Litomyšl of Albert from Šternberk

The medieval study Litomyšl of Albert from Šternberk is a fusion of two historiographical methods. Regionally-historical and biographical. These methods lead to the unusual view of this issue, which had already been established in literature. This paper focuses mainly on the history of bishopric in Litomyšl and its center (town and domain). The author tries to look at this topic through Albert from Šternberk, who was an important imperial prelate-diplomat and also a bishop of Litomyšl during years 1364-1368 and 1371-1380. In order to maintain a complexity of this topic, it is essential to focus on both Alberts live and genesis of young Litomyšl diocese. For this reason the first part of the study is an analysis of emergence and formation of bishopric in Litomyšl, which is followed by a comprehensive study of Albert's political live. Than, the author gets to the very issue of the relationship between the monitored prelate and his Litomyšl dioceses and he tries to look at this relationship from several different perspectives. The reason for using this approach is an effort to speak out against the persistent view, that Litomyšl bishops in the era of Karl IV. A traveller during the Přemyslid dynasty

The thesis "A Traveller During the Přemyslid Dynasty" addresses the phenomenon of travel in the Middle Ages. A precise time frame is implied in the title with attention paid to the Přemyslid period and the narrative sources that describe it. The testimony provided by chronicles and legends is supplemented with knowledge from academic literature. The aim of this thesis is to present a comprehensive picture of life on the road and to address every circumstance that a traveller could encounter along his journeys. Starting with a description of the medieval landscape, which sets the basic conditions for any form of travel during this period. The thesis also focuses on the main reasons for travelling and the concept of travel in the medieval imagination, which then leads into the necessary preparations that had to be made before the beginning of each journey and the obstacles that had to be overcome along the way (most problems were faced when crossing a river or other bodies of water). Other chapters are dedicated to old roads and their legal status, orientation and to various forms of accommodation during longer journeys. St Vitus' Cathedral in Prague: Liturgy, Symbolism and Architectural Imitation in Medieval Bohemia In this thesis, the focus is put on the Wenceslas Chapel in St Vitus' Cathedral, the unusual design of which seems to have two levels of meanings: On the one hand, it was probably designed as a recreation of an earlier rotunda that had been founded by St Wenceslas. On the other hand, it seems that the intention was made the chapel and the whole cathedral would resemble the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, where the Calvary Chapel occupied the same position as the Wenceslas Chapel. This was most likely inspired by presence of the Imperial insignia containing the valuable Passion relics that Charles had acquired in 1350 and placed in the basilica, probably near the Wenceslas Chapel. Perhaps from that reason Charles had the new Gothic chapel decorated with semi-precious stones, because its red spots were associated with the blood of Christ and the Passion. The Wenceslas Chapel together with two Passion chapels at Karlstein Castle, containing Charles IV's private passion treasure, gave rise to the "Passion" architecture of the Luxembourg period. Woman and The Witches' Sabbath

This bachelor thesis follows the development of the myth of Sabbath as it was created by Christian demonologists in the last centuries of the Middle Ages. It tries to trace its mythical roots and influences of older pre-Christian traditions. It begins with medieval theories of conspiracy which caused the persecution of lepers in France at the beginning of the 14th century and ends with great European hunters, whose justification was based on the belief in the mysterious witches gathering. I assume from the thesis of the Italian historian Carlo Ginzburg, who considered the Witches Sabbath to be transformed idea of the conspiracy of lepers, on which were grafted demonized pagan motives and the new conception of the devil, which crystallized at the end of the Middle Ages. I also try to interpret the motives of the Sabbath as the projections of the social taboos, which had in the centre figure of woman. From this perspective, I evaluate the figure of the devil, who became the shadow of the society at that time.

Sermons of Jindřich from Vildštejn in Litomyšl

This thesis Sermons of Jindřich from Vildštejn in Litomyšl deals with the preaching work of the cleric Jindřich of Vildštejn, which is preserved in the manuscript of the Bavarian State Library in Munich (BSB, Clm 14256). In order to describe and evaluate this handwritten collection, the author chooses only a small probe (three of the total of thirteen preachers), in which in various ways he shows the form, context and socio-communicative purpose of the late medieval sermon. These three sermons were held in Litomyšl (1376 and 1378). Two of them are Eucharistic sermons and one is funeral speech on the occasion of the funeral of Charles IV. At the beginning of the whole work, the reader is introduced with the life of the historical personality of Jindřich of Vildštejn who was a member of the Minority Order and who held several episcopal offices throughout his life. In the second part, the author presents a description and classification of selected preaching texts. The third part of the thesis is an interpretative study in which the author tries to elucidate the contemporary communication significance of one important phenomenon of medieval preaching manuscripts such as the abundant use of quotes from the Bible and the authorities. The main subject of the bachelor thesis is the aktivity of bandit and footpad groups. The thesis is structured as a study of a specific era the first half of 15th century in Moravia. The study is carried out by analyzing the lifestyles of their dividual members and thein connections to thein leaders. The thesis describes the typology of criminal behavior based on the number of cases mentioned in the sources and researches the relations between the bandit groups and higher nobility. The author is analyzing the structure of the sources and several approache show to work with those sources. She is trying to describe the issues as a komplex social, political and legal problem of that time.
