Media Imagine of Transformation of Elite after 1989: Moral Havel and Technocrat Klaus

Czechoslovak society underwent a fundamental change in 1989, in which a certain portion of society, previously restricted from official intervention in politics, took crucial part. Even though this part of society (the dissent) was before 1989 restricted from participation in politics, it had been doing so. However, in illegal ways at that time, for which had been the involved often persecuted. This group of dissidents later contributed to the revolutionary changes, which is the source of certain mythology that began to appear in connection with them. During 1990s their influence decreased, and the dissent's political elite was gradually replaced by a new right- wing elite, promising economic reform and rapid transformation. The idealistic conception of politics was replaced by the pragmatic one and completely different and ambitious personalities came to the foreground. The new characters did not come from the background of fight against totalitarianism, yet they quickly gained political skills. This transformation of elites in Czech society can be expressed via comparison of Václav Havel and Václav Klaus, as both of them were among the main initiators of domestic politics. Reflection of the Czechoslovak Normalization Society in the Dramatic Works of Václav Havel

The bachelor thesis "Reflection of the Czechoslovak Normalization Society in the Dramatic Works of Václav Havel" is concerned with Václav Havel's dramatic work in the period 1963- 1989 and especially about the reflection of the contemporaneous Czechoslovak society in selected Havel's plays. It focuses mainly on the analysis of the selected plays and on their reflection by foreign media. The introduction introduces the reader to general issues and defines the topic. The first chapter of the thesis focuses on the general concepts but also explores e.g. the Czech theatre scene during the normalization period. The second chapter analyses selected dramatic works of Václav Havel. The third chapter is devoted to the media response of Havel's plays abroad. The fourth and last chapter of the thesis is the conclusion, which summarizes and evaluates results of the whole work.
Resisting Temptation:Mephistophelian seduction in Czech Theatrical Drama of the 1970's and 1980's

This master thesis deals with the topic of temptation in three Czech Theatrical Dramas of the 1970's and 1980's, inspired by the legend of Faust. These dramatic works represent different model approaches of dealing with such a topic. Thesis focuses on the principle of evil and its functioning. The temptation by Devil is therefore defined as Mephistophelian seduction, which occurs in drama plays selected as a subject of this thesis. The thesis analyzes and describes Mephistophelian seduction and its realization in theatrical dramas. Thesis elaborates the mechanism of evil principle and examines how the main protagonists are influenced in their acting and behaviour by this power. This thesis brings the power of evil into the wider context of "higher power" and describes relations between the power of evil and totalitarian power. On this base the historical and political context of the lives of the authors is considered as an important element. Based on comparison of all these aspects the principle of Mephistophelian seduction is reflected within its existential dimension. The subject of this thesis is the analysis, evaluation, and comparison of the media image of Václav Havel as a president in the context of selected events in the newspapers Rudé Právo / Právo and Lidové noviny. The theoretical part includes the biography of Václav Havel divided into three main time intervals and their subchapters. The purpose of the CV is to understand the content and context of analyzed newspaper articles in the following part of the work. The practical part includes a description of the characteristics of analyzed journals and media research methodology. The main part of the analysis is the interpretation of the results of qualitative research analyzing journalistic articles from selected periods about Václav Havel using the Grounded theory. The aim of this thesis was to find out how the media reported about Václav Havel in the context of their original political differentiation. That was achieved through research questions and answers.
Havel's legacy at Ostrovní 13 (literary reportage)

This thesis presents the Václav Havel Library and the legacy of the person whose name it holds in the form of the literary reportage. In the theoretical part it defines the literary reportage genre. Firstly it describes the historical development of the reportage, focusing on the Czech and Polish journalistic and literary enviroment. Then, in contrast with the Czech tradition, it defines the specific genre that is the Polish literary reportage, focusing in more detail on the types of narrators and the language it uses. In the practical part the theoretical knowledge is being implemented in the form of an original literary reportage, which presents the environment and the functioning of the Václav Havel Library. It presents an unique institution that was modeled on the American presidential libraries for the purpose of archiving and publishing the works of Václav Havel and related materials, as well as organising cultural events that carry his spirit. The literary reportage Havel's legacy at Ostrovní 13 gives an interpretation of what the legacy represents, meaning in what areas we can still feel the influence of Václav Havel and what makes him an inspiration to many. Holocaust in Political Discourse of Post-Communist Countries: Speeches of the Presidents of the Czech Republic and Poland

This thesis deals with the issue of memory and remembering in the post-communist area. In particular, it examines the form, extent and success of the Holocaust reflection and coping with the past on the example of the speeches of Czech and Polish presidents from 1993 (Václav Havel), or 1995 (Aleksander Kwaśniewski) until the access to the European Union in 2004. Author of the thesis assumes that the fall of Communism and the restoration of the democratic establishment represented a significant impetus for the countries in question to deal with their past. At the same time, they try to prove that the Holocaust memory politics of key political representatives of the Czech Republic and Poland has been one of the important factors in the creation of their post-communist democratic identity - and not only with respect to an unofficial demand of the unifying Europe to cope with the heritage of the past. Through the analysis of selected presidential speeches, the thesis identifies and evaluates the image of Holocaust created by the Czech and Polish presidents on the one hand and the weaknesses in the Holocaust memory politics of both actors on the other. This thesis deals with the influence of totalitarian and democratic regime at the communication abilities and possibilities of then presidents in our country. The theoretical part distinguishes between political and apolitical communication. Besides other things, it focuses on the characteristics of totalitarianism and democracy and describes the dispositions of language system at both regimes. It also includes a brief history of New Year's speeches and their language particularities because the theoretical part is focused exactly on those communication opportunities. The practical part focuses on the analysis of New Year's speeches of the last totalitarian and the first democratic presidents, with only that exact speech being analysed in detail in both cases. The life stories of both personages are also taken into consideration. Speeches are analysed from the content, linguistic and psychological viewpoint, emphasis being on the meaning of the entire communication. In the conclusion it is attempted to introduce the comparison of both speakers and their communication abilities. The sources of thoughts of the Czechoslovak foreign policy after 1989

The bachelor thesis explores the sources of thoughts of the Czechoslovak foreign policy after 1989. The first aim of the thesis is to formulate general principles that laid foundations for the foreign policy planning. This is achieved by analysing the ideas of the three principal foreign policy representatives in the years from 1989 to 1992: president Václav Havel, minister of foreing affairs Jiří Dienstbier and prime minister Marián Čalfa. The second aim of the thesis is based on the analysis of the goals of the foreign policy after 1989 that captures the implementation of the respresentatives' sources of thoughts into the foreign policy planning and potential deflections from the original thoughts. In conclusion, majority of the principles formulated on the basis of a synthesis of the representatives' sources of thoughts influenced the foreign policy planning. Some deflections concerning the security cooperation in Europe were noticed.
The Role and Importance of Václav Havel in International Relations

The main theme of the bachelor thesis is to find out how Václav Havel influenced the international environment and foreign policy. Václav Havel was a relatively untraditional politician, which is proved by his distinctive approach to implementation of policy. The thesis has three chapters. The first chapter provides outline of the state of international relations during the Cold War and shortly after its end. The second chapter presents the development of political situation in Czechoslovakia after revolution in 1989. The third chapter presents an overwiev of Havel´s opinions and activities from the dissident period to his death, which affect international relations.

This bachelor thesis focuses on comparison of the security policy of the first two Czech presidents. It examines the views of Václav Havel and Václav Klaus on wars after 1990, specifically Desert Storm, Allied Force, Enduring Freedom, and Iraqi Freedom. It also deals with the views of both presidents on NATO enlargement. The result of a comparison of speeches, interviews and books by Václav Havel and Václav Klaus is the answer to the questions on which topics they agree and disagree.
