based on an analysis of linguistic material, accumulated in the time between August 2010 - August 2011. The Attention is aimed at mainly lexical devices. The diploma thesis evaluates their function in the journalistic text and similarities and differences in jounarist´s work with them in various formations in journalistic style. The Interest focuses on the structure of present Czech dailies and the diploma thesis tries to capture their profile. Furthermore, it deals with the headlines, their types and functions in the text. It the introduction there is an explanation of the terminology in the the diploma thesis. Also a brief history of news service is given.
