"To become useful to church and state ". Joseph II 's General Seminaries on the example of the Seminary in Hradisko u Olomouce

This master's thesis deals with the phenomenon of general seminars and the reform of theological studies carried out by Josef II in the Habsburg Monarchy between 1783 and 1790, with a particular focus on the seminar in Hradisko u Olomouce. The thesis will be divided into three main chapters. The first chapter provides a more general overview of the overall system of seminars, the most important debates on their establishment, and to some extent (as far as sources and existing historiography allow) a comparison of conditions in various seminars in the monarchy. The second chapter then focuses on the Olomouc seminar itself and partially fills in the more general structure outlined in the first chapter with specific data from the Moravian-Silesian province. An important part is also the presentation of specific teaching materials used in the seminar. The third chapter concentrates on the students (primarily using the example of boarders of the Olomouc seminar). Their daily schedule will be introduced, along with the overall ideal of proper spiritual conduct, which state authorities followed when opening the seminar. Comparison of Adult Education Systems of the First and the Third Czechoslovak Republic

The aim of thesis is to compare the adult education systems of the first and the third republics of Czechoslovakia by identifying the similarities and differences between the two systems. The systems are compared in terms of the role of the state and associations, the financing of adult education, state-controlled education of adult education workers, the legislation which regulates the adult education and the role of the Masaryk's Educational Institute as an institution that had a overarching character for the adult education activities in Czechoslovakia. An important context is provided by the introductory part of the thesis, which is devoted to the terminological anchoring and the development of adult education from the national revival, through the Austro-Hungarian period until the First World War. The elaboration of the different areas of comparison is based on the study of period and contemporary literary sources, magazines, studies and laws. The final part of the thesis is devoted to the comparison of similar and different features of the two systems, and to the discussion about the influences that impacted the further development of adult education. The film and the railways. Films which take place in the train

Film i vlak jsou symboly moderní doby, rychlosti, osudovosti a pomíjivosti. Tématem této diplomové práce jsou filmy, které se odehrávají ve vlaku. Nikoli filmy, v nichž hraje železnice jakoukoliv roli. Soustředím se především na jízdu vlakem a její filmové zobrazování. Tento typ syžetu je oblíbený v literatuře i v celých dějinách filmu, protože jízda vlakem zaručuje, že se něco bude dít, i když se zdánlivě nebude dít nic. Základní premisa všech uměleckých děl odehrávajících se ve vlaku je, že cesta vlakem znamená změnu. Práce je rozdělena do dvou částí: teoretické, ve které se zaměřuji na vybudování a popis vztahu mezi železnicí a kinematografií, vztahu, který je založen na modernistických základech rychlosti a mobility, a analytické, ve které jsem si vybral modelové příklady filmu, které zastupují určité varianty filmového zpracování jízdy ve vlaku. Towards the war film fiction

Při zkoumání žánru fikčního válečného filmu se leckdy dostaneme do pasti osobních vášní. Válku jsme nikdy nezažili, máme o ní často jen letmou představu, která vychází ze spousty různých druhů informací, které jsme o ní získali. To, jakým způsobem je zobrazována, možná vůbec neovlivní to, jak bychom se v ní zachovali my. Možná že fikční válečný film je jen takovou hrou, takovým uzavřeným světem hrdinů, kteří umírají, zabíjejí, znásilňují, vzpomínají na manželky, pijí v důstojnických klubech, tančí s děvčaty, poslouchají rozkazy, bloudí po lese a třeba se topí v moři. Válka jako mohutný, nezvratný a mimořádně dynamický proces, který naprosto rozruší struktury ve společnosti, se prostě ve všech svých aspektech zachytit nedá a je tedy jen na nás, jak budeme který film vnímat. Když jsem mluvil o tématu své práce s různými lidmi, většinu z nich vlastně tento žánr nebaví a nemají k němu žádný vztah. V době války se však rapidně zvyšuje počet lidí, kteří si k žánru vztah "najdou". Podobně se tomu děje i v dobách blížící se války. Umění je sice vždy uzavřené do sebe, ale právě v krizových dobách má poměrně zásadní roli komunikátora mezi jakýmsi kolektivním celkem (státem, armádou, národem) a jednotlivcem. The anticipation and Mulholland Drive by David Lynch

This thesis deals with David Lynch's Mulholland Drive from the viewpoint of anticipatory processes revolving around it and taking place in its perception. The part covering anticipations on behalf of the author stems from interviews with the director, David Bordwell's theory of narration and works of Constance School of reception aesthetics. These two theoretical frameworks provide basis also for the part covering anticipations on behalf of recipients, which treats critics and spectators separately. This part works with published texts on Mulholland Drive and spectators' opinions reflected in internet forums. After a chapter on anticipations from the distribution viewpoint this thesis analyses to a great detail anticipatory processes involved in the course of Mulholland Drive's perception. It understands the film as consisting from two parts, which it treats separately, and describes anticipations on the levels of scenes, motives, and the film as a whole. The thesis also comes up with a model explaining the popularity of Lynch's work across various spectator groups. Anticipatory processes not only run on the film's various levels but also co-influence its impact. Dealing with Mulholland Drive through anticipation provided for a complex analysis and revealed anticipation as its structural element.

Everyone's heroine. Filmic representation of Jean d'Arc

Tato diplomová práce je základním úvodem do problematiky filmové reprezentace Jany z Arku. Pokusila jsem se ji reflektovat v širším dějinném i teoreticko-filmologickém kontextu. Z nedostatku prostoru jsem ve své práci opomenula velmi důležitou a zajímavou otázku, proč si režiséři vybrali zrovna postavu Jany z Arku, rovněž jsem se nevěnovala osobě Karla VII., která tvoří jakýsi pandán k Janině figuře. To vše je otázkou budoucího výzkumu, stejně jako zvážení dalších možností i případných limitů mnou navrhované metody, která se věnovala elipsám v rámci narativního příběhu, ovšem nezabývala se spojením těchto výpustek, což je nesmírně podstatný krok k prohloubení této metody. Mým cílem nebylo podat ucelený obraz o Janě z Arku ve filmu, ale seznámit čtenáře s bohatou filmografií o této postavě a navrhnout metodu, jak je možné na historické filmy pohlížet. Snad se mi alespoň do jisté míry podařilo vykreslit Janin obraz a její reprezentaci na filmovém plátně v její mnohavrstevnosti, neboť právě v neuchopitelnosti této figury spatřuji její největší kouzlo - a snad právě proto mě stále "případ Jana z Arku" zajímá, vzrušuje i provokuje. 105

Future families in the past tense: strategies of using home movies in documentary films

Synopsis This thesis aims to define the basic strategies used to tackle and process home movie footage in compilation documentary films by Péter Forgács, Jan Šikl and Marek Šulík. It also aims to outline how these strategies influence and regulate the ways the historical period in question is communicated in these films. The source material of the home movie will first be discussed in its original family context as the product of a specific media memory practice that at the same time determines the rhetoric and aesthetics of this material. In the second part, the thesis will focus on two basic strategies for the use of home movie footage in these films. While the first strategy uses home movies to thematize and problematize the possibilities of historical representation, the second one exploits the mode of authenticity and strong affective potential of the home movie to block out active viewer engagement.

Sexual Identity as Cinematic Subversion: the Discourse of New Queer Cinema

The thesis proposes the New Queer Cinema chapter of film history as a paradigm of queer film's subversive practices. The theoretically and historically focused first part establishes the term queer, expounds its possible applications to film in the realm of queer film studies and in the third chapter critically introduces the 'new wave' of queer film New Queer Cinema. The analytical part assigns queer and its possible functions as its basis for inquiry. It consists of two parts: the first performs the formal-content analysis of the pivotal film Swoon (1992); the final chapter builds on its conclusions and examines the corpus of New Queer Cinema films along four analytical cuts in order to describe how they produce the queer discourse. The final output of the thesis is an open model of prospective approaches to queer film.

Outwit, Outplay, Outlast: The Cultural Study of the Reality TV Phenomenon Survivor

This bachelor thesis is occupied with the phenomenon of the reality TV show Survivor (CBS, 2000). This cultural essay examines the historical development of the reality TV genre. Further, it studies cultural meanings of the reality TV show Survivor, such as a social darwinism, rituals, a life in a community or a voting drama. The main part deals with possibilities of the representation of masculinity in television. Multiple masculinities are analyzed by using the methodology of men's studies, especially through the perspective of the hierarchy of masculinities and the hegemonic masculinities by Raewyn Connell, and through the concept of the mutilated man by Elisabeth Badinter. The final case study is focused on the representation of nonhegemonic masculinities in reality TV show Survivor.
