Speech Acts Performed by Information Technology Students in Online Debates

This bachelor’s thesis aims to frame the concept of speech acts and discuss issues related to their interactional aspects in argumentative discussions. The theoretical part of the thesis is written in the style of a literature review, beginning with an explanation of basic terminology of speech acts and defining the illocutionary force and its indicators. It also provides a detailed comparison of three different approaches to the analysis of speech acts and describes their roles using the model of a critical discussion. The analytical part of the thesis focuses on the practical application of the theoretical concepts. It defines the rules of online debates, describes their phases and provides an analysis of boosters and hedges and speech acts based on transcripts of the debates. The results of the analysis are displayed in tables, supplemented with illustrative examples and then discussed.

In this Bachelor’s thesis commented translation is provided. The chosen book is called “Practical schemas and circuits in Electrotechnics 1” by Štěpán Berka. In my opinion, the analysis of the translation helps to understand the principles and the main problems that can appear during the translation process. This thesis tries to explain the nature of the translation of the book written in popular scientific style.

The aim of this bachelor’s thesis is to translate a scientific text and then comment on the various changes and modification it had to undergo in order to attain the approach on the transmission of information as well as the transmitted information itself. Several linguistic viewpoints were implemented, both syntactical and lexical, and the field of “Czenglish” is discussed, a linguistic field closely associated with scientific translations. Additionally, a brief theoretical introduction concerning forms of scientific texts and their properties is included.

English as a Lingua Franca in IT Advertising Campaigns

In the 21st century, we can undoubtedly speak about a significant growth in the number of people who either use English on a daily basis or learn it intensively. English has become a global language of science, technology, education and business. As a main tool for communication, English has been granted the status of a Lingua Franca (ELF). Used by the representatives of various cultures, English has developed into a supranational language which has implemented authentic characteristics of different languages and cultures. Although ELF research is still considered to be in its initial phase, I will endeavor to identify specific features of ELF in IT advertising campaigns, using press releases of leading international IT corporations.

Comparative analysis of professional texts

This Bachelor´s thesis analyzes three technical texts from the field of electrical engineering. The first text chosen for this analysis is an academic textbook, the second is a technical research article, and the third is a technical lecture. All texts explain the topic of operational amplifiers. This thesis comments on the presented genres and their characteristics; however, its main focus is the analysis of cohesive chains. Types of grammatical and lexical cohesion are analyzed as well as the use of the keywords in the cohesive chains. The items of the identified cohesive chains are integrated in tables and their function in the discourse is commented on. The percentage occurrence of the individual categories of cohesion is calculated and it is implied that lexical cohesion prevails over grammatical. Some interesting distinctions arise from the comparison of the texts and the cohesive devices forming the cohesive chains.

This bachelor thesis focuses on metaphor as a linguistic phenomenon and its use in various types of texts dealing with transistors, including popularization news articles, online tutorials, textbooks, and research articles. The aim is to map the occurrence and function of metaphorical expressions used in engineering discourse, and to classify them in terms of conceptual metaphors. The thesis also includes a comparison of the texts with respect to the phenomena under investigation.

The main topic of the work are modern high power semiconductor devices. Emerging wide-band-gap materials and their electrical characteristics are also discussed. The work is then focused on these modern devices, including their basics, application and availability on the market. Furthermore, the work presents the tables of the devices offered by the European leading semiconductor manufacturers.

This bachelor thesis deals with humanoid robots. It describes characteristic features and historical development of humanoid robots, including the latest progress in their simulation, modelling and programming. The advantages and disadvantages of humanoid robots including their impact on our society are discussed as well, continuing with survey that investigates public opinion on this topic and interpretation of results as a practical part.

Commented translation of a teaching material for electrical engineering

This bachelor thesis deals with the translation of a teaching material for electrical engineering with the aim of translating and analysing a technical text. The translated material will be then used for teaching in technical classes that focus on analog technology. The thesis has two parts. The practical part presents a chapter taken from the material and translated from Czech into English. The analytical part provides an analysis of the translated text along with examples. The analysis mainly focuses on the similarities and differences in conveying information between the original Czech text and English translation of the text.
