Alternative language in Václav Havel's plays - rhythm in plays The Increased Difficulty of Concentration and Largo desolato -
Toyoshima, Minami ; Topolová, Barbara (advisor) ; Vodička, Libor (referee)
(in English): In Václav Havel's plays, language often loses its communicative function in dialogs, since characters' speeches mostly consist of phrases, which replace the plot-forming function of the play. The genre of drama is based on dialog, so the question arises: is there an "alternative language" that can replace the dysfunctional communication between texts and its receivers? In this thesis the author regards rhythm of Havel's plays as an "alternative language" and analyses it in the plays The Increased Difficulty of Concentration and Largo desolato. The first chapter demonstrates Havel's obsession with structure and musical inspiration in the creation of his plays, as well as the issue of language in them. The second chapter discusses rhythm from a theoretical perspective. The chapter introduces the definition of rhythm and its application in theatre studies. Additionally, it recalls Josef Šafařík's concept of "rubato," which connects the concept of rhythm with the issue of human mechanization, a common theme in Havel's plays. The third chapter analyses the rhythm of The Increased Difficulty of Concentration and Largo desolato. The analysis aims to clarify the rhythm characteristics in both plays and reflect on their effects and meanings. In chapter four, the author analyses the...

Jiri Trnka (1912 - 1969) ranks among the foremost representatives of Czech modern art in the 20th century and alongside the most remarkable protagonists of the visual art scene over a period ranging from the late 1930s through the end of the1960s. He stood out within that movement for his multiple talents, as a draughtsman, book illustrator, puppet designer, painter, animated film-maker, sculptor and stage designer. He achieved admirable success in these fields of activity. In the early 40s a new prospect opened up for him connected with work in theatre, as he took up the post of stage designer at the National Theatre in Prague, an assignment which enabled him to put to use his specific talent for stagecraft. He created 13 stage decorations together. Trnka was able to create unforgettable productions thanks the cooperation with Jiri Frejka or Karel Dostal. I documented and explained Trnka's work in the context of the Nation Theatre during the Second World War. I defined his style in the relation to his contemporaries in the end of work. Špejtková, Petra ; Sarkissian, Alena (advisor) ; Topolová, Barbara (referee)
The theme of my bachelor's thesis is women's body in Sokol organization. I focus on the inclusion of women in the Sokol and the creation of women's unions. I also describe the discourse into which the female Sokol body enters, what meanings are generated through the dual concept of the body, and how the Sokol women's social body has transformed over the years. I apply this theoretical part in the second part of the thesis by analysing the specific performance of Sokol women and analysing the development of the Sokol women's social body between 1869 and 1938. Key words Sokol, women, physicality, social body, cultural performances

Holečková, Veronika ; Pšenička, Martin (advisor) ; Topolová, Barbara (referee)
Bachelor's thesis focuses on forms, demonstrations and aspects of horror genre in chosen artistic medias which are literature, theatre and film. As a method for investigation of diverse aspects and demonstrations of this genre was chosen a form of analysis of concrete art works that represent particular medias. The base of this thesis is a work of literature by writer Susan Hill The Woman in Black (1983), which inspired the pieces of art representing other two artistic medias: a theatre performance (2017) of the same name directed by Adam Doležal in the City Theatre in Kladno based on a theatre adaptation (1987) by Stephen Mallatratt and a movie adaptation (2012) of the same name directed by James Watkins based on a script (2012) by Jane Goldman. These analyses will be followed by comparison of their results, where the conclusion will try to offer the reader comparison and insight into the functioning of horror genre aspects in the chosen artistic medias. Key words Horror genre, The Woman in Black, Susan Hill, Adam Doležal, Stephen Mallatratt, literature, theatre, analysis, tension, horror
Radio Plays in Czech Radio during the Period of Normalization
Míšková, Gabriela ; Just, Vladimír (advisor) ; Topolová, Barbara (referee)
The master's thesis is dedicated to Ivan Škapa and his dramaturgical work on the original radio plays in the Czechoslovak Radio in the years 1977-1984. His personal fate demonstrates some tragic aspects of the so far little-described and complicated period of normalization in the Czechoslovak Radio, as well as the daily radio practice in the Radio Plays Department during the observed period. The key point of the work is the extensive case surrounding Jiří Just's original radio play Clowns and Patriots. The detailed analysis of the case is a model example of the functioning of an institutions in a totalitarian regime and the subsequent effects on the fate of an individual. The inventive dramaturgical work of Ivan Škapa is placed in the context of the dramatic creation of the given period, and the analysis of the play Clowns and Patriots and its clash with normalizing censorship also affects the difficult conditions of the dramaturg's work in the given period. The master thesis is based on available sources and literature for the given period, which it was necessary to confront with the oral history research method.

Marková, Jana ; Topolová, Barbara (advisor) ; Pšenička, Martin (referee)
The Diploma Thesis named Three Prague theatre buildings and their memory deals with the history and transformations of the status of the three oldest theatre buildings in Prague, namely The Estates Theatre, The National Theatre, and The State Opera. This thesis aims to show how their role has changed over the centuries. The introductory chapter offers a historical overview of the mentioned buildings, from their foundation to the present times. Next, the thesis deals with the perception of the theatre buildings during different periods with the help of the period press and scientific literature. More attention is devoted to the significant moments, such as the confiscation of the Estates Theatre in 1920 or the celebrations of the Year of the Czech theatre in 1983, which showed that the theatre buildings do not only fulfill the role of cultural institutions but also represent national ideas. The text covers the development between 1783 and 2022 and is divided into several time blocks. The Diploma Thesis demonstrates how significant role these buildings hold in the Czech history and even in today's society.
