Borodáčová, Jana ; Klusáková, Luďa (advisor) ; Tinková, Daniela (referee)
The author makes an analysis of the book of travels by Arthur Young who from a position of a physiocrat observed and explored the economic situation of French country during his three journeys in 1787 /1788 and 1789/90. The traveller used his own experience of agronomist and he supplemented his observation with information from local landed proprietors who were interested in agronomics. He also broadened his horizons via conversations with his French friends . When he conducted a survey of conditions of French country he used his method of statistics which he introduces during his preceding research journeys in England and Ireland. But the traveller omitted the social side of the country life when using this method. The characteristic of this method was abridged of a general opinion of educated Enlightenment class. The work of Arthur Young is also a typical Enlightenment book of travels even thought the aim of his journey the author broke out of traditional destinations. The traveller delimited himself distinctivelly nationally in the French environment and for this reason he expressed his opinions from a position of Englishman. This feature is characteristic of the whole contents of the book of travels, no mater if he adressed himself to agriculture, behaviour and customs of French society or to...
Architectural transformation of urban centers. Czech towns 1945 - 1989.
Kurz, Michal ; Klusáková, Luďa (advisor) ; Randák, Jan (referee)
The topic of this thesis is the architectural transformation (i.e. redevelopment and new buildings) of historical centers in Czech towns in the years 1945-1989. The author tries to put this process into context of the period architecture and heritage conservation and to answer some basic questions. How were the conceptions of an optimal form of new buildings intended for historical surroundings being generated and developed? What factors did these conceptions influence? Why were new buildings so often being located just to these valuable town parts and who did in the process of their formation participate? The thesis is divided into five parts which are connected in time and the author emphasizes the topic continuity with the pre-war period, because we can observe the conflict between traditionalism and modernism as well as the advantages and the limits both of these methods as far back as the 1930s. The examples are chosen within the set of 71 Czech district towns except the capital city Prague. Keywords: Modernisation of historical city-centers, urbanism, architecture, heritage, 1945-1989

Perception of political boundaries and their role in the division of geographical space: the Irish-British and Bohemian-German boundaries between 1750 and 1850
Power, Martina ; Klusáková, Luďa (referee)
Perception of political boundaries and their role in the division of geographical space: the Irish-British and Bohemian-German boundaries between 1750 and 1850 Abstract This thesis aims to assess changing perceptions of political boundaries and space as represented in German travel literature about Bohemia and British travelogues about Ireland between 1750 and 1850. Both countries had multi-ethnic and multicultural features, historically defined boundaries and were parts of more extensive political units. The perception of political belonging is examined especially in the context of integration tendencies coming from the state cores. The thesis also examines the importance of alternative types of boundaries, e.g. geographical boundaries (sea and mountains that were often described as "natural boundaries") and cultural boundaries. It is presumed that confessional, linguistic and ethnic boundaries, as well as boundaries between different types of landscape (mountains or lowland) and between poor and prosperous regions, will be of importance in Bohemia and Ireland. Although the presence of cultural boundaries could have a manifestation in the physical appearance of landscape, the construction of the cultural boundaries is considered to be a product of observers'/travellers' mind. Therefore the thesis analyses...
