The Formation of coalitions against the Islamic State
Pinkas, Šimon ; Kofroň, Jan (advisor) ; Střítecký, Vít (referee)
In this bachelor thesis, I will be exploring the process of formation of coalitions in the context of war against Islamic State in the region of Near and Middle East. Through this analysis, I will try to test the Balance of Threat theory, conceived by Stephen Walt, whose main assumption is a severe influence of the aspect of threat on the state's coalition policy. Coalitions are important phenomena on the international scene, often being crucial for the next political development, researching them is both instructive and beneficial. In this thesis, I will firstly summarize the assumptions of the theory concerning the formation of coalitions and follow up with the analysis of all state-actors participating in my research, according to the qualities needed for successful test of the theory. Then I will explore the coalition making process that led to formation of the main coalitions against ISIS. Finally, according to the data from this analysis, I will decide whether the Balance of Threat theory is or is not valid.
Pictorial Possible Worlds
Špelda, Petr ; Střítecký, Vít (advisor) ; Raida, Zbyněk (referee) ; Conway, Maura (referee)
The present text develops a model designed to generate conceptual theories with respect to the pictorial (visual) form of representation. This is achieved by combining a computational approach to cognition with philosophical devices of the analytic tradition. The model itself, simulating the structure of reality, consists of (i) a metaphysical stage based on Armstrong's theory of combinatorial possibility, (ii) an epistemological stage proposing emergent phenomena founded upon the notion of computational irreducibility, and (iii) a semantic stage proposing a stochastic account of concepts anchored in the intensional/extensional apprehension of meaning. Towards the end, the model is applied to develop a conceptual account of a case of social, political, and economic organization of human communities as depicted in the visual propaganda of the so-called Islamic State.

Fialová, Tereza ; Lehmannová, Zuzana (advisor) ; Žáková, Gabriela (referee)
The diploma thesis Global Terrorism and New Media: The Case Study of the Islamic State examines the use of modern means of communication and technologies by global terrorists on the case of the terrorist organization Islamic State. The main hypothesis of this study is the claim that the Islamic State is using a very sophisticated communication strategy that, in combination with new technologies, allows its global scope. Through its propaganda methods, it tries not only to manipulate the audience and attract potential followers, but also demoralize and intimidate its enemies. The combination of two qualitative research methods, the case study and thematic analysis, enabled a more detailed examination of the Islamic State communication strategy and its propaganda messages in a selected data sample.
The role of Turkish Kurds in the fight against ISIL
Růžičková, Kristýna ; Eichler, Jan (advisor) ; Dubský, Zbyněk (referee)
The Kurds are considered to be the largest nation without their own state. In Turkey, the Kurdistan Worker's Party (PKK), considered to be a terrorist organization, has been struggling for Kurdish self-determination for over 30 years. However, the PKK changed its demands and mainly its tactics - it has begun to attempt a political solution to the Kurdish issue. With the onset of a global threat in the form of the so-called Islamic State (ISIL), the PKK began to engage in the fight against it. Its role in this struggle is the main theme of the thesis. The aim of this work is to analyze the role of the PKK in the fight against ISIL on the basis of the characteristics of terrorism, the development of the Kurdish question in Turkey, and the threat posed by ISIL. The thesis concludes that the PKK has a very significant role in this fight, not only because of its experience in fighting the Turkish government. Thanks to its contribution, the PKK also aspires to be removed from the US and European list of terrorist organizations.
