Public Libraries as Mediators of Electronic Resources of Cultural Heritage

The thesis focuses on the mediation of electronic information resources of cultural heritage from public libraries to public. The text is divided into two parts - theoretical and practical. Introductory chapters explain key terms - cultural heritage, digitization of analog cultural object and digital library and describe chosen benefits that providing of electronic information resources of cultural heritage brings to public libraries. The thesis also includes analysis of chosen electronic information resources of cultural heritage. They are presented Manuscriptorium, Kramerius, Moll Collection, online portal Europeana and web site of American Memory project. The practical part of this thesis presents the results of a supply and demand survey. The first survey was implemented on web pages of Czech regional libraries and the second survey is user survey among the Czech public. The last chapter is formed by recommendations for public libraries which offer electronic resources of cultural heritage.
Presentation of Library Services to the Public : Analysis of Current Situation in the Netherlands and Czech Republic

The aim of this thesis is to compare the actual presentation and communication of library services to the public in the Dutch and Czech public libraries. Monitored were primarily legislative frameworks of mentioned countries, branch organizations and their marketing activities supporting public libraries. Theoretical knowledge was supplemented by practical findings gained during the study tour undertaken in the Netherlands. During this study tour were identified specific methods of promotion of public library services. Thesis explores these methods and outlines the possibility inspiration from Dutch library practice. The work proposes an innovation of Czech public library services using the retail concept as part of the open access collections, which was observed and verified in the Netherlands. The final comparison of selected factors on the national level provides a brief overview of librarianship in both countries.
Community functions of public libraries as one means of getting potential readers

Purpose of this thesis is to chart the area of community activities. The first part is theoretical. Main focus is on introduction into basic terms, and description of providing community services to the public, especially with regard to specific needs of target groups. Also promotional tools are given a brief part, as well as community activities realised abroad; following by specific examples of community activities of selected public libraries in region of Central Bohemia. The final part of the thesis analyses results of questionnaire focused on community activities provided by public libraries of Central Bohemia region as perceived not only by users, but also library staff. Service Design in Public Libraries

This thesis deals with service design in public libraries. The theses consists of a theoretical part and a practical part. The theoretical part describes the services in public libraries. Then basics and principles of design services are introduced. This is followed by an overview of service design tools and methods suitable for use in libraries. The practical part analyzes services of the Matěj Josef Sychra Library from a user perspective, using tools and methods of service design and some possible improvements of these services are suggested.
Bibliotherapy in the environment of public libraries

This thesis aims to introduce the notion of bibliotherapy and its application in public library environment. The text is divided into two parts - theoretical and practical. In the theoretical part, the notion of bibliotherapy itself is introduced, together with questions of who is engaged in this field, as well as the effects of reading. There are presented several book titles which belong to bibliotherapeutic literature. The substantial part of the thesis is then built on specific examples of bibliotherapy practiced in public libraries in the Czech Republic, as well as abroad. The practical part features first an interview with Mrs Marcela Kořínková who actively engages in bibliotherapy; second, there is a proposal of implementation of a bibliotherapeutic department in an imaginary public library, and last, there is a research presenting the wide public's awareness of, and interest in the field of bibliotherapy.
The support of the childrens' reading in the Czech Republic and German speaking countries

The diploma thesis concentrates on the children's reading issues, and compares the approach to its support in the Czech Republic and the German speaking countries. The introductory part is devoted to the current children's reading, the factors that influence it, and reading interests of today's children. It also evaluates the contemporary Czech children's literature and its publishers. The following two chapters describe the activities for the children's reading support that are developed by Czech libraries and non-librarian entities. The next part introduces the projects for the children's reading support implemented in Austria and Germany; it also shortly describes the programs of other German speaking countries. The sixth chapter briefly outlines the subject matter of the children's reading support in both Czech and foreign media. There are two surveys attached to the thesis. The first compares the activities of selected Czech and foreign libraries, and their contribution to the children's reading support. The second survey, implemented among the children readers of the Central Library of the Municipal Library in Prague, evaluates the children's satisfaction with the offered thematic discussions for the school classes. Newspapers in public libraries

The goal of this bachelor thesis is to find out how the activities concerning daily press go in five selected public libraries. In opening chapter the examined branch is delineated by definitions of used terms, previous adaptations of this topic are summarized, and methodology of research based on interview and surveys is introduced. Hypotheses are expressed in the last part of this chapter. In the second chapter all the Czech national daily press is characterized and their internet activities are documented. If those titles have an electronic version, it's functionality is examined in this part of thesis. Chapters 3 and 4 present results of research which was done at five libraries of various sizes.The third chapter presents selected libraries and it describes the workflow of purchasing the press in those organizations with a special emphasis on the process of choosing the material. In the fourth chapter the preferences of readers in selected libraries and the intensity of their interest over time are examined. This part of dissertation also includes analysis of other activities concerning press such as cataloguing and displacing journals. Third and Fourth chapter are closed with summarization of detected facts. In the conclusion assigned hypotheses are confirmed or disconfirmed.
The Internet in public libraries

(anglicky) The bachelor thesis deals with the issue of internet usage in public libraries. The bachelor thesis describes the following topics. Firstly, it describes the definition of the term "Internet" and its overall history and development. The second chapter deals mainly with legislative measures of providing access to information and the functioning of public libraries from domestic and foreign terms. Further work is devoted to projects internetisation, which took place in the Czech public libraries. The penultimate part of the work deals with the Internet services that libraries provide to its users and the future of the Internet in the libraries of the Czech Republic. The last part includes the evaluation of survey that was focused on the Internet usage in public libraries.

(in English) Diploma thesis "Municipal library in Odolena Voda as an information a cultural centre : Project" suggests possibilities of changes and expansion of library services provided by the Municipal library in Odolena Voda and suggests other activities so that it becomes in the future a modern information and cultural centre of Odolena Voda . The author briefly describes the history and current status of Odolena Voda. Services and programs of public libraries in the Czech Republic aimed at immigrants and national minorities

The objective of the thesis is to describe and evaluate services of public libraries aimed at immigrants and national minorities in the Czech Republic and programs to support them. The first part defines the principal terms related to libraries and minorities. An overview of legislation follows, focused on the same topic. The third part introduces five most common national minorities and immigrant groups living in the Czech Republic. The fourth chapter describes all regional libraries in the Czech Republic, two of municipal libraries near the national border where the percentage of minorities is higher and one specialized library with a focus on their foreign- language equipment, events, meetings or exhibitions about or for national minorities or immigrants, their cooperation with various organizations, employees' interest in minorities and a possibility of registration of foreigners at libraries. Following part is about programs and projects supporting foreigners in Czech libraries. The sixth chapter describes selected organizations working in the migration field.
