Francophone autobiographical graphic novels in the Czech Republic: reception and translation from a multimodal perspective

This thesis examines the reception and translation of francophone autobiographical comics in the Czech Republic. It is based on theoretical knowledge from the fields of theory and history of autobiographical comics, multimodality theory and comics translation. Based on data from library and book databases, and catalogues, it presents an inventory of autobiographical comics published on the Czech book market between 1990 and 2022. This inventory is supplemented by data from semi-structured interviews with Czech publishers, from online reader databases, public libraries, and media; the analysis of these sources is the starting point for a detailed description of the situation and position of francophone autobiographical comics on the Czech market. According to the data collected, francophone autobiographical comics account for approximately 20 % of the autobiographical comics offer in the Czech Republic, and Czech-published francophone autobiographical comics do not accurately reflect the diversity of this type of work abroad. Intertextuality as a creative process and possibilities of translation - Chloé Delaume's work in the Czech context

This MA thesis describes selected aspects of the intertextuality of a literary work as a problem of translation. The topic of intertextuality is presented in the context of a simulated translation order of a novel by the French author Chloé Delaume, Les Sorcières de la République (Seuil, 2016). The source text is analysed according to the principles of formal and thematic interpretants as described by L. Venuti. The thesis examines the issue of intertextuality in terms of the creative literary practices of quotation and imitation and considers the negative delimitation of translation with regard to the deforming translation tendencies described by A. Laurent Demoulin: Robinson. Translation of a Literary Debut of a Belgian Author and Introduction to the Czech Literary Scene

The aim of this thesis is to create a translation of selected chapters of the first novel by the Belgian author Laurent Demoulin called Robinson and to complement it with a study commenting on the problems of translation of the given text and describing the efforts to promote this novel for publication by a Czech publisher. In the first part of the thesis, the graduate will introduce the text - she will give basic information about the author, the title and the publisher, summarize critical responses and analyze the stylistic level of the text. The second part of the thesis presents the actual translation of selected chapters of the novel. The third part of the thesis will be devoted to this translation: the graduate will comment on the complicated passages, the chosen translation method and finally summarize the contribution of the editorial reading. Maryam Madjidi: Marx et la poupée. A thesis consisting of a translation of the book, supplemented by a study on the subject of French authors of Iranian origin and their contribution to French literature

The aim of this diploma thesis is to create a Czech translation of the first part of the novel Marx et la poupée by the Iranian-French author Maryam Madjidi and to complement it with a study that will introduce the issue of French authors of Iranian origin in a broader context. The first part of the thesis consists of a theoretical study that discusses in more detail the Iranian diaspora in France, the literary production of its members, as well as the reception of their works in the Czech Republic. The second part of the thesis presents the actual translation of the first part of the novel Marx et la poupée and the third part is devoted to a commentary on this translation, in which the author, the translated work, its characteristic features and selected translation problems will be presented in more detail. Samira Bellil: Dans l'enfer des tournantes - commented translation extended by analysis of translation complexities and reception of literature of the "beurs"

This master's thesis consists of a Czech language translation and commentary for selected chapters of Dans l'enfer des tournantes, an autobiography by Samira Bellil, a French author of Algerian descent. The commentary is divided into two parts: a presentation of literature written by French authors of Maghrebi descent, the so-called beurs, the language they use in literature and reception of their works; and an analysis of the source text and its reception, the problems encountered during the process of translation and their solutions as well as the chosen translation method. The bachelor thesis consists of two parts: the translation of 20 standardized pages of the chosen text Lidské pudy a emoce and its commentary. The part of the text that we decided to work on focuses on human emotions, their definition, typology and functions. The text also explains how to manipulate our emotions. Furthermore, the commentary consists of the translation analysis. We concentrate on lexical, syntactic, stylistic and textual characteristics of our source text. In addition to this, the commentary exposes the translation method. Finally the commentary concentrates on several specific translation problems encountered throughout the process. Pauline Delabroy-Allard - Ça raconte Sarah. Translation of a Literary Debut and Introduction of the Work of a Young French Author to the Czech Literary Scene

The aim of this master's thesis is to create a translation of the first half of the literary debut Ça raconte Sarah written by the French author Pauline Delabroy-Allard and to connect it with a study that provides a commentary on the translation of the novel itself, as well as on the process of introducing the literary work to the book market. The first part offers a presentation of the work Ça raconte Sarah - details about the original text, its author and publisher, critical reviews and stylistics. The second and crucial part presents the translation of the first half of the novel. The translation is followed by a commentary on the most complicated extracts and chosen translation technique. Jean-Claude Izzo - "Marseillais polar" in the Czech translations

This diploma thesis focuses on the most popular representative of the so-called "polar marseillais", which is Jean-Claude Izzo. The theoretical part briefly describes the development of the detective genre and the place of the detective novel in the framework of French literary production. It also deals with the position of the detective novel in the context of Czech literature and publishing. Secondly, Jean-Claude Izzo and his works will be presented in detail. Based on the information already presented, it will be possible to characterize the place of this author in connection to the French literary scene and to describe his function in the Czech environment. The main part of the work will be devoted to the translatological analysis and the critique of two Czech translations of Izzo's novels Totální chaos and Chourmo that together with Solea belong to his so-called 'Marseilles trilogy'.

Translating gastronomy: French Versions of Menus in Prague's Restaurants

The Master's thesis deals with the translatological aspects of multilingual menus in the context of Czech culture. The theoretical framework of the thesis offers several approaches to the topic: cultural, sociological, marketing, terminological and linguistic. Empirical research focuses on the Czech - French language-pair. The study maps online accessibility of French language menus in Prague's restaurants, compares their accessibility to those in other languages and analyses the quality of French translations. The crux of the study is an analysis of various strategies for translating Czech gastronomic terms into French, including adaptation, exoticization/naturalisation, and explication, among others. The analysis is based on Skopos theory and the pragmatics surrounding the supposed receiver of the final text. The study also concentrates on culturally specific terms (Czech specialties, French specialties, third country specialties) and the effect of non-native translators on the quality of the menu.
