Artificial intelligence and politeness: a small-scale experimental study

This study aims to verify the hypothesis that an AI application provides better responses when given polite prompts. Based on the established politeness theories by Brown and Levinson (1987) and Leech (1983, 2014), an experiment was designed and conducted, in which ChatGPT, popular chatbot based on the conversation with users, was prompted using positive and negative politeness strategies and without them. The generated responses are analysed and then compared in terms of content and language means. Drawing from the experiment’s findings, this paper provides a set of practical recommendations for users to optimize AI prompts to achieve more accurate results.

Style of science and technology - characteristic features

This thesis deals with the characteristics of the style of science and technology in English. It identifies the original combination of features used in this style. The individual features are consequently divided into six relevant categories. These categories are labeled as communicative intention, extralinguistic, graphical, graphological, lexical, and syntactic features. Furthermore, the features in the respective categories are listed, and the reason for their use in the science and technology style is described. These texts were analyzed, and several extracts were always chosen. Subsequently, these extracts were categorized according to their features, and the features were again described. The last part of the thesis shows the contrast between this style and other styles. This work can serve as a template when writing scientific texts; it will help to follow the norms of this style and can result in avoiding common mistakes.

New Technologies in Travelling and Tourism

This bachelor´s thesis aims to explore the transformative impact of emerging technologies on the tourism industry, with a focus on Information and Communication Technology (ICT), E-tourism, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Augmented Reality (AR), and Virtual Reality (VR). Emphasising the increased availability of information, the history of the transition from traditional methods of transport to the integration of modern transportation and the Internet is discussed. The paper discusses the definition, functionality and practical application of artificial intelligence, augmented reality, and virtual reality to examine their advantages and challenges. It is important to note that while these technologies offer immense potential, their implementation is not without difficulties. The challenges of implementing these technologies in tourism, such as high initial costs and the need for skilled personnel, are discussed. The adaptability of these technologies and their role in rebuilding the industry shows that they managed to cope with the COVID-19 pandemic. Ethical dilemmas, appropriate implementation and the need for regulations are highlighted for sustainable growth in this new landscape, as the introduction of these innovations continues to shape tourism as we know it.

The Englishes - a survey of the world Englishes

This thesis analyzes history of English language in different countries, which are divided by Kachru’s model into three parts. In introduction General history of English spread through colonies is mentioned. Afterwards thesis is structured into three parts using Kachru’s model. First part is called “English as a native language.” In this part author describes history of English language in countries such as Great Britain, United States of America, Australia, and South Africa. Second part is called “English as a second official language,” and it describes history of countries to which English was brought by the colonizers. In this countries, varieties of English language are in close contact with native languages and are evolved depending on area. Parts of this category are countries such as India, Singapore, and Philippines. Third part is called “English as a foreign language” and lists countries in which English language is recognized as international means of communication or lingua franca. In this part author mentions brief history of English language in countries like Brazil and China. Last part of this thesis is conclusion in which author sums up the obtained knowledge of the topic and notes that this topic will be expanded in bachelors’ thesis

Comparative analysis of professional English texts

The purpose of this bachelor thesis is to compare three professional English texts which describe humanoid robots, each from a different perspective. The first text is taken from a scientific magazine called ‘Science Robotics‘ and represents the popular-scientific style. The second text is taken from the book ‘Humanoid Robots, Human-like machines‘ and it is an example of the scientific prose style. The third material used for the analysis is a video that was released on a YouTube channel of company CNET. It was necessary to convert the video to written form, before starting to analyse it. Certainly, there are considerable distinctions between these texts because they are intended for different types of readers or listeners. The bachelor thesis describes the contents of these three texts and explains their styles. Moreover, the thesis focuses on the comparison of spoken and written discourse, the language functions of the texts according to the linguist Roman Jacobson, and the register levels of the analysis.

The Co-operative Principle in technical texts

The thesis analyses the usage of the Cooperative principle in technical texts as well as concepts related to it. The Cooperative principle specified by Grice is one of the most prominent theories in pragmatics, and its usage can be observed or neglected almost in every communication. With that in mind, the author of the thesis analyzes technical texts and describes various pragmatic aspects related to this principle. Furthermore, the thesis describes the Politeness principle, which is related to the Cooperative principle, demonstrates its appliance and describes various politeness strategies used in technical texts. The pragmatic aspects of the technical texts are explained in this thesis as well, and their usage is shown in the text. Lastly, the series of technical texts are compared with texts non-technical and the difference in usage of the Cooperative and Politeness principle is observed and described.

The conclusion outlines a possible view on the interconnection of Science, Technology and Media in the future.

The work presented is divided into three main parts: theoretical introduction, translation of the technical text and translation analysis. The theoretical introduction deals with the types of translation and classifications. In the last part, the language phenomena and characteristic features of the English and Czech languages are analyzed on the examples of the translated texts.

This bachelor thesis is focused on problems related with the most sophisticated IT technologies such as the Internet, smartphones, the Internet portal YouTube and defines terms such as YouTuber, streamer and streaming. It also deals with the way how these technologies influence people and our society. In the thesis, both positive and negative aspects of these technologies are described.
