Increasing the Safety of Pedestrians in Road Traffic

My thesis is engaged in increasing safety of pedestrians in urban traffic. My work analyses cases of accidents in a specific area and attitudes and experiences of pedestrians as well as local inhabitants. The aim of my work is to map an accident rate – a case study and formation of applicable measures in the town Třeboň, thus in an urban area. The first part of my work is engaged in theory, which is divided in used proper terminology in accordance with the law followed by a universal view of issues of traffic and their safety. The empirical part of my work then examines analysis of dangerous places in a selected locality. These places were chosen on the base on a questionnaire survey among local residents with the goal to point out these dangerous places by actual traffic accidents in the town Třeboň. It is necessary to determine applicable measures in dangerous places from particular traffic accidents and thus to help increasing safety of pedestrians in a given place. Because of acquisition of necessary data, analysis of documents, a questionnaire survey and subsequent evaluation of results is used in my work. In conclusion I evaluated results and created a draft measure.

The King of Sarcasm: Analysis of Chandler Bing's Humorous Utterances in the TV series Friends

This thesis is focused on the analysis of the humorous lines of Chandler Bing from the series Friends (1994-2004). Specifically, it aims to find out how defensible the comedic typification of this character as the "King of Sarcasm" is, i.e., whether sarcasm can really be considered the dominant strategy of Chandler's verbal humor. However, sarcasm is a concept with an ambiguous definition, and for any further investigation it is always necessary to specify how the researcher understands it. Therefore, the work first focuses on summarizing current research in the field of sarcasm, i.e. how different authors define it, especially in relation to irony. The output from the theoretical part of the work consists of two important points: in the discussion of irony, it is the adoption of the theory of contextual inappropriateness, as presented by American linguist Salvatore Attardo. When it comes to the definition of sarcasm, an approach that strictly separates pure sarcasm from irony is defended, following the texts of Polish linguists Marta Dynel and Anna Muszynska. Sarcasm as a category includes non-ironic utterances of a critical, offensive nature, which are at the same time characterized by a certain linguistic or conceptual ingenuity. The Phenomenon of Highly Medieval Preaching with a Focus on Dominican Sermons Written in Latin from the 13th Century

The thesis is devoted to Latin preaching in the 13th century, it maps its state and changes and discusses in more detail a new specific form of preaching, the so-called thematic sermon. The second content focus of the thesis is the Order of the Brothers Preachers, which emerges in the same period. Both of these central themes of the thesis are set in the context of high medieval phenomena that had a considerable influence on the formation of both preaching and the Dominican Order. It is its own reflection on its approach to preaching that is the subject of the analysis of texts coming from the two masters of the Order. The specifics of Dominican preaching and its relation to the thematic sermon of the time are supported by an analysis of three Dominican sermons delivered at the University of Paris.

Compendium Anticlaudiani - commented translation into Czech

The aim of this thesis is a translation of a medieval Latin work Compendium Anticlaudiani into Czech. The Compendium is a prosaic digest of the epos Anticlaudianus written by poet Alan of Lille († 1203) in the 12th century. The thesis consists of two parts: the first one contains a brief characterisation of the translated work (its model, genesis, contribution of its creator), a description of the translation method and of the way the edition of the text is handled. The second part comprises the translation itself accompanied by footnotes, in which the intertextual relations and historical realia are explained.

Reception of Classical Antiquity in Short School Writings from the Late Middle Ages - Edition and Introduction

The following bachelor thesis is the editio princeps and English translation of four short Latin pieces of writing of Czech origin which were copied by the scribe Crux of Telč in the mid-15th century and which deal with antiquity and classical mythol- ogy. The edition is supplied with critical apparatus and apparatus fontium that points out the textual tradition of the edited opuscules. The thesis is opened with an introductory study setting the texts into the general context of the reception of an- tiquity in the Middle Ages; especially highlighted is the use of themes of classical antiquity within the school education, where the edited texts belong as well. Besides the edition itself, the goal of the thesis is to illustrate in form of short case studies on the particular texts how the ancient culture and literature was reflected in the Middle Ages and the variety of "afterlife" it had.

Life in St. George's Abbey in Prague in the Middle Ages

This dissertation focuses on the community of Benedictine nuns at St. George's Church in Prague Castle from its foundation around 970 to the 16th century. It is based on a detailed study of primary sources (especially surviving monastic charters, manuscripts, but also records of church administration and other extra-monastic references) and takes into account the results and approaches of contemporary monastic research. Thus, the doctoral thesis revises existing knowledge and traditional clichés, opens new questions and seeks answers to old ones (e. g. concerning convent's Benedictine observance, Latin literacy of the nuns, the enclosure, and authority over the abbey). It is the first scholarly work to examine in detail the number and origins of the nuns, their education, kinship ties, contacts, and the spatial framework that determined their everyday life. It also traces the wider staff of their church and analyses in detail the major conflicts that influenced the development of the convent.

In-line skating lessons at primary schools

Title: Education of inline skating in primary schools Objective: The goal of this thesis was the analysis of the inline skating education in primary schools, focused on the form of education, conditions for education, material and staff equipment. Methods: The theoretical part of the thesis was prepared by descriptive analytical method and research of available Czech literature and foreign sources. Survey research was used in the practical part of the thesis. There were used two different questionnaires: one for the schools which already have inline skating in their education plan and the second one for the schools which do not have it in their education plan. The survey was sent to all primary schools in Czech Republic by email. The results were statistically processed by using absolute and relative frequencies. Results: Inline skating is being taught in 16% of primary schools in Czech republic. There are 4 different forms of education used: a freetime activity in form of extracurricular activity 64,7%, part of physical education lessons for whole class 14,7%, part of physical education as a optional activity for selected members of class 8,8% and extra occasional activities (sport day, school course and others) 5,9%. The Role of Understanding in Latin Rhetoric

The thesis deals with understanding in the rhetorical art of Marcus Fabius Quintilianus, Marcus Tullius Cicero, and the author of the Rhetorica ad Herennium, how they understood their art and how they took into account comprehension on the part of the listener. The starting point of the investigation is phenomenological. It is based on Martin Heidegger's definition of the phenomenon of interpretation from Being and Time. The structure of practical interpretation and the fore-structures in which each interpretation is grounded are traced in theoretical texts of rhetorical art. This allows for a deeper analysis of the understanding that speakers mention and for capturing understanding even where they are not explicitly thematized. The analysis of the texts is divided into two parts. The first deals with understanding on the part of the speaker. The connection between the practical interpretation of rhetoric and the convergence of Roman rhetorical art and philosophy is shown. The second analytical section is devoted primarily to the listener's understanding, the connection of interpretation to attunement and proof.
