My diploma thesis is concerned with the possible effects of linguistic transfer between a Czech grammar school students' acquired languages, namely English and French or German, on their performance in these languages. The thesis is written on the backdrop of the Czech Education System. The System of Curricular Documents and the related documents which predetermine the students' language development are introduced, and their most important implications for the development of the students' L2 and L3 are listed out. The foreign languages which this thesis is predominantly focused on, namely English, French and German, are analysed diachronically, synchronically and typologically to establish their main principles, their similarities, and differences, which may serve as the possible sources of linguistic transfer. Cognitive processes underlying the development of L2 and L3 systems in the context of the Czech Education System and relevant theories are introduced, including the variables which determine to a significant degree the development of these languages and may have implications for the possible instances of linguistic transfer. Arabisms in the Present-Day French

The thesis Arabisms in the Present-Day French deals with loanwords from the Arabic language in contemporary French. It is divided into theoretical and practical part. The first part defines the concept of Arabisms and describes the issue of borrowing in more detail. It deals with the circumstances of the adoption of Arabisms into French and also with the modification mechanisms for their integration. The second part consists in corpus research, which aims to evaluate the occurrence of French slang expressions of Arabic origin in contemporary French.

The aim of this Bachelor's thesis is to describe the phenomenon of doublets in the Present-Day French. The work is divided into two parts - the theoretical and the experimental. The first part aims to describe the evolution of French language in diachronic approach as well as to explain the term doublet and its division. The experimental part consists of analysing the use of selected doublets in linguistic corpus over centuries.
French interjections in the Intercorp corpus and their translations into Czech

Analysis of the functions of the past conditional in French in the light of its Czech equivalents in the parallel corpus InterCorp

Theoretical part of this work generally deals with past conditional in French. Basic types of function of past conditional in French are defined using fundamental French grammar books and French textbooks. Furthermore, work resumes characteristic of this phenomenon in Czech language. In the following empirical part the phenomenon is analysed using lingual material gained from the parallel corpus InterCorp. The phenomenon is analysed in perspective of frequency and subsequently in the context of its equivalents in Czech.
The substantivised infinitive in French

v anglickém jazyce: This bachelor thesis deals with the substantivised infinitive in contemporary French. After defining the basic terms (noun, infinitive and substantivisation) the characteristics of the lexicalized subtantivised infinitives and the related infinitive forms are observed in detail. Both of these categories are analyzed from the semantic, morphological, syntactic and marginally also diachronic perspective with simultaneous consultation of authoritative French grammars, dictionaries and other scholar works. The second part which is the actual focus of the work concentrates on marginally used substantivized infinitives which have not been lexicalised yet. The research is carried out on the basis of the French corpus FRANTEXT.

Jana Šindelářová DEPARTMENT: Department of Education SUPERVISOR: PhDr. RNDr. Hana Voňková, Ph.D. et Ph.D. ABSTRACT: The aim of this thesis is to find out why Czech secondary school students chose to study French as their second foreign language and how satisfied they are with this decision. The theoretical part concerns itself with teaching languages in European schools and in the Czech Republic with the focus on French language. Furthermore, it deals with the status of French language both in the world and in the Czech Republic, and with the benefits the knowledge of French language brings. The empirical part of this thesis depicts a research conducted by means of questionnaire construction. The sample was 100 students from the lower and 163 students from the higher stage of secondary schools called "gymnasium" (grammar school) in Prague. (185 girls and 78 boys) The research shows that students chose the foreign language mainly themselves and the most frequent reason for choosing French was that they liked the language in general. The present Bachelor's thesis presents the topic of English Loanwords in French information technology terminology. The French terminology of this fast growing industry is not standardized for now. The classification of loanwords as well as the insight into the history of interaction between the two languages is introduced in the theoretical part. The practical part comprises of an analysis of the use of 20 information technology terms through a questionnaire distributed among 98 respondents.
Approach to Phonetics in French Textbooks

This thesis deals with the changing role of phonetics in the history of teaching French as a foreign language. It provides a probe into the most significant methods of language teaching (the Grammar Translation Method, the Direct Method, the Audiolingual Method, the SGAV, Communicative Approach), including the current role of phonetics in teaching French. It also outlines a possible further development. The historical overview is then demonstrated on chosen French textbooks representing the individual methods, including a more detailed analysis of two contemporary textbooks. The analysis aims to provide information concerning the frequency of phonetic exercises, their focus, type and the use of phonetic transcription. Based on the theoretical background and the practical analysis, a list of inspiring approaches and techniques for current French teaching is made.
