Revitalization of Technical Museum Brno
Kinnert, Filip ; Zemánek, Václav (referee) ; Zemánková, Helena (advisor)
Museum is firstly a public building in the city. Although, most of the work of collection, conservation and restauration is being done behind a closed door, with the museum's significance and location it has a great importance by co-creating the city environment. Reviving of our defined project area is potentially a big step for reviving the whole suburb. Technical museum of Brno has relatively good position nearby the Technology park, but currently not using much of the potential. This project adsresses these posibilities and propose a urban solution for enrichment of the museum to become a full-blown place IN THE CITY, a place for meeting, passing through and stopping by.
Post- cultural town: urban wilderness in shrinking Vimperk
Singer, Kateřina
607 urban structures labelled with a city status were registered in the Czech Republic in 2019. 187 of them experienced a population decline of more than 3% between 2009 and 2019. The project presents a former important Golden Path centre, South Bohemian town of Vimperk, with a decrease of 5.9%, also showing other signs of a shrinking city in the post-revolutionary period. The study investigates one of the consequences of the process of shrinkage, gaps in the urban structure. A mosaic of indeterminate neglected spaces in various stages of decay are absorbed by the urban wilderness. The research explores the return of the landscape element to the forgotten places of the built environment and the symbiosis of this new urban landscape and local residents. Based on a personal analysis and discussions with local experts, the research identifies, documents and then subjectively evaluates 30 forgotten places. The criteria are historical and cultural value, overall character of the location, location in relation to the town, owner’s interest, technical condition and current operation. A scenario and a level of management are proposed for the selected locations, underlining the respect of the new wilderness and the birth of the post-cultural town. The popularisation of research results changes the perspective on neglected or negatively perceived outbreaks of natural life within the cultural landscape. The question remains how the new landscape will change the town planning strategy of non-growing or shrinking towns in general.
The Scar
Sláma, Matěj ; Nytra, Martin (referee) ; Mazanec, Martin (advisor)
Diploma thesis Scar is a short film about the fictional history of the found „monument“. In the animated film, I examine the context and meaning of the „monument“ in a virtual environment that I created based on visual documentation and mapping of specific places that I explored during my expeditions through the urban landscape of Brno and The Hague. These are mainly „lost“ spaces (also referred to as vague terrain or no man's land), which inspired me to create my own visual map of my urban explorations. The starting point of the work is personal lived experience, which I reflect by documenting places, creating 3D objects and manipulating 3D scans of „lost“ spaces with elements of computer games. In the resulting film, the viewer follows a guide–walk through a virtual environment where objective reality is intentionally blended with a fictional world built on the author's imagination.
Palmovka: A Rupture in the Urban Structure
Platil, David ; Uherek, Zdeněk (advisor) ; Grygar, Jakub (referee)
The topic of this diploma thesis is the landscape, specifically the urban landscape of Prague's Palmovka and its various dimensions. In a social anthropological and culturally geographical discourse, the landscape is a complex, multidimensional and multi-layered concept that opens up interesting research questions and imaginations. In this discourse, the landscape is not only a summary of the material aspects of the natural environment around us, but it is also a field of political negotiations, power tensions, experiences, representations and generally interactions between itself and man. From this point of view, the author explores the landscape of Palmovka, which is itself a multi-layered and complex in a view of the diversity of urban structures, historical memos, unrealized visions of development and long-term search for unified concept by various actors during political negotiations that would give this inner city landscape a face. This negotiation is also related to observable processes changing both the physical and social dimension of Palmovka based on efforts to regenerate the area. These processes also include the gentrification which means the migration of young and mostly university-educated people to the older parts of the inner city. Therefore, mainly on the basis of field...

Topographies of Culture and Identity: The Role of Landscapes and Cityscapes in Selected Film Representations of Ireland
Pavlíčková, Tereza ; Wallace, Clare (advisor) ; Pilný, Ondřej (referee)
1 Abstract The thesis focuses on the role of landscapes and cityscapes in selected film representations of Ireland. It is the discipline of cultural geography which serves as the primary theoretical basis for this analysis. Firstly, the general observations concerning the social elaboration of place are applied within the particular cultural context. Thus, it becomes revealed that these socio- cultural practices bear a special significance in Irish culture. Apart from that, the thesis also fully delineates the complex nature of both the concept of Irish identity and Irish cinema. This account provides the basis for to the primary assertion that film portrayals of Ireland require strongly a wide, non-linear analytical approach. Importantly, the thesis also draws attention to particular cultural dichotomies which prevail within most realms of Irish society, showing a tension between its relationship to the present and the past. Within the context of film representation, this binary cultural perspective is then presented as a phenomenon which has had a significant impact on both the process of filmmaking in Ireland, as well as on the perception of produced films. Especially in the second case, the effect can be perceived as rather negative, since it prevents the realization of a fully non-exclusionary...
