The generation of the second book of Cosmas' Chronicle: To the image of the reign of the sons of Břetislav I
Panocha, Marek ; Izdný, Jakub (advisor) ; Drška, Václav (referee)
This thesis will evaluate the image of the generation of the sons of Břetislav I. The focus of this thesis will be an attempt to analyse the perception of these five Premyslids, which is presented to us by the Chronicle of Bohemia by dean Kosma. At the same time it will attempt to summarize what can be inferred from other partial accounts, both by his contemporaries and from information of foreign provenance. In the subsequent analysis, it will attempt to define the position of these events in the context of the overall narrative of Czech history constructed by Kosma's Chronicle. An important part of this work will also be an analysis of the influence that this narrative may have had on the interpretations of the Bohemian-Polish royal title of Vratislaus II (I) in modern historical research.

Tomášek, Jan ; Žemlička, Josef (advisor) ; Klápště, Jan (referee) ; Izdný, Jakub (referee)
Submitted thesis deals with selected points from the development of the tribal society of the Polabian Slavs in the area called Slavic Polabia, i.e. the area between the Ore Mountains and the Lusatian Mountains in the south, rivers Elbe and Saale in the west, Baltic Sea in the north and river Oder in the east. The introduction defines the aims and methodology of the thesis, while also emphasizing the necessity to observe the diversity of each tribal societies, even in the context of the Slavic Polabia, which was supposed to be a home of the three big tribal societies or tribal confederations. Because of the differencies in the socio-political development of these three tribal confederations, the first chapter introduced its own proposition of periodization of the Polabian Slavs' history. This proposition is not based on the traditional criteria used by the older and contemporary medieval studies relying on the external factors, level of social differentiation or structural changes in the political system. The proposed periodization set a few development phases, which each of the tribal societies either passed or never reached. In its three parts (head,...

Using a diachronic approach, it examines the ways in which the Rule of Benedicti was spread in the Frankish Empire during the reign of Charlemagne and its legal anchoring during the reign of his son Louis I. the Pious. The work further analyzes the hagiographic biography of Benedict of Aniane with a view to examining its significance in the uniformization efforts of the ruling dynasty. The monastic provisions of the imperial synods from 816 and 817 are compared with the original wording of the Benedictine Rule and in relation to this, the work points to new monastic tendencies which deviate from the original Benedictine tradition. The first chapter presents an initial insight into the topic of the monastic reform of the Karlovac dynasty and points out the methods and causes of the gradual penetration of the Rule of Benedict of Nursia into the Frankish monasteries. The next chapter uses a biographical method to approach the person of Abbot Benedict of Aniane and his role in the reform of monasticism. The final part of the work analyzes the synodial chapters dealing with the issue of the implementation of the Benedictine rule in the monasteries of the Frankish Empire. It analyzes the...
Kingdom of the Visigoths: Terms and Aspects of Takeover of the Royal Power
Mestek, Oto ; Drška, Václav (advisor) ; Izdný, Jakub (referee)
Gothic tribes settled on the lower Danube and on the northern shore of the Black Sea entered in the year 376 the territory of the Roman Empire. This was followed by fierce fighting and migration of the Goths, who passed through the Balkans and Italy and reached Aquitaine in 413, where they settled temporarily. Here, originally various Gothic groups were formed into the one tribe gens, which we now call Visigoths. The pressure of the Franks from the north forced the Visigoths to leave Aquitaine at the beginning of the 6th century and move on to the Iberian Peninsula. Here the Visigoths established their own Kingdom of Toledo. Because the Visigoths at the time of their formation were not a homogeneous group, but rather a lose conglomerate of various barbarian groups and military units, they had no tradition of appointing their rulers. For this reason, they created the mechanism of the royal elections. Vallia was the first elected king in 415. During Visigothic history, a sequence of elected kings was disrupted several times by attempts of some kings to enforce a hereditary monarchy. This led in 633 to the enactment of the royal elections at the 4th Council of Toledo. Other ecclesiastical councils further improved the principles of election. The work will focus on the development of the Visigothic...
