The aim of this bachelor thesis is to create a functionally equivalent translation of the selected chapters of the book Anne-Sophie Mutter. Die Schönheit des Violinklanges, written by the German author Alfred Stenger. The thesis is divided into five parts. The first one is of a practical nature. It consists of a German-Czech translation. The remaining four parts are of a theoretical nature, i.e. a commentary. The second part presents a translation analysis based on the model of Christiane Nord from her book Textanalyse und Übersetzen. The next one focuses on a description of the used translation method and procedures. The fourth part deals with a typology of translation problems at different levels. The last part sums up translation shifts that occurred during the translation process.

Implementing Machine Translation in an SME

The thesis deals with the topic of implementation of machine translation (MT) in an SME with an emphasis on legal translation. The theoretical part brings together the existing research relevant for this topic, focusing in particular on the specifics of MT between Czech and English, the task of post-editing (PEMT), including the skills and competences required from post-editors, recommendations for, and experience with, MT implementation, MT evaluation, PEMT productivity and translator attitudes towards MT. In its empirical part, the thesis draws on a case study of MT implementation in a Czech language service provider (LSP), with a focus on selecting a suitable MT tool and incorporating it in the workflow. Furthermore, an experiment is performed with professional translators, aimed at measuring productivity of translation and post-editing in terms of the time spent in the respective tasks and analysing and comparing selected aspects of the output produced by the translators and post-editors participating in the experiment. The analytical model employed is an error-based human evaluation model. Lastly, a questionnaire is used to ascertain the experience of translators/post-editors with MT and their attitudes towards this technology. The Relationship of Translation Studies and Translation Didactics

The present dissertation explores the relationship between Translation Studies and translation didactics at theoretical level and as reflected in the teaching practice at selected Czech educational institutions. The dissertation, theoretical-analytical in its orientation, first seeks to define its key terms, profession, didactics, education and training, Translation Studies and translation theory, conducting cross-linguistic comparisons and outlining the past and present thinking about these concepts. Two typologies of translator training are offered, one based on education objectives, the other differentiating between diverse teaching contexts. A special chapter introduces translation didactics as a dynamic component of Translation Studies, discussing current trends in education research and outlining the institutionalization of translator training. Our attempt at defining the content of, and relationship between, Translation Studies and translation theory, the central concepts of the present work, suggested terminological and conceptual disagreement. Visual odometry from omnidirectional camera

We present a system that estimates the motion of a robot relying solely on images from onboard omnidirectional camera (visual odometry). Compared to other visual odometry hardware, ours is unusual in utilizing high resolution, low frame-rate (1 to 3 Hz) omnidirectional camera mounted on a robot that is propelled using continuous tracks. We focus on high precision estimates in scenes, where objects are far away from the camera. This is achieved by utilizing omnidirectional camera that is able to stabilize the motion estimates between camera frames that are known to be ill-conditioned for narrow field of view cameras. We employ feature based-approach for estimation camera motion. Given our hardware, possibly high ammounts of camera rotation between frames can occur. Thus we use techniques of feature matching rather than feature tracking.

Some Syntactic Phenomena Related to Computer-Aided Translation from German into Czech

The thesis looks at computer-aided translation (CAT), which, along with machine translation (MT), stands for the use of information technology in translation, but, unlike MT, is not of primary concern for Translation Studies research. Based on the current state of research, this thesis aims to address the syntax of CAT text output. The theoretical part first describes the working principles of CAT tools and presents them in the context of general translation studies, then defines information structure and endophoric reference as the syntactic phenomena to be analysed. Finally it provides a methodological model for the empirical part. Using a set of texts translated with CAT tools and a set of texts translated without them, the empirical part seeks to check whether translators using CAT tools tend to shift from the syntagmatic approach to text to a more paradigmatic one. To this end, an analysis is carried out to determine the interference rate in the information structure of the target texts as well as the rate of subjectively motivated shifts in distant endophoric reference. The Perception of the Translating and Interpreting Profession in the Czech Republic

This thesis focuses on the subjective perception of the translating and interpreting profession among Czech translators and interpreters, students of translation studies at the Institute of Translation Studies at the Faculty of Arts at Charles University in Prague, and the Czech general public. The thesis is comprised of two parts, theoretical and empirical. The theoretical part characterizes the translating and interpreting profession and describes the knowledge, abilities and skills needed to practice both professions. This part also provides a description of all factors determining the perception of the status of both professions and the factors that have an impact on the real status of translators and interpreters in society. This is followed by a description of the Czech environment and its possible influence on the status and working conditions of translators and interpreters in the Czech Republic. These descriptions serve as a basis for the empirical part of this thesis, which aims to compare, using the questionnaire survey method, the perception of both professions among translators and interpreters themselves, students of translation studies and the Czech general public, and to ascertain the general public's knowledge of both professions. The thesis deals with the translation of three articles from German magazine art - Das Kunstmagazin and their commentary. The aim is to develop such translations that could be published in adequate scientific Czech magazine which deals with current world's art ambient. The thesis consists of two major parts: the translation itself and a commentary based on contrast comparison of Czech and German languages. The comparison implements grammatical, lexical and syntax aspects. The commentary reflects translational problems and strategies as were defined by Jiří Levý. The commentary is also based on translational analysis of extratextual and intratextual factors by Christiane Nord. Thesis exceptionally focuses on frequent anglicisms, composites, as well as phraseologisms and metaphors in the text and their functioning in the original language and the language of the translation.
