The television series Wifina in the context of media literacy and education through media

This diploma thesis is an addition to the discussion on media literacy development, which also deals with the effectiveness of children's education via a television program. The work offers a brief content overview of public broadcasting television channel ČT:D, focusing on shows that enlighten the viewers about facts from various fields (which are thus regarded educational). The television program Wifina is described in detail and is the center of later research. The first part of this document defines the factors that affect reception of information from television broadcast. The thesis introduces different variations of key media literacy concepts, including the specific way they are handled in the Czech setting. The objective of this work is to determine, whether the show Wifina enhances development of media literacy through its content, and whether this content helps to broaden general knowledge and education of the viewers. Based on content analysis of the program and subsequent qualitative comparative analysis of two groups of children - viewers and non-viewers - the author ascertains, whether Wifina educates its viewers about media-related subjects, as well as other areas. This Master thesis called Approach to university and non-university media studies in the Great Britain and Germany: A comparative study compares the approaches of Great Britain and Germany to tertiary education, which is thematically linked to the media. The thesis shows specific concepts in this field of study in two different environments that have developed under different historical circumstances and as a result of different processes of adoption of media studies as a university subject. The boundaries of this subject are not specifically stated, which provides countries with an opportunity to put their own concept into this subject. This thesis examines tertiary education connected to media institutions of higher education, within individual study programs, in leading professional publications, in the national assessment of educational documents and in approach of multinational organizations. The text defines relevant bodies and syllabi, identifying core competences of graduates of these studies, the processes through which they become experts and educational activities connected to media education. Diploma thesis "School media - press, radio, television, internet: on example of regions of Olomouc and Ústí nad Labem" deals with school media production of pupils and students of primary and secondary education focusing on the Czech environment. The whole issue is framed within media literacy, media education. Moreover, the interpretation accents with its direction of production. The most important chapters of historical-theoretical part introduce the outline of the school media development from the beginning till nowadays. Practical part characterizes school media in the regions of Olomouc and Ústí nad Labem. The research survey is mainly focused on the occurrence of school media production, forms of their outputs and characteristics of individual types of school media. What is more, the survey is also interested in current trends in publishing of school and class magazines and their theme and genre profile. Survey summarizes reasons, which impedes realization of school media production. Media literacy as a mean of development of high school student's critical evaluation of political advertisment

This thesis is focused on the impact of media literacy in terms of the ability of high school students to interpret political advertisement. In the part of this thesis the reader will be introduced into the concepts of modern democracy and mass media as its important part especially, within the context of politics, in the pre-election period. The reader will be provided an insight into the issue of the influence of mass media on citizens who are exposed to the products of political marketing. Due to the focus on high school students, this thesis mentions research domestic one as well as international that puts together terms as politics- media-teenagers. The second part of this thesis is designed as a research aimed at the impact of media literacy on the students' skills to analyze a political advertisement as well as their civic attitudes. The Role of Media in Eeveryday Life of Contemporary Early Teenagers

This bachelor thesis investigates the influence of media communication channels on students in elementary schools, mainly from the point of view how the media influence is perceived by the students themselves. In the introductory part the thesis presents key theoretical findings from selected literature related to the chosen theme and the paradigms issuing from theoretical research, mainly in the field of television broadcasting impact on the selected age category and on its capacity to notice the media impact by itself. In order to set the theme in the appropriate context the paper also introduces specialized terms, theories on the media impact and an overview of the current level of media education in families and schools. The empirical segment, which is the main part of this thesis, explains in thorough detail the preparation, execution and outcome of the research questionnaire applied on two Prague elementary schools. The questionnaire was applied on students from the 5th to the 9th grade. The quantitative research measurement, which was calibrated to confirm or infirm the research hypotheses, often confirms the previous theoretical findings and results of earlier research by quoted specialists. Title: The Use of Media in the EFL Classrooms at Secondary Schools in the 21st Century Author: Bc. Lucie Slavíková Department: Department of English Language and Literature Supervisor: PhDr. Radek Vít, Ph.D. Abstract The aim of this diploma thesis is to explore and compare various types of the old and the new media, which are commonly used in the EFL classrooms at the Czech secondary schools in the 21st century. The key question is to what extent are the new media implemented into the English lessons at the Czech grammar and secondary technical and vocational schools. The findings of the online questionnaire survey, which was conducted on the random sample of the Czech secondary school teachers of English and on the sample of the 15 or 16 years old first grade secondary school students of English proved that both the old and the new media are commonly used in the English lessons. However, despite the fact that the lives of the 21st century students are largely influenced by the new media, the English teachers use the old media more often. It is recommended that more initiatives and programmes should be directed at the promotion of the implementation of the new media into the English lessons and also at the training of the teachers in using them effectively. Children news coverage as a means of television education

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to investigate on news broadcasting of the children's TV station ČT Déčko and whether this source information is suitable for their moral, physical and mental development. The theoretical part of the thesis is devoted to the impact of television in general, or more specifically, the impact of news broadcasting (dedicated primarily to adult audience) on children. The thesis describes objectives, ideas and focus of the newly established children's TV station, with news TV show "Zprávičky", being the focal point, as a sort of media tool of education. In the practical part the thesis seeks answer to the question whether this kind of broadcasting is hitting the set target and if it follows the right path. This bachelor thesis is based on a closed cooperation with ČT Déčko TV station and after its finalization it will be at a disposal of its creative directors as a supplementary material. Diploma thesis "Media teaching at Czech schools: attitudes of school leaders to develop of media literacy" process the analysis of the current situation in the education of pupils in primary and secondary schools in the new issue of media literacy, figuring how it happens, what are the practices of school leaders - that determines how and where this discipline in schools is loaded, what leaders of schools achieve results and how they evaluated the contribution of the subject. The main target of this work is to analyze the current situation in Prague and neighbourhood and find the starting points for all who are interested in the topic, as well as defining the attitudes of school leaders to load new topics into school curricula. Media literacy and media education as a theme of classified research

This thesis aims to explore important research projects conducted in the field of media education and media literacy during approximately the first decade of 21st century in Europe. It deals with research studies covering three areas: research as a tool of consensus, research of media education at schools and research about children and young people and their access to new technologies. The thesis looks into initiatives and legislative measures by the European Union in the area of media literacy development, informs about progress in the field of research projects dealing with media education and presents also the EU Kids Online project. Further it compares 2 research studies conducted in Great Britain in 2010 and introduces the British regulator OFCOM and its research production on the subject of media literacy of children and adults. Based on the presented findings a research study for Czech Republic is proposed on the topic of parental mediation in the internet environment.
