Presidential campaign finance in the US: diminishing role of public funding
Slavíčková, Kristýna ; Kotábová, Věra (advisor) ; Švec, Radek (referee)
This bachelor thesis focuses on public financing of presidential campaigns in the United States and the fact that after decades of functioning successfully the system's use by presidential candidates diminished and virtually vanished in recent years. The aim of the thesis is to identify the particular reasons for this development and to propose suggestions for changes that would eventually make the system functional and lucrative for the candidates again. It sets forth a comprehensive description and analysis of the legislation and Supreme Court rulings concerning presidential campaign financing as well as an overview of the current state of public campaign finance law. It then examines those presidential elections in which some candidate(s) opted out of the public financing, whether for primary or general elections, and tries to find the reason behind the candidates' decisions to opt out. Based on that it determines the reasons which were a common denominator among the presidential candidates and which caused the diminishment of public financing and categorizes them. At the end it proposes possible solutions to these problems and the possibilities of reforming the public financing of presidential elections.

The role of the immigration issue in the presidential campaigns of Nicolas Sarkozy in 2007 and 2012
Poláková, Terezie ; Emler, David (advisor) ; Perottino, Michel (referee)
The purpose of my thesis is to analyse the role of the immigration issue in the presidential campaigns of Nicolas Sarkozy in 2007 and 2012. The thesis is divided into two parts. The first part illustrates the subject of this thesis in theory. It describes the development of the immigration question in France after the Second World War, and then addresses the rhetorical style of Sarkozy called "sarkozysme". The second part treats the outcomes of a Computer- assisted Text Analysis, a method described by sociologist Martin Hájek. The result of this process is a schema presenting the co-occurrence of the most frequent words in a text. In the second part, the schemas of the campaign of 2007 and 2012 are examined separately with regards to the role of the word "immigration". In the last chapter, the context and importance of "immigration" is compared. The aim of the thesis is to prove my initial hypothesis that the immigration issue had a negative connotation in the context of Sarkozy's speeches in 2007 and 2012, and that its importance had a growing tendency. The first claim was only partly proven as the immigration issue in 2007 had unexpectedly positive connotations whereas negative ones in 2012. The growth of its importance was proven and demonstrated. Keywords Sarkozy, immigration, presidential...

Vice Presidency in the U.S. Executive Branch
Dohnal, Vojtěch ; Kotábová, Věra (advisor) ; Kubátová, Hana (referee)
The thesis deals with the vice-president's office of the USA, his powers and his position in the American executive. Considering relatively limited constitutional definition of the vice-presidency, also circumstances of the historic evolution of election this function and issues of vice-president's succession to the presidential office are the subjects of my thesis. The vice-president's selection in the United States of America used to be for many reasons a very important and by the public desirously awaited decision of a presidential candidate before presidential elections. This is the reason, why the thesis deals also with the issue of the impact of the vice-president's nomination on a presidential campaign.

Chmelařová, Alžběta ; Voráček, Emil (advisor) ; Koubek, Jiří (referee)
This work aims to describe tendencies in development of Ukraine's electoral geography and characterize Ukrainian voters' behaviour during 2004-2010, with focus on presidential elections 2010. Electorate in Ukraine is regionally divided and this division proved its stability in time, which can be observed in Ukrainian elections since gaining independence. Orange revolution only deepened the division and made regionalism more evident. Presidential elections 2010, first presidential elections after Orange revolution, followed the structure of divided country between west and east and "their" candidates as well. Support of "Orange camp" is decreasing, Viktor Yanukovych, looser from 2004 and antihero came back. The paper provides the reader with explanation of these processes and factors that lead to Mr. Yanukovych's victory. Key words: electoral geography, presidential elections, Ukraine, Yulya Tymoshenko, Viktor Yanukovych, electoral behaviour, Orange revolution, regionalism
