Analysis of European Policy as European Identitty in Time
Plešr, Dominik ; Balon, Jan (advisor) ; Honová, Petra Alexandra (referee)
The aim of this thesis was to answer the Question Could we find something in European policy, what should to be the European identity?, through systematic research. Author decided for the mode of research on the basis of the studied literature and last international studies of this theme - thus to find european identity in european policy, not to describe a history of collocation "European identity". According to characteristic of terms "policy" and "identity, author analyses, whatever and how European identity express in European policy, by historic analysis, by analysis of documents - treaties of the European Union and foregoing organisations -, and by analysis of the overview of statistic data - Eurobarometer research. Historic analysis expressed different concepts of european identity - christianity, contradiction with islam, colonialism, science (like an ideology), rule of the law (particularly citizen's law and international law), man - sophist -, than analysis of documents of the Union -representative democracy, liberty, peace, security, human rights, rule of the law, and values, from which these emerged. Moreless, both of the groups of the concepts do not resist each other, because of we can include the concepts from historic analysis to collocation from treaties "…and values, from which...
Erasmus as a means of strengthening European identity: case study of the Czech Republic
Černý, Tomáš ; Kasáková, Zuzana (advisor) ; Rovná, Lenka (referee)
This paper deals with the question as to whether there is a correlation between an Erasmus sojourn and European identity. It is assumed by many EU politicians that through the experience of studying and living in another European country, students develop a feeling of community with other Europeans. In spite of such believes, there is lack of conclusive empirical evidence, as some authors argue Erasmus is an effective instrument for promoting European identity, while others do not. Moreover, the effect of an Erasmus stay seems to be affected by factors such as host country and nationality. By analyzing a quantitative survey carried out with Czech Erasmus students, this thesis suggests that, while dependent on various variables, Erasmus can bring about a positive change within European identity.
Long-term changes in the precipitation phase in Europe
Hynčica, Martin ; Huth, Radan (advisor) ; Jeníček, Michal (referee)
This diploma thesis is concerned with long-term changes in precipitation phase in Europe since 1961 to 2004. Precipitation phase is described by the ratio of snow to total precipitation (S/P) between November and April. The first part is engaged in changes in precipitation phase in the Czech Republic. The S/P ratio in the Czech Republic is decreasing (not significantly) by 0,19%/year. In the second part are used temperature and precipitation data from 10 Czech meteorological stations to determine the threshold temperature. This threshold temperature is 1,1řC (daily average temperature) and is used as indicator of precipitation phase. If there is a daily temperature higher than the threshold temperature, daily precipitation sum is signed as rain and vica versa. This threshold temperature is afterwards applied to temperature and precipitation data at 148 European stations and there is also found out relation between S/P ratios and indexes of 4 the most important teleconnections in Europe. It is shown that long-term trend of S/P ratio is negative and significant, however regionally different. There is a southwest - northeast gradient and the biggest decline is recorded in the central Europe and adjacent areas of Scandinavian Peninsula, but the decline of S/P ratio is slowing toward northwest Russia....
Comparative analysis of avoidable mortality in selected European countries during 1980-2010
Pražák, Michal ; Burcin, Boris (advisor) ; Hulíková Tesárková, Klára (referee)
The main objective of the thesis is the evaluation of the development of avoidable mortality in selected European countries during 1980-2010 with emphasis on comparison of East and West. Concept of avoidable mortality was established to measure the effectiveness of the health care system in 70s of the past century. The main results of the thesis indicate different development of avoidable mortality during 80s in both parts of Europe. Inefficient medical care and inappropriate health policy in formal Eastern Bloc contributed to divergent trends of avoidable mortality in Europe. Different trends of mortality were observed in East European countries especially during the transformation process. The importance of selection of avoidable causes and age limits was confirmed. Childlessness and its aspects in selected European countries
Žemberová, Karolína ; Rychtaříková, Jitka (advisor) ; Šustová, Šárka (referee)
This thesis addresses childlessness and its aspects in selected European countries: Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Estonia, the Netherlands, Sweden and Norway. The aim of this work is to discover whether there are differences between capitalist and post-socialist countries when it comes to the development of childlessness and fertility. The tools are: the analysis of fertility, the average age of mothers at childbirth and analysis of childlessness using both transversal and longitudinal indicators. The indicators used in the analysis were of the first and second category. Another aim of this thesis is to find out whether there are differences between the attitudes, opinions and values when it comes to approach to the family, the division of gender roles and children between childless respondents and respondents with children. The differentiation between sex and age groups through the use of three matrices with questions from three surveys (European Values Study, Eurobarometer and ISSP) are also investigated. The factor analysis and the method of principal components are used to reduce the number of variables. The results of the factor analysis are indexed and the indexes are then used to reveal how the differences manifest themselves in the monitored groups of respondents. The main result of...
Self presentation of elites in the iron age
Lorencová, Kateřina ; Frank Danielisová, Alžběta (advisor) ; Kysela, Jan (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with the ways of expression of social elites in the early Iron Age Hallstatt culture. The aim is to capture interpretable elements of the lifestyle of the Hallstatt society by means of soci-political models used in archaeology and to outline the current state of research the political and cultural character of these entities. Part of the work deals with the archeological record testifying abou t the existence of the higher social class - as e.g. rich barrow burials, luxurious imported goods and fortified hill-top sites known as "Fürstensitze".
Pastoral Care by Jan Patočka
Tesař, Tomáš ; Karfíková, Lenka (advisor) ; Kranát, Jan (referee)
This thesis focuses on the key question of Patocka"s thinking - care of the soul. In Patocka"s texts it represents the difference between life based on opinions accepted without critical thinking or practical decisions, called naive life, and life based on critical examining. In my opinion, this dichotomy between the two "ways of life" makes some kind of backbone of Patocka"s Plato and Socrates interpretations in his postwar lectures. The philosopher in Patocka"s texts is Socrates. He first reveals the soul as "the most inherent nature of man", that needs to be taken care of. Aware of this Patocka approaches two other great Greek philosophers - Plato and Aristotle as well as the periods of Christianity, Renaissance and Enlightenment. This on the one hand means certain degree of adoption of Socrates" "care of the soul" but on the other hand falling away from it. In the time of Renaissance and especially during Enlightenment a new spiritual style "care of the world" is being born. This leads, according to Patocka, to such kind of understanding the being, that definite abandonment of Socrates" "care of the soul" follows, and the fixed essence of man is in jeopardy. The final part of our thesis introduces Patocka"s noteworthy idea of a victim. Only being a victim brings the genuine freedom of man, who is then...
The Golden Age of Martial Arts of Europe
Šlapák, Vojtěch ; Čechura, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Beneš, Zdeněk (referee)
The goal of this thesis is to depict the golden era of European martial arts, which I consider to have developed in the "long" sixteenth century. This century is probably the most diverse one in European history in terms of weaponsused and fighting stylesintroduced. It was permeated by the fading phenomenon of chivalry, which last showed up in its full glory. Also, it is the age of mercenaries gloriously mastering the battlefields with their often dishonest, though effective tactics. But early modernperiod was anera of another victory, too. It was the beginning of a new type of warrior. Old medieval fencing was overcome by nimble styles arriving from Mediterranean area. The journey of these technical styles was one full of Renaissance spontaneity but also blood from thousands of duels. In Czech lands, this turning pointis already chronicledintheera of Rudolph II., which was a haven for various arts. Key words: Boxing - Cord - Duel - Europe - Fencing - Giacomo di Grassi - Knight - Mercenary - Nicolaes Petter - Pankration - Renaissance - Salvatore Fabris - Sword - Swordplay - Swordsman - Talhofer - Weapons - Wrestling
Postmodern image of the world by Peter Sloterdijk
Vodička, Bohumil ; Hauser, Michael (advisor) ; Rybák, David (referee)
7 The abstract I consider the works of Peter Sloterdijk in my thesis. I concentrate to Sloterdijk's way of understanding of the topic cynicism in the relationship to kynicism. At first I try to describe the topic cynicism which I consider as very important to understand Sloterdijk's way of understanding of the European history in the book Falls Europa erwacht. I try to explain, how the cynicism influences various parts of life, I consider particularly the military cynicism and the cynicism of power. I consider the political and philosophical vision of Europe in the second part of the thesis because the history of Europe and its state nowadays was influenced by the cynicism very strongly. I try to explain Sloterdijk's imagination of the way out from this situation.
Abundance trends and range dynamics in European bats.
Žabková, Klára ; Horáček, Ivan (advisor) ; Lučan, Radek (referee)
Bachelor thesis sumarizes available data about bat abundance in middle Europe, especially in the Czech republic. Populations of bats are usually dynamic, which is given by their high sensitivity to environmental changes. Many of these changes are man made, for instance landscape management, agricultural intensification or disturbing bats during hibernation. Impact of global warming on bat abundance and range distribution is also discussed, because it could explain the occurance of mediterranean species Hypsugo savii in Moravia In my thesis, I focus on possible causes of strong population decrease of Rhinolophus hipposideros in 70's in the middle Europe, which led to establishement of monitoring programms accross Europe. Project "Monitoring bats in underground hibernacula" has started in Czechoslovakia in 1969, and it has provided valuable and relevant data. I also compare methods for monitoring bats, because there isn't any effective universal method for censusing all species under all circumstances, due to their specific behavioral habits. Counting bats in underground hibernacula appears to be the most efficient, especially for species such as Rhinolophus hipposideros, Myotis myotis and Plecotus spp. Statistic methods are used to estimate colony size, Lincoln-Peterson method seems to be the most suitable...
