Media Image of Brexit in the Czech Press
Volfová, Štěpánka ; Lütke Notarp, Ulrike (advisor) ; Křeček, Jan (referee)
The diploma thesis on the topic Media Image of Brexit in the Czech Press deals with how Czech journalists inform about that specific world affair, what kind of media image they create about it. The analysed period is 2016 when a referendum was held on the topic of the United Kingdom's staying in the European Union in which citizens decided to leave the EU. The material studied includes articles that were published in 2016 in the largest Czech daily newspapers and several weekly newspapers. Using a qualitative content analysis the so-called Grounded theory method a system of categories and subcategories was created that reflects the topics that journalists perceive as key topics to understand the Brexit. In the second part of the research I investigated whether the media system has a direct influence on the Czech media coverage about Brexit. To characterize the media system, I use the parameters defined in the theory of three media models D.C. Hallina and P. Mancini. The theoretical part includes the specification of the term "media image of the world", explains the term "brexit" and presents a brief history of the evolution of the United Kingdom's departure from the European Union. The theoretical part also includes the introduction of the theory of three media models written by Hallina and...
Attitudes to the UK membership in the European Union (1993-2016)
Vavrušková, Barbora ; Soukup, Jaromír (advisor) ; Plechanovová, Běla (referee)
The aim of master's thesis "Attitudes to the UK membership in the European Union (1993- 2016)" is to analyse the individual theoretical and political attitudes towards the UK membership in the European Union. In particular, the thesis focuses on the period after the adoption of the Maastricht Treaty in 1993, during the governments of Conservative Prime Minister John Major (1990-1997), Labour Prime Minister Tony Blair (1997-2005) and Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron (2010-2016), who called a referendum on "Brexit" in 2016. Since the beginning of its membership in the EU, the United Kingdom has been more inclined towards an intergovernmental approach and worried about the delegation of power to supranational authorities as well as federalist tendencies. Due to the large number of approaches and theories related to the European integration, the thesis will focus in detail on federalism theory, to which the United Kingdom has always strongly defined itself, contrary to the model of multilevel governance that characterizes the current political system in Britain. In the past, the British political system was based on the so-called Westminster model, however, since the 1980s it has gradually transformed into a model of multilevel governance. The core of the thesis is to classify the relations...

Brexit and Stock Market Comovements of UK and Europe
Bedrichová, Táňa ; Horváth, Roman (advisor) ; Komárek, Luboš (referee)
The referendum organised in United Kingdom on June 23rd , 2016 led to an unexpected decision to leave the European Union. Since Brexit announcement, uncertainty about the economic prospects of the United Kingdom and of the EU has increased, and multiple research has been conducted to estimate the economic implication of Brexit for the UK as well as for the rest of Europe. The thesis addresses this topic from the point of view of financial markets correlation, and assesses how did the Brexit announcement and the outcome of the 2016 referendum influenced the cointegration of the UK stock market with those of continental Europe. Using a multivariate DCC-GARCH model, and European stock markets data, the thesis concludes that correlation of UK and European stock markets decreased since the referendum announcement, and further decrease has been observed after the vote took place. Right of a member state to leave the EU in context of the Brexit
Petrus, Tomáš ; Scheu, Harald Christian (advisor) ; Svobodová, Magdaléna (referee)
Right of a member state to leave the EU in context of the Brexit Abstract One year has passed since the United Kingdom officially announced its intention to withdraw from the European Union membership. Brexit as this withdrawal is often called means the turning point not only for the view of the concept of the ever closer European integration, but it also presents feasibility of a new option for the EU Member States. It is astonishing that in spite of popular attention to this topic there is an absence of serious academic research dealing with the right of a Member State to withdraw in all its wide aspects. Therefore, this thesis aims at the goal of describing the problem of the withdrawal in the most complex way and not only in the light of the recent Brexit. For understanding the present situation, it seems to be necessary, at least in the limited way, to introduce the right of withdrawal as the external aspect of the sovereignty ultima ratio which even in the historical period before the explicit incorporation in the Lisbon Treaty had to exist. In a retrospective view, it is also crucial to mention cases which were in a strict sense not examples of a withdrawal of Member States, but that proved the practical accommodation of national instruments and procedures to termination of EU law application. On...

Current Issues in International Insolvency Law
Plachá, Pavla
The PhD thesis "Current Issues in International Insolvency Law" aims to describe and draw attention to the moments that, in the opinion of its author, have had the strongest impact on international insolvency law so far. As such it is chiefly devoted to the analysis of existing regulation in the area of European insolvency law (which is principally based on Council Regulation (EC) No 1346/2000 of 29 May 2000 on insolvency proceedings - the "Old Insolvency Regulation" - and Regulation (EU) 2015/848 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 20 May 2015 on insolvency proceedings - the "New Insolvency Regulation"), and also provides a selection of the relevant case law which has over time significantly changed the way in which specific issues and instruments related to this area are viewed. To do justice to the complexity of the subject matter, the thesis also discusses the determination of jurisdiction in cross-border insolvency proceedings and recognition of the effects of foreign insolvency proceedings in relations between EU and non-EU countries. The main aim of the thesis is to answer the following questions: which legal documents have had the strongest impact on the current form of international insolvency law; whether and how the interpretation of the concept of centre of a debtor's main...
British Political Parties and Immigration Theme in Their Brexit Campaigns
Tenchurina, Liliia ; Kasáková, Zuzana (advisor) ; Váška, Jan (referee)
Before, after and during the Brexit referendum in the UK immigration has been one of the most popular topics, which politicians discussed in their campaigns. Some of them were supporting the immigrants from the EU, arguing that they were bringing up the economy in the country, helping out the NHS and public services, and supporting the image of the multi- cultural society in the UK. However, others were saying that immigrants were stealing jobs, making unemployment rate higher and salaries lower. Immigration is still a very sensitive topic in the British society, ever since Brexit happened. This master thesis deals with the Discourse analysis of five main British political parties and the way they talked about immigration in their pre-Brexit speeches and campaigns. The main focus of the research is on understanding, whether immigration was indeed as important during the Brexit debate and also whether some of the UK's political parties tried to form a negative image of immigrants in British society. The analysis bases on the Political Marketing theory and is done by collecting the data out of the primary sources (such as speeches, campaigns and web-sites of the parties), and using the qualitative analysis on them.
