A Comparative Analysis of French Expressions in English

This B.A. thesis entitled "A Comparative Analysis of French Expressions in English" is concerned with the phenomenon of French expressions in Modern English and their meaning. The theoretical part focuses on the field of meaning, its types and different approaches to its description. In the following chapter, the history of foreign influences on English is briefly outlined. Subsequently, the concrete influence of French on English and its traces in the vocabulary of Modern English are discussed. The practical part consists of a comparative analysis of sixty-two French loanwords in Modern English which are perceived to be semantically different from their French counterparts. The aim of this thesis is to conduct a survey of their usage in English and in French and, consequently, to determine to what extent their meanings differ.
French Language Textbooks Used at Czech Secondary Schools in 1948 - 1989

This diploma thesis deals with French textbooks used at Czech secondary schools in the era of the years 1948-1989. The diploma thesis is composed of two parts the theoretical and the practical part. The theoretical part consists in a description of the Czech educational environment, mainly the development of the Czech education system with regard to the most significant education reforms which shaped the system. The description is centred on Gymnázium, which is a specific type of secondary school where the French language was taught. The theoretical part also deals with the question of general theory of textbooks and the chosen foreign language teaching methods. The practical part concerns the analysis of 5 chosen French textbooks intended for the first class of secondary schools. The selection was made with regard to the education reforms mentioned in the theoretical part.
Analysis of English and French True Friends (Vrais Amis) in a Corpus of Authentic Text Samples

This PhDr. dissertation provides a parole analysis of vrais amis (true counterparts) in current French and current English. To this end a specialized English-French translation corpus was assembled, composed of three subcorpora equal in length, namely Religious, Political and Fiction discourse, amounting altogether to approximately 60,000 words. With the help of the AntConc computer tool, true friends employed in the corpus were generated, here conceived of as a register-specific phenomenon exclusively. Using the frequency criteria, a "central setˮ of 64 most frequent counterparts was delineated. These central counterparts, marked by (almost) identical frequencies, identical contexts and the same registers, were subjected to a multiaspectual analysis, scrutinizing the pronunciation, spelling, word classes, share of derivation, and frequency of both, the types and the tokens. Since English proved to be the borrowing language in all instances, the research also indirectly addressed the degree of their integration in the English lexicon by reference to frequency bands. For most of the researched aspects, three zones of counterparts were identified, namely those exhibiting identity, close similarity and relative difference. Expletive "ne" in Contemporary French

This bachelor's thesis is dealing with the expletive ne in Contemporary French. The theoretical part describes the particular use of the morpheme ne (that has no influence on the designation of a sentence) listing the possible contexts in which it can be used. Two main presumptions shape the analysis. First, this phenomenon is an attribute to a higher literary style. Secondly, the expletive ne has the ability to change the meaning of a sentence. The two hypotheses are examined on the corpus material of The Czech National Corpus. In the first phase a comparison of the frequency of the expletive ne is done on four types of texts - novels, journalism, texts from the internet and the film subtitles. It follows that the type of text influences the frequency of expletive ne in the text. However, the novels did not prove to be using it systematically the most. The second phase of the empirical part analyses in details the concrete examples from the french novels both with and without the expletive ne.
Important personalities of the didactics of French as a foreign language since 1950

This work presents the chronological development of foreign languages teaching methods, with a focus on French especially. With these methods, we provide an overview of the learning materials development. The aim of this work is to introduce the didacticians of French language from the 1950s who worked on teaching methodologies. The first part briefly presents the French language extension history and, then, the traditional, direct and audio-lingual teaching language methods details that we encounter before the 1950s. The second part deals with the second half of the last century. On the background of the audiovisual structurally global approach, we encounter the main persons linked to this method. Consequently, we continue with the communication approach and the Speech acts of J. L. Austin and J. Searl, followed by Daniel Coste and his"Niveau Seuil". The last part deals with the Common European Framework of Reference, followed by 21st century most representative didacticians. Reading skills and specific learning difficulties in French as a foreign language teaching

The diploma thesis deals with the topic of teaching French to children affected by learning disorders. It aims to describe various principles and their application into practice at beginners classes. The theoretical part investigates learning disorders as a whole with their causes, manifestations, diagnose and reeducational techniques and activities that are applied in practice. The last part of the thesis is dedicated to foreign language teaching in the context of learning disorders, fundamental principles and methods of partial linguistic spheres. Further on, the practical part presents a case study of two children with learning disorders during a French class. Individual activities are introduced that are appropriate for their teaching. Finally, two applications suitable for both class at school and home preparation are designed, with their main contribution being the immediate feedback that allows children to work alone. Regarding the rather practical character of the diploma thesis, a great number of examples illustrating various learning disorders are introduced in order for the reader to understand the difficulties that affected children encounter. Approach to Phonetics in French Textbooks

This thesis deals with the changing role of phonetics in the history of teaching French as a foreign language. It provides a probe into the most significant methods of language teaching (the Grammar Translation Method, the Direct Method, the Audiolingual Method, the SGAV, Communicative Approach), including the current role of phonetics in teaching French. It also outlines a possible further development. The historical overview is then demonstrated on chosen French textbooks representing the individual methods, including a more detailed analysis of two contemporary textbooks. The analysis aims to provide information concerning the frequency of phonetic exercises, their focus, type and the use of phonetic transcription. Based on the theoretical background and the practical analysis, a list of inspiring approaches and techniques for current French teaching is made.

Position of adjectives in Spanish and French - developmental trends

The Abstract The name of the dissertation: The position of adjectives in Spanish and French - increasing tendency The keywords: adjective, Spanish, French, a position of adjectives, anteposition, postposition, increasing tendency. The dissertation named The position of adjectives in Spanish and French French - increasing tendency deals with issues of position of adjectives in French and Spanish language. The main topic of this dissertation is tendency to anteposition for these two languages. It's split to several parts which are separated by themes. At the beginning, we are focusing on adjectives in general and to its basic properties as a part of speech. After, we will get to know an adjective from semantic and syntactic aspect, which is underlying exactly for the position of adjective. In the end of the theoretical part we will also focus on increasing tendency in this area. The practical part will be about corpus and questionnaire research which is intended for native speakers. The aim of this dissertation is confirm or disprove a hypothesis of common tendency to anteposition for French and Spanish adjectives.
Corpus analysis of French compound infinitive forms

(in English): The aim of this thesis is to describe the functioning of French compound infinitive in comparison with its simple form. Using language corpora, we will cover several textual types - journalism (corpus L'Est Républicain and a part of InterCorp corpus), fiction (corpus InterCorp), but we will also utilize typologically various texts from the Internet (corpus frWac) and a corpus of film subtitles. The theoretical part will describe the infinitives forms in terms of terminology, morphology, and syntax. The empirical part will be dedicated to mapping out the contexts in which the compound infinitive occurs and also to analyzing different factors that affect its aspectual and temporal interpretation. In conclusion, there is a summary as well as possible issues for further research dealing with this topic.
