The Concept of Self-Definition: Emersonian Principles in Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man and Richard Wright's Native Son
Piňosová, Alžběta ; Robbins, David Lee (advisor) ; Ulmanová, Hana (referee)
The works of the nineteenth-century American thinker Ralph Waldo Emerson continue to be inspiring particularly due to their empowering effect on the individual. It is especially Emerson's concepts of the sovereignty of the individual, the importance of self-definition, the view of life as a transitory flow, and the relationship between freedom and fate which can be practically and usefully applied in the life of an individual. It is possible, then, to understand and evaluate Emerson's works through the practical effects of his concepts, in other words through the prism of pragmatism. Emerson's empowering philosophy can be of use especially to disempowered groups such as African Americans. The Emersonian themes which are to be found in the works of various African-American non-fiction writers such as W.E.B. Du Bois, James Baldwin, Martin Luther King Jr. and Cornel West testify to the relevance of Emerson for this minority group. In Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man and Richard Wright's Native Son, two African-American novels, Emersonian principles are shown to be of utmost importance for the positive development of the protagonists.

Man´s Position In Family Planning
CÁPOVÁ, Adéla
The participation of men in family planning appears to be a suitable tool for the improvement of relationships between couples and their children. This thesis studies the attitudes of men towards family planning questions. The theoretical part of the thesis is divided into three main chapters: Family planning, The Male Indentity and the Social Roles of Men. The research methods which were chosen were based upon the collection of data. Twenty semi-structured interviews with early adult men were processed by means of grounded theory. Interview questions involved the definition of family planning and seven categories were created upon that basis: the association of the concept of family planning, images of family, attitudes towards the meaning of children in life, male attitudes regarding men{\crq}s role in child care, paternity leave, contraception as well as solutions regarding fertility disorders. The chosen methodology should assess the important social influences that play a role in the attitudes of men towards family planning and the roles of men in family planning. The setting of the conditions for the beginning of reproduction should be the result of negotiation within the couple. In spite of the willingness to change parenting roles, negotiation still leads to a traditional division of these parenting roles, where the woman is a care-giver and the man is the breadwinner. Gender sensitive upbringing is a good way to give support towards the responsibility within the family planning of men and women; it leads them in equal negotiation regarding questions of parenting. The results of this thesis is the creation of a new theory about the role of men in family planning and interested researchers are to be encouraged to verify its validity by continuing in this area of research.

The Problem of human nature in the conception of pleasure in Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics
Synek, Stanislav ; Špinka, Štěpán (advisor) ; Karfík, Filip (referee)
The essay is trying to reveal the sources of normativity in the Aristotelian conception of pleasure, resp. in general composition of his ethic. The interpretation works mainly with the two treaties of pleasure in the books VII and X of Nicomachean Ethics, but also takes other passages into account. The two main questions are: What is pleasure? What is the good pleasure? To answer these questions the conception of human nature (Pi?Jsis) must be set forth. The essay is trying to show that pleasure itself (hédone) does not allow to establish moral normativity and therefore cannot be acknowledged to be the highest good. The possibility of the difference between "good" and "bad" pleasures appears only with reference to the "object" of pleasure (to hécfy), i.e. with a sort of "stepping out" from solely subjective feeling of pleasure (hédone) to its "objective" content (to hécfy). The normativity itself is established on a specific conception of humanity that is introduced on the key motives of human "task" (ergon) and human nature (P1!Jsis). It shows up that the most important source of normativity is godhood which is represented by reason (logos) in men. The relation between pleasure and the highest good (eudaimonia) alias the actualization (energeia) of man's life in the best way (kat' arete) is ambivalent: on...
