Reportage photography and its informative value
Gorcovská, Laura ; Černý, Vladimír (advisor) ; Váša, Ondřej (referee)
Our thesis is dealing with case of reportage photography and medial sharing of our choosen visual image. We have choosen an image of syrian refugee Aylan Kurdi from 2015, whose photo is refering the problem of refugee crisis in Europe. The thesis is focused on semiotic approach of selected photographies, which are showing the same picture from different perspectives. In our case is perspective very important part of thesis, because these photographies are very questionable on ehtical principes. Therefore, we are also focused on the way, how the media deal with this issue. Our thesis points the signs of reportage photography and also monitor their changes, which depends on the medium, title, perex and composition of words completing photography. We are also focused on contextual framework of photography in choosen media. The secondary objective of our thesis is the comparision of results of analysis of selected picture published in individual selected media and comparision of differences in interpretation and photography context. Thesis is primaly based on theoretical concepts of Roland Bathers on specific visual sharing of selected media. Monitored indicators are the concepts of denotation, conotation and myth, while we are focused on connection between text and image and interpretation in selected...
Philosophy of Art and Mass Culture in Thinking of T. W. Adorno, W. Benjamin and H.-G. Gadamer
Horneková, Šárka ; Novák, Aleš (advisor) ; Váša, Ondřej (referee)
The work brings critical and philosophical perspective on the issue of art and mass culture in contemporary society. Relying on H.-G. Gadamer's, T. W. Adorno's and Walter Benjamin's ideas. The work performs a summary of their thoughts, focusing on art as an example of humanities- scientific investigation in the case of H.-G. Gadamer, the criticism of the cultural industry and its vital role in the thinking of T. W Adorno and the issue of technical reproducibility of works of art in a Walter Benjamin's essay. The work focuses on the present social functions of mass culture, its internal structure, on the issue of its quality, taking into account the extent to which this appears to be useful. The Transformation of Karlin in the context of Marc Auge's theory of non-places
Šmídová, Markéta ; Váša, Ondřej (advisor) ; Marcelli, Miroslav (referee)
This thesis deals with the most dynamically evolving Prague district Karlin. In the context of the theory of Marc Augé about non-places, it primarily addresses the transformation of Karlin after the floods in 2002 and its consequences. For easier orientation in this area it is at first outlined the theory of Marc Augé and the history of Karlin. It is followed by the practical part, which refers to the production of non- places. Against the backdrop of the industrial heritage it refers to the conversion of industrial buildings and the creation of new administrative centers that show signs of non-places. Construction of new office centers started the process of new development of Karlin. The nature of this process and the direction Karlin is moving , is presented with concrete examples. I note in particular the changes in the structure of newly opened businesses - shops and catering facilities . In the last part of the thesis I mention the typical expression of non-place in Karlin - the underground and its surroundings. The aim is to point out that the conversion of Karlin relates to the production of non- places. Keywords : conversion, industrial buildings, Karlin, Marc Augé, non-places, office buildings, office centers, underground.
Controversy of visual image in public space on an example of Lennon's Wall in Prague (From the perspective of power distribution, destruction and communication)
Kotrlá, Jitka ; Hájek, Václav (advisor) ; Váša, Ondřej (referee)
The following diploma thesis deals with image destruction in the public space, specifically focuses on its selected fragments, which can be considered as communication messages. The work provides a synchronous and diachronic analysis of the subject of the research as well as the transformation of its statuses, thus concentrating on the acquisition, transformation and extinction of the symbolic meanings of the object within the cultural- historical complex. The pattern of destruction of the image in the public space is chosen as Lennon's Wall in Prague, whose constant visual and meaningful transformation is taking place today - against the backdrop of the historical, power and cultural context. The theoretical basis is based on the analysis of change based on the concept of "discourse" and "discourse formation" by Michel Foucault, as well as on the anchoring of methodology in CDA Norman Fairclough and DHA Ruth Wodak. Keywords Visual Image in Public Space, Lennon's Wall, Linking, Discourse, Destruction, Communication, Power.
Contemporary Diet Culture in the light of Michel Foucault's Analyses
Muratova, Polina ; Váša, Ondřej (advisor) ; Švantner, Martin (referee)
(in English) Nowadays various formerly silenced topics have appeared under the spotlight of public's attention: specifically, mental health awareness has put forward body image concerns as being an incentive for most lethal forms of mental distress such as eating disorders. Despite body image issues are the subject of research for various academic fields, mainly psychology, this thesis attempts to study body image from a different point of view. That is in relation to contemporary diet culture; the thesis focuses on the application of Michel Foucault's theoretical concepts of disciplinary power and "care of the self" practice on the contemporary diet culture. Hence, discovery and review of diet culture controlling mechanisms that might be later internalized by individuals will be in the scope of this work, alongside with the study of diet culture discourse reinforced by influential YouTube content creators. Mainly, the thesis is focused on how dietary practices refer to disciplinary practices, conceptualized by Foucault, while, simultaneously, act as enabling for the subject, mimicking Foucauldian "care of the self" practices. Key words: Michel Foucault, diet, diet culture, care of the self, eating disorder, self- transformation.
The Symbolical Construction of the Enemy in the Alfonso X of Castile and Niketas Choniates' Works
De Pablo Aguilar, David Alejandro ; Švantner, Martin (advisor) ; Váša, Ondřej (referee)
Abstract. Both the chronicle, Niketas Koniates', titled Historia, as well as the two Alphonsine chronicles, General Estoria and Primera Cronica General, were created at crucial moments in Byzantine and Castilian history respectively. their authors were not only known for their writing and knowledge, but for actively participating in the games of power in both regions. In the Byzantine case, the end of the 12th century brought a convulsive change of dynasty, from the Komnenos to the Agelos, and the dramatic events of the Fourth Crusade, which ended with the taking of Constantinople by the Crusader armies. On the side, the Kingdom of Castile consolidated the kingdom as the most powerful in the peninsula controlling or conquering the Muslim territories, after the great victory in the battle of Las Navas de Tolosa. This complexity of the historical context and the role of the authors made that the encounter with the enemy and the symbolic representation of these were inevitable both in daily life and in these historical discourses. Thus, in concrete terms, this thesis focuses on analysing the differences and similarities of the representations of the enemies regarding their bodies, sexuality and moral behaviour. In addition to this, analysing the text and the context, the research seeks to deepen into the...
Stability of nonnormal problems
Váša, Ondřej ; Kaplický, Petr (advisor) ; Pražák, Dalibor (referee)
The goal of this thesis was to examine global behaviour of solutions of a particular non-linear system of ordinary differential equations. Firstly, we focused on the basic properties of solutions, i.e., existence, uniqueness and the domain of maximal solutions. Further we found equilibria and by using known theorems we discussed their stability and types. Then we proved the existence of a positively invariant set containing origin which allowed us to examine global behaviour of solutions of the given system. By using the stable and unstable manifold theorem and by repetitive usage of appropriate theorems from the Poincaré-Bendixson theory we analyzed the manifolds completely. Obtained results allowed us to characterize global behaviour of an arbitrary solution. We showed that stable manifolds of unstable equilibria divide plane into three sets in such way that each set is a global attractor of a particular equilibrium. 1
