Western Foreigners Living in Czechoslovakia during the Normalization Era
Mašková, Tereza ; Houda, Přemysl (advisor) ; Krátká, Lenka (referee)
This thesis based on an archive research as well as interviews with eleven interviewees describes aspects of every day routine in the lives of western foreigners in Czechoslovakia during the nineteen-seventies and eighties. Testimonies of the interviewees are set in context where a special emphasis is placed on legislation and internal regulations mostly of bodies of the Ministry of Interior concerning Czechoslovak visa policy, the status of foreigner in relation to Czechoslovakian citizens (marriages) and the police apparatus (observing, tailing and monitoring). Based on the testimonies and the archive material it can be concluded that the Czechoslovakian regime did not see the western foreigners as a priori ideological enemies and tolerated their presence in Czechoslovakia. Bureaucratic procedures, however, were set in such a fashion that the foreigners could be closely observed. A fear of not having their stay extended, resp. being expelled, often led those interviewees who wanted to live in Czechoslovakia permanently to subconsciously avoid conflicts with the regime. All interviewees are critical of the former regime and are able to accurately characterize its nature and its main negative aspects, but at the same time they perceived positively certain aspects of life in the brought-into-line...
Integration Courses: Last Stage of Swedish Efforts to Incorporate Immigrants
Pokorný, Ondřej ; Rovná, Lenka (advisor) ; Hořejšová, Tereza (referee)
The diploma thesis Integration Courses: Last Stage of Swedish Efforts to Incorporate Immigrants analyzes integration arrangements in the context of the evolution of Swedish integration policies. Through theoretical models of incorporation the author argues that use of these courses is a consequence of various factors with a lack of immigrants' incorporation and increasing welfare state activation as the most significant. The process of welfare state activation does not focus exclusively on the immigrants, nevertheless, in the policy area of immigrant integration some of the activation features are most visible. The modern state delegates much more duties on individuals who can not rely on its protecting hands as they were used to earlier. As the state requires more from all its citizens, immigrants are expected to strive for their integration more pro-actively. The participation in the integration courses belongs to one of the duties the immigrants must accept. The Swedish approach is, however, a bit specific, since the courses' participation is not mandatory for all immigrants but a targeted group of newcomers. Moreover, the courses differ considerably from the general tendency in Western Europe with their stressed focus on labour-market related integration measures. Together with a language...
Vietnamese Community in Germany 1990 - 1995
Do Thu, Trang ; Nigrin, Tomáš (advisor) ; Filipová, Lucie (referee)
The Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) in the 70`s adopted and successfully integrated the boat people, who fled from war in Vietnam. On the contrary, the German Democratic Republic (GDR) had adopted in the 80`s tens of thousands of factory workers from several socialist countries, including Vietnam. Hence this, the fall of the Berlin Wall deepened the differences in the integration of these two groups. While the former "boat people" lived a decent life, their "East German" compatriots waited years for the allocation of permits to stay and faced the attacks of right-wing extremists. However, the era after the German reunification had also brought many opportunities to start a business freely and independently, even to start a family. This thesis clearly describes the different developments within the Vietnamese community in Germany between the years of 1990-1995, which stemmed precisely from the different conditions of emigration from Vietnam. The first part focuses mainly on the characterization of the Vietnamese workers in the GDR and the boat people. This allows comparing the different integration of both groups in other chapters. In contrast, the other ones deal with the specific issues that affected the Vietnamese community in years 1990-1995. Especially, the political struggle for the status of former...

Koreček, Janis ; Králová, Kateřina (advisor) ; Šístek, František (referee)
The presented thesis deals with current immigration crisis in Greece, which has not been examined in the Czech Republic so far. The macro-level analysis elaborates process of immigration to Greece with emphasis on the period 1990-2012. Causation of the immigration is clarified through historical-demographical, sociopolitical and legislative point of view. Greece was hit by immigration wave due to the process of globalization framework and the crisis is not inflicted exclusively by the Hellenic state. This is demonstrated by the elaboration of the European legislative system and the EU policy towards immigration. Contrary to this, the Hellenic failure regarding management of immigration policy is made of insufficient complexity and flexibility of national legislation and its slow development especially in 1990s. The other specific issue is rise of racism among Hellenes. Roots of xenophobia are examined by the conception of Hellenic nationality and historical-demographical method natural history, through which statistical data are put in the chronological order. Decision- making process and administration is exposed in part dealing with Hellenic immigration law. Analyzing immigration policy of all main political subjects on the background of radical right-wing electoral success in parliament...

The thesis takes a look at how the people learned about America and about the possibilities of traveling there. The thesis also examines how the journey was made from Bohemia to one of the German ports of embarkation, as well as the difficulties and risks awaiting emigrants in such cities. Finally, this section explains the tremendous impact the new changes in sea travel - from sail to steam - had on the rapid rise in the numbers of immigrants coming into the United States. In the following section, the thesis considers some of the general difficulties faced by all new immigrants once they had...
