Non-security of the Czech Army's soldiers on social networks
Kulhánek, Jan ; Ludvík, Jan (advisor) ; Kučera, Tomáš (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to examine the risk of the Czech Army not being properly secure on social networks, the behaviour of its uniformed members and their positive identification of social networking sites. The Russian aggression in the Ukraine and the hacking of Czech medical facilities have once again brought up the importance of cybersecurity and the role that it plays in the modern world, with the human factor being positively identified as the weakest link in security. This case study seeks to define the ideal types of soldier behaviour on social media and to analyse the potential risks that each type poses. To this end, this thesis first presents information necessary to fully understand the vast topic of cybersecurity on social media. Next, it defines several ideal types and their building blocks, in order to categorize the social media accounts of soldiers it later analyses. The author concludes that each defined ideal type has inherently problematic behaviours associated with it and carries with it a level of risk for the Army of the Czech Republic. However, the present user and family member ideal types were found to be the riskiest. Key words OSINT, SOCMINT, NATO, Czech Armed Forces, Cybersecurity, Security, Social media, Ideal type analysis, Social engineering Title The insecurity...
Perspectives on Resilience Against Radicalization in the Ranks: Personal Experiences of the U.S. Ex-Military Personnel
Dvoumetodová analýza, kombinující deduktivní a induktivní uvažování, poskytuje komplexní porozumění mechanismům odolnosti a strategiím používaným bývalým vojenským personálem s přihlédnutím k omezením, etickým aspektům. Empirická zjištění zdůrazňují dopad nasazení, význam vojenských vazeb a výzvy spojené s přechodem do civilního života. Práce zdůrazňuje potřebu diferencovaného zkoumání rizikových a ochranných faktorů specificky přizpůsobených vojenskému kontextu. Rovněž se...
Regional powers going abroad: Extra-regional geoeconomic strategies of India, Türkiye, and the EU in the Horn of Africa
Teufel, Adam ; Ludvík, Jan (advisor) ; Machold, Rhys (referee)
Since the end of the cold war, scholars have been debating the concept of geoeconomics as an alternative to geopolitics for an international system in which the significance of military power is supposedly superseded by economic power. However, while a clear definition and conceptualisation of geoeconomics continues to be absent, its relevance for global dynamics has become undeniable in the context of great power competition, and beyond. Whether called regional, middle, or emerging powers, countries like India or Türkiye are playing an increasingly important role, particularly in the economic domain, in which they leverage economic power for both political and economic gain. However, while much research and theoretic framework exist concerning regional powers' geoeconomic statecraft in their respective regions, their increasingly extra-regional engagement, although evident, remains under-conceptualised. This thesis will therefore assess the utility of a framework to analyse and characterise regional powers' extra-regional geoeconomic strategies. This thesis proposes the use of Wigell's (2016) ideal-type framework for regional powers' geoeconomic strategies to be compatible with the analysis of extra-regional engagement. Through a plausibility probe case study, it will give insight into the utility and...
Explaining European Military Integration: Theoretical Perspectives in Relation to the Building of a Common Defence
Pompilii, Matteo ; Rosa, Paolo (advisor) ; Ludvík, Jan (referee)
The present dissertation aims to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the process of European defence integration (EDI), utilising the theoretical perspectives of realism, neofunctionalism (NF), and liberal intergovernmentalism (LI). It seeks to evaluate the extent to which these perspectives shed light on the implementation of significant initiatives, specifically the Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO), the European Intervention Initiative (EI2), and the recent Strategic Compass (SC). To examine the mechanisms of European integration and disintegration within the realm of defence, this study employs theory-building and theory-testing methods, making use of scholarly literature, policy documents, official reports, and existing interviews. The results of the research show that realism is the theoretical framework that provides the most comprehensive elucidation for the activation of PESCO, EI2 and the SC, placing emphasis on the importance of external threats and security challenges. The neofunctionalist perspective posits that the integration process across different sectors, such as economics, holds the capacity to produce a spillover effect. However, the examination of the influence of economic integration on defence initiatives is intricate due to external factors such as the COVID-19...
Feminist vision(s) of peace in frozen conflict settings: the case study of Georgia
Minora, Chiara ; Kay, Rebecca (advisor) ; Ludvík, Jan (referee)
Feminist vision(s) of peace in frozen conflict settings: the case study of Georgia July 2023 Glasgow Student Number: 2704438m Trento Student Number: 233429 Charles Student Number: 16358708 Presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of International Master in Security, Intelligence and Strategic Studies Word Count: 20,064 Supervisor: prof. Rebecca Kay Date of Submission: 22/07/2023 Abstract Since the early stage of the Abkhaz-Georgian conflict in 1992, women's organisations have been active in providing humanitarian support and in pursuing reconciliation efforts between Georgians and Abkhazians. Thirty years after the beginning of the conflict and with official negotiations stalled, women's organisations have continued to operate, especially at the grassroots level. This research project seeks to understand the gender dynamics in the frozen conflict settings of Georgia and Abkhazia by looking at how the gendered impacts of the conflict influence women's engagement in peacebuilding. The peace efforts of women's organisations are examined from a gender lens to determine how gender is deployed and whether it affects the reconciliation activities between the parties. These initiatives are compared to feminist peace concepts, characteristics, and practices. In particular, the aim is to...
Death as a Strategic Tool: Analyzing the Effectiveness of Targeted Killings in the War in Afghanistan
Diaz, Michael Augustus ; Ludvík, Jan (advisor) ; Fitzgerald, James (referee)
of Dissertation Death as a Strategic Tool: Analyzing the Effectiveness of Targeted Killings in the War in Afghanistan University of Glasgow: 2704381D Dublin City University: 21109397 Charles University: 77557277 The War in Afghanistan conducted by the United States, with international allies, endured from 2001 to 2021 due to the intricacies of combating terrorist organizations, insurgent groups, and rebuilding the systems of government for the country. During this conflict, one of the most prominent tactics to combat terrorists and insurgents was targeted killings, which refers to when an individual is intentionally targeted by an air strike or a capture kill mission. However, this method of dealing with terrorist and insurgents in the War in Afghanistan is far from perfect. This research examines the efficacy of targeted killings using a mixed-methods approach by incorporating a correlation analysis of the phenomenon and detailed case studies of key targeted killing throughout the conflict. Overall, the practice is found to be relatively ineffective against preventing terrorist or insurgent activity in the long-term but somewhat effective in the short- term. However, the temporary benefits of targeted killings have to be properly exploited to make progress at the strategic level.
The Use of Hybrid Warfare to Achieve Strategic Objectives: Comparing Russian and Chinese Approaches
Sutil Toledano, Javier ; Kaczmarski, Marcin (advisor) ; Ludvík, Jan (referee)
The past few decades have seen the emergence of the concept of hybrid warfare. This term gained special attention after the Russian invasion of Crimea. Since then, Russia and China have been criticised for the use of such methods. To this day, the concept is still debated in the academic world. This study examines the use of hybrid methods to achieve strategic objectives by Russia and China. Both countries understand, in their own way, the benefits of using such methods, especially at the regional level, and use them to weaken their rivals and gain strategic advantages. Drawing on a corpus of academic literature, articles, reports, evaluations, and online news, this study shows that Russia and China use hybrid strategies in different ways and for different strategic purposes. Our analysis shows that while Russia uses hybrid tools to incite conflict and justify armed intervention to achieve its goals, China uses them subtly to avoid confrontation and gradually fulfil its objectives. This thesis concludes that the concept of hybrid warfare depends on the actors using it and that Russia and China have envisioned hybrid models that suit their needs. It also lays the groundwork for future research on the subject in more depth and provides a novel tactical-strategic framework that can be used and studied...
Russian Airpower in Ukraine: Analyzing the Performance of Russia's Aerospace Forces and its Implications for the Theory of Airpower
Ferruzzi, Carlo ; Ludvík, Jan (advisor) ; Ó Beacháin, Donnacha (referee)
2687344F - 47266728 Russian Airpower in Ukraine: Analyzing the Performance of Russia's Aerospace Forces and its Implications for the Theory of Airpower Abstract A heated debate emerged in the West regarding the reasons behind the seemingly underwhelming performance of Russian airpower in Ukraine. Yet although many experts in the field have advanced their own hypotheses, few have put their ideas to the test through empirical analysis and the scientific method. This essay aims to address this gap in the literature by using explaining- outcome process tracing to comprehensively reconstruct Russia's blitzkrieg strategy to conquer Ukraine and examine the performance of the VKS in the skies over Ukraine. The timeframe for the reconstruction of events spans from February 24th , 2022, the day Russia launched the invasion, to the end of March and early days of April 2022, when the so-called first phase of the war ended following Russia's retreat from the northern axis. By analyzing the evidence thus gathered, this essay then seeks to provide an explanation for why the VKS did not achieve air supremacy. More precisely, this essay concludes that the inability of the VKS to assert uncontestable control over Ukrainian airspace was the result of a nonlinear synergistic interaction of multiple factors: (1) the lack of...
Russia's information aggression before and during the full-scale invasion of Ukraine - identifying elements of change and continuity amongst the Kremlin's disinformation operations vis-à-vis EU's and NATO's courses of action to counter them

Unifying a Divided Nation: Exploring the Challenges and Prospects for Peaceful Korean Reunification
Mun, Hayeong ; Ludvík, Jan (advisor) ; Bujnoch, Louis (referee)
This research is prompted by recent findings highlighting a declining trend in support for reunification among South Koreans, which contradicts the conventionally prevailing narrative of reunification as both "our dream" and a "national duty." Whilst the question of what diminishes enthusiasm for reunification among South Koreans might seem self-evident-given Korea's over 70-year division and the disparate paths taken by the North and South- this research aims to provide a more in-depth diagnosis. It seeks to identify the social constructs that have developed within this prolonged division affecting South Koreans' perceptions of reunification. Employing a social constructivist lens, the study focuses on underexplored dilemmas specific to South Koreans in the context of intergroup relations and reunification. Grounded in Social Identity Theory and Integrated Threat Theory, the study formulates hypotheses relating to the interplay between South Koreans' perceived "otherness" towards North Koreans, intergroup threat perceptions, and attitudes towards reunification. Using the 2022 Reunification Consciousness Survey (N=1193) data from the Institute for Peace and Unification Studies (IPUS), this study runs statistical analysis through SPSS and Hayes' PROCESS Macro Model 4 to test the hypotheses. The...
