The Conception of Virginity in Greek Culture
Svobodová, Markéta ; Chlup, Radek (advisor) ; Pehal, Martin (referee)
Maidenhood is an interesting topic in the context of ancient Greek mythology and ritual. Despite the fact that women had a marginal position within the Greek polis, they were important in myth and ritual. Maidens in particular played an interesting part in Greek myth and ritual, mainly because they were in a transitional state between childhood and womanhood. Myths and rituals concerning maidens involve the goddesses Artemis and Hera, who help them with this transition. At the same time, this transitional state of maidenhood helped the girls learn to be women. Maidenhood transformed them from "wild" children into women ready to accept their roles as mothers and wives. One of the key questions that I would like to answer is how Greeks defined the concept of maidenhood. The maidens in myth and ritual that I'm concerned with are for example Pythia, Pandora, Atalanta or the Danaides. But who was a maiden? Why was she such an important figure in myth and ritual? To find an answer to this question I have turned to ancient Greek texts concerning the anatomy and health of women, and ancient Greek mythology and rituals have helped me interpret them. In the context of Greek thought, maidens were self-consistent in a way. They were pure, untouched and that is where their power came from.

This bachelor's thesis deals with the topic of virginity loss focusing on its understanding and perception by women of various sexual identifications, because the virginity loss is an important moment in a woman's life. The research is qualitative, with seven women participating - four heterosexual and three non-heterosexual identities aged in the range of 20 - 24 years. Data was collected through interviews via an online platform from March to April 2021. The work focuses on the moment of the first sexual experience, the definition of key terms, ideas and feelings associated with the first sexual experience and the impact on subsequent intimate life. This work is based on existing sociological frameworks, which are described in the theoretical part. It presents that a woman may not perceive first sexual experience as a virginity loss and the virginity loss may not be the beginning of an intimate life. Key words: Gynaecological experiences, virginity, premarital sexuality, women's health, gynaecological health, Turkey. This study explores the relationship of ideas about virginity and gynaecological health experiences of women in Ankara, Turkey. I conducted in depth semi-structured interviews with ten heterosexual, 23-30 years old, college-graduate Turkish women. Using intersectionality as a methodological lens, I seek to understand how gender, age, class and religion play a role in the correlation of virginity and gynaecology experiences. Five main themes illuminated the participant women's experiences: (1) feeling of inclusion, (2) the effect of religion, (3) class difference, (4) selection of doctors (5) access to information on gynaecological health. Findings revealed that participants define virginity as a taboo and a barrier during gynaecological healthcare experiences. In accordance with the previous researches, I have found that dominant virginity discourse limit women's access to knowledge on their gynaecological health. This study also dwelled on the differences in the experiences of women according to participant women's age, religion, class and social status. In addition to previous research, this study revealed that judgemental comments of the doctors and high fees of private clinics...
