Experiences of Vegan and Vegetarian Men Living in Turkey

Key words: Hegemonic masculinity, vegan, vegetarian, meat and men, masculinity. Although there have been many different academic studies on veganism/vegetarianism in recent years, there are limited studies specifically addressing vegan/vegetarian men. Considering the studies on this subject in Turkey, it is also seen that there is almost no research focusing on vegan and vegetarian men. This study aims to find the relation between men and meat and the role of this relationship in the experiences of vegan/vegetarian men in Turkey. Using hegemonic masculinity as a theoretical framework, I aim to illustrate if veganism/vegetarianism is popular among men in Turkey, in which environments and areas vegan and vegetarian men are exposed to negative experiences, what kind of reactions do they get in social environments and what institutions are directly or indirectly involved in the experience of vegan and vegetarian men. Additionally, my thesis researches the position of vegetarian and vegan men within Turkey-specific hegemonic masculinity practices. My work also specifically addresses the question of whether vegan and vegetarian men challenge this Turkey-specific hegemonic masculinity, and if so, how does the process take place.

Ethical aspects of photojournalism with focus on sports

Theoretical part of this bachelor's thesis utilizes relevant scholar literature and interviews with photographers to define ethically disputed aspects of photojournalism such as invasion of privacy, media coverage of crises, depiction of violence, death and nudity, as well as picture manipulation - both before a photography is taken and during postproduction process. The thesis particularly focuses on sports photography and ethically disputed aspects related specifically to this field. Followingly, it lays out the limits of photographic display - which are crucial to discuss in relation to the subject of this text - and the trinity of basic principles regarding ethical decision-making (utilitarian principal, absolutist principal, golden rule) that should be considered by photojournalists and picture editors while publishing images that might be considered ethically controversial. Practical part of this thesis captures youth football team FK Admira Prague during 2020/21 and 2021/22 seasons. It shows their training, matches and the backstage of their football world - both its light and dark sides.

Gender roles in fairy tales

Fairy tales have an educational and socialization impact on children. In fairy tales children find answers to questions, problems and situations, that life brings them. Fairy tales reflect true life - people come into the world, fall ill, die, get poorer, steal, get jealous, love and hate to death and they are willing to lay down their life for helping others. A child feels genuineness of story, finds something what it had experienced itself. Children identify themselves with fairy tale characters and their characteristics, heroes of stories are their models. So naturally children create their hierarchy of values, because moral message of fairy tales is clear and that is its advantage for children. Fairy tales interfere in all aspects of life and education. One of the aspects is the area of gender. In my research I presented the children a traditional fairy tale and less traditional fairy tale, where male and female roles are reversed. The aim of the research was to find out how boys and girls perceive the division of roles in fairy tales. I led structured interviews with children and compared the collected data with the gathered theoretical information.

Virtuosity and Performance of Masculinity: Music Ethnography of a Non-Roma Gypsy Jazz Group in Prague

Univerzita Karlova v Praze, Filozofická fakulta Ústav hudební vědy Virtuosity and Performance of Masculinity: Music Ethnography of a Non-Roma Gypsy Jazz Group in Prague Žofie Kašparová 2014 Abstract In this ethnography I examine the gypsy jazz band Sylvanio Orchestra which is based in Prague, Czech Republic. This research consists largely of my observations at their performances, interviews with the band members as well as my personal experience of being a musician and a woman in this predominantly male collective. Thus, this essay is partly an autoethnography. The research focuses on a group of non-Roma musicians which play gypsy jazz music. I describe how their performances work, which consist mostly of jam sessions (participatory performance), and which mechanisms occur in these environments. Virtuosity is one of the main characteristics of the genre and is coupled with a sense of competitiveness. The group appears exclusive from the outside which might be caused by intellectual musical communication codes which outsiders cannot read and which are connected with the virtuosity typical in gypsy jazz. I suggest that virtuosity, competitiveness along with other characteristics of gypsy jazz performance might be perceived as masculine. How to invite men? Project Patron - the case study of engaging men in the areas of civic, public and private life which needs their deeper participation Abstract The support of engagement of men in the areas of civic, private and public life which showing the lack of their involvement becomes a topic in the last decade on the level of EU and some national states. But there is just little social research focused on the practical ways how to support the engagement of men in these areas. This paper offers the view from perspective of the studies of civil society - which is especially focused on the motivations to volunteering - combined with the perspective of the studies of men and masculinities. The core of this paper is a case study of the project Patron in which the adult men creates friendly-based relationships with the young men from the institutional care and help them to manage the leaving of this care to the "real life". The aim of this research is analyze the motivation of these men which leads to their participation on this project - mainly in the relations to the experience of manhood and masculinity. Gender aspects of children's literature

The relation between literature and gender themes has been studied from the first half of twentieth century especially in America and Great Britain. At the beginning it was concern of feminism orientated activists who focused on folk tales and their influence on female identity. Later the range of scientists focused on gender became wider just as the range of themes related to gender did. From the end of last century we don't consider the theme of gender as a specific theme of feminists wanting equality of gender. There are some new topics as for example new models of family and their presentation in children's literature. As new models of family we understand living in divorced family or living with parents of the same sex. Authors of these books want to help children to deal with this new situation but they want to impress the public as well. The most important books focused on this theme were published thirty years ago in the USA and Great Britain but we still can't find this in our bookshops. This finding seems understandable with books with gay and lesbian themes, because it's not so long since the registered partnership was legalized and there are probably not many families with parents of the same gender.
