Language and style of the plays written for Jára Cimrman Theatre This magister thesis deals with language analysis of the stage plays of Jára Cimrman Theatre. The opening chapter describes general information about the theatre and it's authors as well. The thesis is divided into two parts, the theoretical part and the practical part. The theoretical part is based on results of theoretical studies of different authors, especially Bohuslav Brouk, Henri Bergson, Ladislav Dvorský and Vladimír Borecký. The practical part contains the detailed language analysis of all 15 stage plays. This diploma work analyzes which types of language comic we can find there and how much are they extended. Linguistic performances are separated on the principle of linguistics on individual linguistic branches. This diploma work also discusses mystification as a common framework for realization of all comic means. Position of Antecedent of the 3rd Person Pronoun: Trends in Contemporary Czech

The aim of this thesis is to find out how co-referential relationships in Czech texts are developed in terms of the information and constituent structures. The data was processed using the following methods. Firstly I examined the available literature on information and constituent structures with special attention being paid to the formation of coreferential relations. This information was then compared to my own research. With regards to disparities between the approaches, it was necessary to introduce some basic terms that are used within my thesis (Chapter 2). Thereafter, I was able to introduce current approaches to the thesis, including the methodological basis of my work, which is represented by the foreign Centering Theory, because unlike other Czech approaches this theory includes predictions on the frequency of different ways of co-referential relationship development (Chapter 3). Secondly, the knowledge gained from literature was applied to two different types of data: corpus material of Prague Dependency Treebank and material obtained through a questionnaire survey (Chapter 4). Distribution of Adjectives and Restrictive Adverbials in Czech and Modern Greek

This paper deals with the distribution of adjectives and restrictive adverbials in Czech and Modern Greek. In the theoretical part the adjective classification within Czech and Modern Greek literature is presented, followed by the presentation of the scalar approach to adjectives and its basic notions. The second part covers the classification of the restrictive adverbials within Czech and Modern Greek literature. The empirical part consists of a corpus research which constitutes the base for the description of potential changes in the interpretation of adjectives in context of the restrictive adverbials. Follows a suggestion of a possible translation of the combination of adjectives and restrictive adverbials in Modern Greek.

Syntactic approach to agreement (with a special view to agreement of predicate with subject)

This thesis deals with syntactic relation of subject-predicate agreement in Czech, concentrating on special cases. The theoretical part describes the term "agreement" in terms of the traditional dependency approach, presents the definition of the term and specifies its width. It describes the subject-predicate agreement from from other theoretical perspectives, too (for example generative grammar analysis etc.). The main part of this theoretical chapter contains particular cases of subject-predicate agreement, as described in Czech grammars and textbooks. However, this description does not take into account all options and variants of agreement used in everyday conversation. Therefore, we investigate the problem of agreement through an empirical survey, which serves us to identify more complex cases (multiple subject with disjunctive, adversative and compared relation between its constituents; based on the cases found in the Czech National Corpus). Another source of data comes from a questionnaire, which maps how complex agreement structures are acquired by users of the language (students of the Faculty of Arts, Charles University). Usage of Verbal Adjectives in Contemporary Czech

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to describe and summarize the most characteristic features of verbal adjectives. It is divided into two parts. The first part contains a theoretical description of verbal adjectives. It is based on information included in Czech grammar books, handbooks and research articles. It deals with the description of function, form, classification and use of verbal adjectives in contemporary Czech. This section also contains definitions of some controversial points or inaccuracies of these descriptions regarding verbal adjectives. The second part of the thesis is dedicated to the research of selected features, it is focused on following types of verbal adjectives: -cí, -vší, -ný, -tý used in professional and journalistic style. The controversial points or inaccuracies of the descriptions defined in the first section of the thesis are examined on the material of The Czech National Corpus. It is focused on following features of verbal adjectives: the number and nature of the preserved syntactic arguments, word order position of the adjectives and their dominating noun, and the syntactic function of the adjectives.

Application of translation in education of the Czech language for francophone speakers

The thesis deals with the possibilities of the use of translation in education of the Czech language for francophone speakers. The thesis aims to analyse the use of translation in the textbooks of Czech for francophone speakers, in particular, to examine the types and representation of translation exercises in selected textbooks and to observe the use of communication-oriented translation exercises. Based on the analysis, the thesis formulates didactic recommendations that could contribute to more adequate use of translation in foreign language teaching, or rather in teaching Czech as a foreign language. The partial objective is to monitor the attitude of students to translation in teaching Czech as a foreign language through a questionnaire survey.

Cognitive Analysis of Temporal Prepositions in Czech

The present thesis deals with temporal prepositions in Czech from a cognitive and constructional grammar perspective. It aims at demonstrating how one conceptualises time, the emphasis being put on time conceptualised as space. The introduction of the thesis presents a brief summary of the terminology. It is followed by the theoretical part, which has three sections. The first one engages in the characteristics of Czech prepositions; the second one presents cognitive approaches to the analysis of English temporal prepositions; and the third one discusses the methods of analysing English temporal expressions within the framework of constructional grammar. The practical part deals first with a table, in which we analyse all the sample sentences of the prepositions we focus on. Attention is paid to the individual features examined and their relevance in the table. We also discuss the methodology used to form the final version of the table. This is followed by the characteristics of the individual prepositions itself and by recording their meanings into constructions. The last section of the practical part presents the results of the analysis. Syntactic analysis of Czech speakers in the Romanian Banat

The purpose of this thesis is an analysis of syntactic perturbations in the oral production of Czech speakers of the Bigr village at the Banat region, Romania. In the theoretical part, this thesis describes the historical and linguistic context of the Banat's Czech villages, with special emphasis on Bigr. In the analytical part then, the thesis set out to test hypotheses based on previous research, using the BANAT language corpus created for this study. In cases where it deems possible, the results are compared to the ORAL language corpus of spoken Czech. The analysis verified the existence of certain phenomena of the Bigerian Czech (e.g. prepositional instrumental of instrument, omission of svůj pronoun), the frequency of which partly corresponds to the language situation in oral production in the Czech Republic (e.g. forward position of pronominal subject, reflexive se, si and auxiliary verb být). The presence of some other phenomena could not be verified.

Horse in Czech Phraseology, Proverbs and Fairy Tales. Contribution to the Linguistic Picture of the World

The focus of this bachelor thesis is the image of the horse in the Czech phraseology, proverbs and fairytales of Karel Jaromír Erben. The material processing has been based on cognitive linguistics and linguistic worldview theory and their methodological tools. First, the theoretical-methodological scope is explained with the focus on cognitive approach to language and linguistic worldview. Using these methods, the language and culture image of the horse in Czech environmentis processed, as presented by dictionaries. The etymology and history of the expression are examined; the meanings are defined using monolingual dictionaries, followed by the list of the most common synonyms, hyponyms and co hyponyms (hřebec, kobyla/klisna, hříbě etc.) On the grounds of phraseology, idiomology and paremiology as well as figurative usage, neologisms, derivations and compositions, the stereotype of the horse in Czech linguistic worldview is described. This is followed by the image of the horse in Erben's České pohádky. At the end of the thesis an open definition of the expression horse is given.
