The role of oil in the development of Libya
Elghawi, Elshames
The major aim of the study was to determine the role of oil in the development in Libya. In an attempt to achieve the aim of the study, both descriptive and quantitative statistics were used. The role of oil on the development of Libya has brought not only benefits, but also challenges to the socioeconomic development in the country. Also, Libyan economy is vulnerable to the global oil shocks as the economy is highly concentrated in the oil sector. Oil is a major source of government revenues, a major source of budget financing, and employment generation in the country. The study also shows that the oil development in Libya has dramatically changed the Libya since it has been discovered, and brought challenges to the traditional economic, culture and has affected the government expenditures and the daily living conditions. Although crude oil production has boosted the oil sector, the local society of the Libyan people have mainly suffered because of the negative impacts and the political instability in the country has brought adverse effects on socioeconomic development in the country. Political stability is a precondition for socioeconomic development. There is an urgent need for the government to support the private sectors, and diversify her economy beyond oil sector. For the living conditions and economy to experience rapid and sustained growth, the government should empower and strengthen all sectors, and provide better services in the country. The government should involve communities in the development process, and develop oil producing communities by providing basic infrastructure such as roads and electricity and hospitals and schools and security of oilfields and refineries.
Analysis of the Oil-Rich Countries: Case Study of Russia and Azerbaijan
Tomanec, Jan ; Mlejnek, Josef (advisor) ; Romancov, Michael (referee)
The subject of this diploma thesis is the analysis of oil-rich countries based on the case study of the Russian federation and the republic of Azerbaijan. This analysis will be based on the Resource curse theory which is fundamental for the conceptual framework of this diploma thesis. This theory describes the resource-rich states as more prone to be governed by an authoritarian regime. This relationship will be defined in the case study of Azerbaijan and Russia by comparative analysis of selected factors and state budget revenues from oil and gas. In the first chapter, the methodology and critical source analysis will be exercised together with the theoretical framework. In the second and third chapters, this paper will focus on the analysis of Azerbaijan and Russia based on factors of repression, war, corruption, and freedom of the press which is the core of this work-study. This diploma thesis is based on the presumption of superabundance on one source-focused export, mainly fossil fuels. Based on this relationship the hypothesis will be tested, which will subsequently confirm or refuse the theory of the resource curse. At the same time, the collected data will be compared with selected European countries and the United States of America which will add the required value to the research. The...
Knowledge comparison of laymen and experts about selected oil accidents
NOVÁK, Michal
Oil spills are an unfortunate part of industrial development so an active prevention is demanded. When such an event occurs, adequate measures need to be taken. The goal of the diploma thesis is to analyze law regulations, documents and information about preselected oil accidents around the world and in the Czech Republic. This thesis also evaluates the knowledge of experts and lay public in the field of oil accidents, while using preselected methods of descriptive and mathematical statistics. Following hypothesis H was chosen to achieve the adequate results of the diploma thesis: "The answers of groups of laymen and experts differ in the case of all questionnaire questions." Theoretical part of this thesis outlines the issue of oil, including general knowledge about its origin, chemical characteristics, oil extraction, processing and areas such as world oil consumption and oil logistics. Storage of oil is also a chapter contained in the theoretical part of this thesis, before it started to focus on the very core of research, oil accidents. These types of accidents were processed by using specialized documents, thanks to which relevant knowledge about individual types of oil accidents were ascertained. The research part was based on the evaluation of answers, which were collected, by using a questionnaire survey. Based on the results of the evaluated knowledge of laymen and experts in the field of oil accidents, the selected hypothesis was getting solved. A total of 105 people took part in the quantitative data collection. For lucidity, the final results are graphically portrayed. Based on the results, which were interpreted in the practical part of this thesis, hypothesis H was rejected. Based on descriptive statistics, the tables for the number of correct answers from lay people and from experts show a proximity to the normal distribution for lay people and a proximity to the Poisson distribution for experts. The diploma thesis brings theoretical and practical knowledge and the possibility to take advantage of the results, not only throughout the academic sphere. This topic also has the potential for follow-up work creation.
Problematika rozvoje elektricky poháněných vozidel kategorie M1 v České republice
KLÍMA, Denis
In the order of the last few decades with internal combustion engines dominating the passenger transport sector, the electric car now appears to be on the verge of a rapid rise in both developed and emerging automotive markets. The broad application of the electric vehicle could bring about significant changes for society, not only in terms of the technologies we use for passenger transport, but also move our economy away from oil and attempt an environmental footprint in the transport industry by reducing emissions. This work is mainly concerned with electric mobility, its development, but also its issue of development in the Czech Republic, as well as charging infrastructure and its near future for electric mobility. The potential for an electric vehicle will be limited without paying sufficient attention to standards, not only in terms of the speed of its adoption and the fluency of this transition, but also in terms of maintaining compatibility between professional powers, public safety and helping to ensure eco-bikes.
Influence of stock market variables on correlations among S&P sectors
Coufal, Matěj ; Čech, František (advisor) ; Baruník, Jozef (referee)
This thesis investigates the influence of the exogenous variables (S&P 500 Index, 10-year US Treasury Note, crude oil, and CBOE Volatility Index (VIX)) on the dynamics of correlations among S&P sectors. We concentrate on daily and weekly investment horizons, and employ the bivariate Dynamic Conditional Correlation (DCC) model. Changes in correlations implied by the DCC model are further modelled using the exogenous variables. The results indicate that VIX has the best ability to predict future changes in correlations. An increase in VIX on day (week) t is expected to cause a rise in correlations on day (week) t + 1. Next, correlations of the Energy sector tend to increase in weeks when crude oil prices are falling. Further, correlations of the Information Technology sector are likely to increase on days of rising yield on the 10-year US Treasury Note. Although we detect a certain power to predict future changes in correlations, very little of these changes is actually explained. 1
Oil accidents anf theis effect on water quality.
Lebdušková, Helena ; Benešová, Libuše (advisor) ; Tonika, Jaroslav (referee)
The basic aim of the thesis is descritpion of oil accidents, which are these days the normal part of our lives. I deal with the issue of oil extraction as a base material for petrol, oil and other oil-based products. The current methods of production make these accidents impossible to avoid. The biggest problems come from using large tankers to transport the oil, other problems bring oil processing and waste production. This thesis focuses on the assessment of oil accidents and their effects on water quality, as well as on the whole ecosystem. Keywords Oil, oil accident, water pollution
Problems of Russian-Chinese cooperation in energy sphere 2000-2010. The issue of oil and natural gas
Imrich, Jakub ; Pečenka, Marek (advisor) ; Litera, Bohuslav (referee)
Thesis Problems of Russian-Chinese cooperation in energy sphere 2000-2010: The issue of oil and natural gas is a work which is discussing main problems of cooperation between biggest producer and biggest consumer of energy in the world. My aim is to analyze these problems and answer the question, why is the mutual energy relationship not developing as we could logically assume. One of the objectives will not be analyzing mutual political disputes between these two countries. Firs part of the work offers brief excursion into the relationship in the past which was not very friendly. Second chapter is about different meaning of energy for Russian Federation and People's Republic of China and contains facts about bilateral trade considering oil and natural gas. Third chapter is most comprehensive and is pivotal for thesis and it analyzes problems of cooperation. This part of work examines inner problems of Russia, inner problems if China and main external factors which affect the energetic convergence of these two countries as well. Conclusions from the analyzed problems are then summarized in the last chapter. In this part there are also given some future prospects how the oil and natural gas trade between Russia and China might evolve in the future. In conclusion part there are briefly summarized...
The Influence of Natural Resource Dependency on US Foreign Policy. Case Study: the Persian Gulf War
Ducháč, Tomáš ; Žídková, Markéta (advisor) ; Binhack, Petr (referee)
The goal of this work is to analyze what role the dependence on natural resources played in US foreign policy in the Persian Gulf War. Natural resources and especially oil were inseparable component of the US economic development from the second part of the 20th century. Regardless of the continuous effort of government administration the US was not able reduce its dependency on import of foreign resources. The reliance on world market and the effort to control its dependency through the control of natural resources located beyond the US boarders led to the projection of these issues to the US foreign policy. The first chapter of the work is theoretical and deals with the views of particular authors on the determinants of US foreign policy in regard to natural resources. The situation of the US was characterized by hegemonic position, which enabled the US to pursue its interest on a global scale. The second chapter analyses the development of US natural resource dependency in respect to the US economy from the beginning of the 20th century to the Persian Gulf War. The chapter identifies the most important natural resources and the strategic significance of the Persian Gulf. The final chapter evaluates the role natural resources had on America's decision to enter the war.
China's energy security and policy towards Africa
Harmašová, Natálie ; Kučerová, Irah (advisor) ; Karmazin, Aleš (referee)
The goal of the thesis was to shed light on the ways in which the People's Republic of China secures its energy security and identify the role of Chinese investments in Africa. The economic development results in increased demand for energy resources. In 1993 China became a net oil importer. Conceptualization of energy security in China consists in strengthening relations with oil-rich countries. In certain areas such as industry, transportation and military oil represents for now to that extent of use an irreplaceable source of energy. Therefore I will focus on activities of the People's Republic of China. More specifically, I will focus on investment activities of China in Sudan/South Sudan and Libya. Compared to the West, China seems to be a convenient business partner as it abides by the noninterference into another state's affairs rule. The rationale behind this principle is that every state has a right to choose its model of governance development while taking into consideration its unique conditions. Additionally, China puts emphasis on mutual benefits of South-South cooperation and does not condition investments with the request for changes in political system and banking sector of a recipient state. China chooses its partner countries based on political and stability and state of security...
