In the subsequent part of the dissertation focus lies on intercultural education, the key aim of which is defined as development of intercultural communicative competence. Current trends in intercultural education are discussed with accent on the specifics of English language teaching and learning. The core of the theoretical part of this work aims to conceptualize the construct of intercultural communicative competence and to elaborate on its consequent didactic aspects, i.e. its development and assessment. The empirical study includes two phases: first phase aims to capture the...

TITLE: Classroom Communication and Communicative Language Teaching: Using Audio Recordings of Teachers' Own Lessons in English Language Teacher Education AUTHOR: PaedDr. Dana Hánková STUDY PROGRAMME: Pedagogy SUPERVISOR: Prof. PhDr Karel Rýdl, CSc. ABSTRACT: The dissertation thesis deals with the development of language teaching and classroom communication competence of English teachers for adults in the first term of their teaching practice at AKCENT College. The thesis aims to explore which aspects of language teaching competence derived from the findings of SLA research student teachers manage to develop within the scope of their teaching practice and how the learning processes can be stimulated with feedback generated through the student teacher's semi-structured reflection on audio recordings of their own lessons. The research was designed as a multi-case study of four student teachers and data collection techniques included participant observation, questionnaires, qualitative experiment and audio recordings of the student teachers' lessons taught to a group of adult English learners. The transcripts of the audio recordings were analysed following the principles of conversation analysis and discourse analysis; text analysis was used for other data. The findings of the study confirm conclusions of other...

Linhartová, Yveta ; Rýdl, Karel (advisor) ; Píšová, Michaela (referee) ; Chvál, Martin (referee)
The objective of this dissertation is to contribute to foreign language teaching methodology based on the practical skills acquired by the author in the course of her classroom-centered lecturing environment in English at the Faculty of Transport, Pardubice University. To be able to sufficiently complete the above objective, a lecturer must implement up-to-date teaching methods; in other words, s/he has to pursue the learner-centered approach to teaching. The paper is divided into two main parts. The first deals with the characteristic features of the learner-centered language acquisition methodology approach (in which the core of the teaching is a student's need). This part focuses on the fundamentals of language teaching focused on the professional needs of technically orientated students. In the second part the author seeks to verify several hypotheses in the process of defending the thesis that a language teacher's reflection on a learner's language learning 'needs analysis' impacts significantly on certain aspects of language teaching. The first chapter examines the theory of teaching objectives in terms of the relation objective - contents - method. In the second chapter, the author succinctly portrays the essence of applied linguistics as a theoretical framework for the presented topic. An...

Tůma, František ; Píšová, Michaela (advisor) ; Betáková, Lucie (referee) ; Dontcheva Navratilova, Olga (referee)
This dissertation deals with the developing and development of EFL learners' communicative competence in writing in a blended learning course. The dissertation addresses issues related to the conceptualization of developing communicative competence and measuring learners' progress as well as using ICT in foreign language teaching. The underlying research question was whether learners' communicative competence changed after using a series of online discussion tasks, and if so, in what manner. The empirical research was conducted as a case study in which 18 learners in an EFL course at the CEFR A2 level participated in three discussion tasks conducted online, using asynchronous discussion forum. The discussions were built on social constructivist learning theories. Methods of data collection and analysis included pre- and post-tests, learner corpus compiled from the texts written by the students in two online discussions and its analysis, and a questionnaire survey. The results showed that learners' overall level of communicative competence in writing improved. Specifically, the syntactic complexity of learners' language produced at the beginning and at the end of the course increased and learners' perceived fluency in writing improved. These findings support the claim that learners' active participation in...

Quinn Novotná, Veronika ; Mothejzíková, Jarmila (advisor) ; Píšová, Michaela (referee) ; Sherman, Tamah (referee)
Introduction: Presently, there are more people who speak English as a second and foreign language than there are native speakers. Next, this research set out to investigate, how familiar the phenomenon of English as a lingua franca (ELF) is in the Czech Republic, and consequently to raise awareness about it. Finally, it was our goal to conduct vast research exploring if and how the questions of language ideology are reflected in the teaching practice and in teacher training. Methodology: Both quantitative and qualitative research methods have been applied throughout the research process. The quantitative research included nine originally devised questionnaires. Qualitative data were obtained via conducting semi-structured interviews. Altogether, data were collected from 595 respondents (298 teachers, 285 students and 12 scientists). Results: First, the research results revealed the...
