Czech of Spanish Speakers (case study)

The bachelor's thesis Czech of Spanish Speakers is divided into two parts. The first is theoretical and deals mainly with the issue of language transfer. The second part analyzes the errors in two specific texts provided by a Spanish native speaker, one being a written text and the other a transcript of speech. Errors are separately analyzed from a phonetic, grammatical, morphologic, syntactic and lexicological perspective. The central topic of the thesis is native language interference. The conclusion provides an overview and comparison of both texts.
The role of the mother tongue in EFL classes

This thesis focuses on the use of the mother tongue in foreign language teaching and learning. Recently there has been a notable shift towards promoting the use of the mother tongue. The theoretical part of the thesis maps the attitudes to the mother tongue in current literature as well as the suggested ways of its use in the classroom. The practical part attempts to analyse the students' attitudes towards the incorporation of Czech into English learning and teaching and their experience with its use from their secondary schools. To obtain the data, an online questionnaire was employed. The respondents are first- and second-year students of English and American studies who are expected to be able to analyse both the advantages and disadvantages of using Czech. The practical part focuses on the efficiency of Czech in comparison with English, ways of presenting grammar and vocabulary, the relation between the mother tongue use and the proficiency of students, and learning strategies of the respondents. Based on the analysis, suggestions regarding the mother tongue use are presented in the conclusion.
Pupil with different mother tongue

Diploma thesis called Pupil with a different mother tongue concerns the topic of pupils with a home language different from the language of communication of the country they are in. In the theoretical part, the thesis describes the situation of these pupils in the Czech republic and in the world, especially the topic of bilingualism which reflects the situation of pupils with a different home language which already use the second language in various degrees. Next, it deals with intercultural communication, support of these pupils in school and methods of maintaining both languages (native and second). Practical part is based on observation of bilingual children in a particular Czech school in England, further on analyzed language utterances of children with a different home language and on semi-structured interviews with some bilingual families (children and parents) in England and in the Czech republic. The diploma thesis on the topic of Integration of pupils with different mother tongues in the environment of selected Czech schools consists of a theoretical part and a practical part. In the theoretical part the basic terminology and issues related to pupils with different mother tongues is defined on the basis of a literature search. In the first part of the work I deal with migration as a phenomenon and also with the development of migration in the territory of the Czech Republic. In the second part of the work I deal with individual models of intercultural coexistence of different cultures in the territory of one state, adaptation, cultural identity, intercultural communication and possible barriers which disrupt mutual understanding. Russian as a second foreign language on the basis of French

The didactics of the FL2 (second foreign language) is a new part of the didactics which is issued from the didactics of foreign languages. It is predominantly focused on the use of comparative method and on the cognition of the teaching process as the didactics of FL2 is based on the fact that students learning FL2 already have some experience with FL1 (first foreign language). In fact, the didactics of the FL2 should always be understood as triangle of mutual relations among ML (mother language) - FL1 - FL2. When comparing French and Russian, the interface of these languages is mainly constituted in the vocabulary and the socio-cultural part of the communicative competence. And thus teachers should be sensitive to the areas of the socio-cultural competence which students are familiar with and which they aren't.

The diploma thesis focuses on bilingual education from the perspective of primary school pupil and describes learning through two languages in broader context. The theoretical part characterizes the term of bilingual education and describes its various models and forms that are implemented in schools. The second part of the thesis employs semi-structured interviews and tries to find out what is the opinion of the pupils of Toscool bilingual program. The goal is to interpret the data and suggest a set of recommendations to improve the bilingual program. Demographic behaviour of the Vietnamese people in the Czech Republic Abstract The Vietnamese have been living on the Czech territory for many years, even for several generations. Besides the Ukrainians and the Slovaks, the Vietnamese are the third largest group of foreigners in the Czech Republic. Even though the Vietnamese are nowadays an integral and common part of the Czech population, they have not yet received much demographic attention based on national data sources. This diploma thesis is focused on demographic issues of this minority. The thesis also deals with demographic differences between the Czech and Vietnamese population living in the Czech Republic. In addition, the thesis offers selected demographic features through which demographic disparities between the two parts of the population are analysed. The theoretical part of the thesis is focused on the legislative issues of terms such as: citizenship, nationality and mother tongue, as it is very important to understand and distinguish these terms, especially for the analytical part of the thesis. Basic reading skills in Czech language, bilingual primary school children This thesis focuses on reading issues in Czech language in bilingual school age children born and taught in Czech environment. The main aim is to map there reading and writing skills in Czech language of bilingual children who live and study at the primary school with one or both parents from foreign country. The theoretical part defines the different types of bilingualism. It introduces the current state of knowledge about its advantages and disadvantages define the specifics of our language and education system focusing on the problems of foreigners and bilingual children. The practical part presents a research study in which the author compares the performance of monolingual and bilingual children in test mapping a level of the basic reading and writing skills in Czech language. There were used tests such as test of reading with comprehension, reading of pseudowords, writing a dictation, and test of reading literacy with expert text. The use of translation from a foreign language text for the development of textual competencies in mother tongue

The topic of this thesis is the use of translation from a foreign language as a tool to improve textual competence in the mother tongue. The first part deals with the evolution of foreign language teaching, the status of mother tongue in foreign language teaching, positive cross-linguistic transfer and interference. Further, the concept of the method is defined and different methods of foreign language teaching are described. It's specified whether the mother tongue and translation exercises are or are not used while using each of the listed teaching methods. The second part defines translation and categorizes types of translation and contains various types types of translation exercises. The last part is focused on stylistics (narrative techniques, writing genres and functional styles). A sample of translation from Czech into Spanish and vice versa is supplied for a majority of the functional styles.
