The National Theatre in Prague during the Nazi Occupation: The Foremost Theatre Scene between Oppression and Resistance. (A Historical-sociological Analysis) ABSTRACT The submitted dissertation, based on historical-sociological analysis, describes and explains the status, reaction and functionality of the National Theatre in Prague during the hardest times of our modern history - the occupation of the Czech lands by Nazi Germany, the so-called Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia (1939-1945), the era when the National Theatre, as the top cultural institution, consolidated its artistry, its permanent values and interpretation efforts of its ensemble to defend the right of our society to preserve its own culture, its own existence. The principal objective of this work is to analyze methods and techniques by means of which the National Theatre in Prague, in line with its audience, steadily faced critical situations caused by the Nazi occupation. Among key factors in this process were the acts of Czech theatre performers proving their bravery as they put their work careers and even their own lives at risk to help guide our nation towards awareness and determination not to relinquish the nation's sovereignty. Culture policy of Prague 7: how to create a modern neighbourhood

The submitted thesis analyses cultural politics of Prague 7 municipal district, based on a pilot strategical project of culture planning Art District 7 starting in 2016. The study conducts Charles Landry's concept of Creative Cities and its application in the Czech cities; critically evolve Richard Florida's theory about Creative Classes; and understanding of authenticity by Sharon Zukin. The research methodology uncovers, by comparative analysis, implementation of the project Art District 7 in reality and differences of cultural practices of municipality and the actors themselves. Each chapter of the analytical part is a category of critical viewpoint to cultural politics at Prague 7 district. Transformation of cultural actor's politics (a theater, a hall, a cafe) within 2 years long research at Dolní Holešovice is clearly characterized in individual parts named Community, Space and ART. The chapter Community follows gradual change of cultural actor's relationships towards local inhabitants of the Dolní Holešovice district and presents actor's understanding of themselves as a distinct community. Fundraising, sponsorship and donorship in British cultural institutions (in comparison with the Czech Republic)

This work deals with fundraising and its comparison between selected British and Czech cultural institutions. The first part is dedicated to defining the concept of fundraising, its principles and segmentation. Subsequently the work contains a description of donorship and its reflection in the tax system in the Czech Republic and the United Kingdom. In conjunction with state financing, the issue of tax assignations in culture is analysed. In the second part of this work, different financing and approaches to donations and donorship are described and compared to selected institutions (Royal Opera House, London Symphony Orchestra, Czech National Theatre, Czech Philharmonic).

Directing and control of regional media in Czechoslovakia in the 70s and 80s of the 20th century based on the example of media reflection of culture events in Pardubice district

This dissertation thesis addresses the history of public relations of the Communist Party in Czechoslovakia in Pardubice district. It is focussed at the period of so-called normalization. Firstly, it discusses the historical context of the time for understanding the crisis of the system in 70s and 80s. The first chapters describe so-called Prague spring and military invasion in August 1968. Next chapters stress changes in politics and media after the election of Gustáv Husák to become First Secretary of the Communist Party in April, 1969. The second part of text is case study about Pardubice district. The main topic of dissertation thesis are newspaper of Pardubice district - Zář. But there are also chapters about radio, factory newspaper, regional Union of Czech Journalists or College in Pardubice and editors of student magazine. In the second part of case study attention is focussed on cultural section of newspaper Zář and its main topics - for example political anniversaries and the role of culture. In cultural section I analyze which information and how they were, or were not presented to public. Supervision and control over the media content was one of the main regime's tools to take over the culture area and its presentation.

PERFORMING ARTS (MUSIC, THEATRE, DANCE) AND CULTURAL POLICY IN CENTRAL EUROPE

The doctoral thesis The Performing Arts (Music, Theatre, Dance) and Cultural Policy in Central Europe focuses on the relationship of the state administration and performing arts in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, Austria and Germany. It includes an overview of basic strategic documents of the state cultural policy in the Central European countries, on incorporation of the term of performing arts into the concept of cultural and creative industries and the economic classification as well as analysis of statistical evidence of theatre, music and dance in the selected countries. Furthermore, the thesis focuses on the field of culture from the point of view of the state administration, on the structure of state administration responsible for the management of culture as a whole and on state institutions established by state authorities responsible for performing arts. The analysis of subsidy tools for support of performing arts is also included.

Renato Guttuso and Czechoslovakia

Práce se zabývá postavou malíře Renata Guttusa z pohledu Československa v letech 1949 - 1979, tj. v období, kdy se v Praze konaly jeho výstavy. Zkoumá, jak bylo u nás jeho dílo přijato, jaké byly motivace vzájemných sympatií a spolupráce a způsob, jakým tato spolupráce probíhala. Sleduje jeho pozici jakožto neorealistického malíře a aktivního člena Italské komunistické strany. Tato strana získala v poválečném období v Itálii velkou podporu veřejnosti. Byla do značné míry nezávislou na oficiální politice Komunistické strany Sovětského svazu a v mnohém se proto její názory od ní odchylovaly. Itálie byla zároveň zemí západně orientovanou a nacházela se v poválečném období v zájmové sféře Spojených států jakožto příjemce pomoci Marshallova plánu a od roku 1949 členský stát NATO. V širších souvislostech se proto práce zabývá dobovou kulturní a politickou situací v Itálii a v Československu a přináší vhled do vzájemných kulturních vztahů obou zemí. Autorka vycházela z dobové literatury, archivních pramenů (archiv Ministerstva zahraničních věcí, archiv Národní Galerie) a dobového tisku (zejména časopisy Výtvarné umění, Výtvarná práce, deník Rudé právo, měsíčník Literární noviny).

From Scribe to Ministerial Counsellor: The Involvement of Jiří Mařánek in the Cinematography of the Forties and Fifties

1 Abstract The thesis focuses on the involvement of Jiří Mařánek in the management of the Film Department of the Ministry of Information during the years 1945 - 1948. His ministe- rial engagement is related to the contemporary strengthening of the importance of literary preparation of the film and to the associated state dramaturgical supervision. Jiří Mařánek belongs to the circle of writers connected on one hand through their affiliation with the interwar avant-garde movements, on the other hand by their postwar involve- ment in the power apparatus that ended by the political and economic changes in the late forties and fifties. His professional fate speaks about the changes of cultural policy of the state, about the institutional development of the cinema and about the relations between literary and cinematic arts. It is a testimonial of what a successful professional career meant for a man of letters and what relationship it had to the cinema. We follow therefore a relatively brief but breakthrough episode of a writer and retired officer in the position of the Ministerial Counsellor, and we try to place its course and causes into a complex network of historical and social contexts and personal motivation. Vaclav Dobias (1909-1978), between music and politics

The presented thesis deals with the topic of Czechoslovak cultural politics in music during the Socialist Realist era. The author based the study on the personal history of Václav Dobiáš, a prominent composer, cultural organiser and a pedago- gue, who serves as a typical representation of an artist, who bestowed all his artistic talents to the cause of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia. The first chapter briefly describes Socialist Realism as a movement in music in the Soviet Union, the place of its origin. The main emphasis is put on the introduction to Zhdanov's po- litical speech, which consequently became the mandatory norm in the countries of the Eastern bloc. The next chapter is focused on Czechoslovak reflexion of Socialist Realism and its reception. This chronological development aims to expose the spe- cifics of each periods' reception of this artistic movement. Following chapters are dedicated to Václav Dobiáš. The first chapter of this part of the thesis deals with the beginning of the artist's journey which was strongly influenced by the avantgarde movement of 1930's.
