Linguistic analysis of baroque text

The diplomee in her work occupies with the complex linguistic analysis of a baroque sermon. The topic of the research is Dvě sprostné kázaní o pravém a levém oku svatého Martina by Ferdinand Karel Reisman (Two Modest Sermons About the Right and the Left Eye of Saint Martin). The analysis is based on semantics and pragmatics of the text. The diplomee focuses in particular on the means of language which are different from today´s usage and compares them with the present state. She deals with morphological, syntactical and lexical means. Attention is also paid to ortography and phonology. Analysing the work diplomee had both the text in the original spelling and the text rewritten in today´s language at her disposal. The text of the sermon is included in the diploma work.

Between Nostalgia and Desaster. The Change of 1989 in Literature Written in German

Anottation The topic of this dissertation is the motif of social revolution of the year 1989, in selected articles of German written literature. Through the specific analysis of individual novels and the search for common characteristics, the aim of this work is to answer the question whether there is some unifying topic or poetics of the 1989 revolution. The characteristics of the literary ? historical contexts of this period preceed the analytical part. Following chapters deal with concrete novels, with the help of citations from the text, to the depiction of social conditions and events around the revolution. The focus is mainly on the authors of the "second wave?, who were specifically dealing with the issue of the year 1989, because they personally witnessed the revolution so they were able to derive from their own experiences. The conclusion is a summary of the findings from the analysis of individual writings regarding the literalization of the era of the revolution.

Jiří Kolář's Nový don Quijote

My thesis "Jiří Kolář's Nový don Quijote" focuses on the hitherto unknown manuscript of Jiří Kolář called Nový don Quijote (The New Don Quixote). It was written between 1936 and 1938/1939; in Kolář's bibliography it thus occupies a position between the typescript "novel reafora" Rudý havran (The Red Raven, written 1934-1936) and Kolář's first published collection of poems Křestný list (Birth Certificate,1941). Nový don Quijote is a poetical autobiography and it closes the first period of Kolář's literary work. It is divided into three parts in which the author summarizes his personal, erotic and creative life and builds his "poetical genealogy". The second part contains pieces of Kolář's older work, including two extensive examples from Rudý havran. Seen from this perspective Nový don Quijote is an invaluable source for the understanding of Kolář's early published writings. My thesis is divided into three parts. The Czech translations of Rilke's "Sonette an Orpheus"

Since the personalities of the translators and their methods are so different, it is difficult to compare the six translations of poems by Rilke. Nevertheless common characteristics can be found. First of all, everyone keeps the original form of the sonnet. This statement seems less trivial when we think of the French translation praxis, where transformation of poetry to prose is a standard. We might also think of Jakub Deml, who (due to lack of time) poeticized a small choice from the Book of Images in prose. The fact that Czech translators usually stick to the original poetic form attests both the high level of the tradition of translation in this country and the creative ambition of Czech mediators. On the other hand we can observe a certain indifference towards the Rilke-scholarship among the six translators. It could be proved that Renč knew the monograph on Rilke by Holthusen, it however didn't have any impact on his translation. This kind of deficiency is even more obvious in Pokorný, who suggest the interpretative approach, yet doesn't know the myth of Orpheus in detail. Vítek is aware of the "intellectual anatomy" of the collection of poems, but he doesn't make any use of this knowledge. Giacomo Leopardi, romantic poet?

The diploma thesis "Giacomo Leopardi, Romantic poet?" addresses this author's poetics from the point of view of its relation to Romantic poetics. The subject of this research is limited in so doing to lyrical poems contained in Canti. However, his literature critics related to Romanticism are taken in consideration as well. The thesis text consists of two main parts. The first part is dedicated to Romanticism characteristics and it's specifics in various national literatures. It concentrates mainly on reception and response of Italian literary sphere to Romanticism as well as on the attitude that Giacomo Leopardi assumed towards it. The second part is then dedicated to the analysis of the poems texts itself; to their form, content and idea.

Literature of architextual tension. Poetics of the sacred

The dissertation deals with the literature influenced by religious experience. We do not attempt an overall solution of the issue of the relationship between aesthetics and theology; our goal is to describe the so-called "Catholic" literature as one of the possible models of "religious" literature. An ideal example of this model and the material basis of the thesis is Jan Čep's book Zeměžluč (Centaury, 1931). The study is divided into three parts: the first one summarizes the existing discussion of the problem in general (chapter 1), in theology and literary criticism (chapters 2 and 4), and it examines the usability of the term "ideology" (chapter 3). The second part develops our theoretical basis, the theory of intertextuality and interdiscursivity (chapter 6). The subject of this study is not a literary-historical era nor a genre in the traditional sense. We see it as a coalescence of two textual (semiotic) areas. The theory of interdiscursivity allows us to follow the textualization of religion: the mechanism through which real Catholicism as a religious fact turns into a system of signs, i.e. into a text, which is subject to the general laws and possibilities of a text description (Lotman, Piatigorski) (chapter 7). Poetry of the first three decades of the 19th century. Starting points and conditions of creation and its genre composition in the work of the enlightenment poetic generation

The PhD thesis Poetry of the First Three Decades of the 19th Century. Starting Points and Conditions of Creation and Its Genre Composition in the Work of the Enlightenment Poetic Generation deals with poetry of the Czech national revival starting from appearance of Puchmajer's poetic school stemming from Enlightenment classicism to pieces of work created under the growing influence of romanticism in the 30ies of the 19th century. The goal of this thesis is to follow the development, transformations and mutual action of the most important lyrical and epic genres of revival poetry, in view of the contemporary role of writing in verse and of the specific conditions of creation as well as reception of poetic work in the Czech language. It assumes and verifies on specific texts that for revival authors, writing of Czech poems is especially an expression of patriotic efforts; talent and literary erudition are not a necessary predisposition of creation. The thesis analyses poetic texts and generalises the results in the form of basic features of revival poetry. A wood path to the vital self: the power of nature in D. H. Lawrence's Lady Chatterley's Lover

A wood in spring of such tender and perceptive description would certainly stir a living string not only in Connie Chatterley, the heroine of D. H. Lawrence's novel Lady Chatterley's Lover. The vividness and intensity of life that glares out of this 'picture' represents a dominant feature of Lawrence's novel which belongs to the last, fifth period of the author's career. It is not a mere coincidence that what later became published as Lady Chatterley's Lover was, in fact, a novel Lawrence originally proposed to call Tenderness. It is indeed sensibility of extraordinary degree, intense perception of colours, of slight movements and changes that occur in nature and the parallel changes taking place in the characters that play a vital role in this novel. This "extension of consciousness, [ ... ] an ability to experience what it is like to be a tree or a daisy or a breaking wave or what he (A. Huxley) called Lawrence's 'superior otherness",2 chiefly account for the poetic, soothing, almost pastoral character of Lady Chatterley's Lover. Goldsmithing in Bohemia during the Luxembourgh Era from the Viennese Royal Court Collections

Key words: Charles IV, Luxembourgs, medieval Bohemia, goldsmith, Secular and Ecclesiastical Treasury in Wienna. This bachelor thesis is about significant Czech goldsmith works produced in the 14th century Bohemia which are nowadays located in Secular and Ecclesiastical Treasury (Weltliche und Geistliche Schatzkammer) in Vienna. After depicting of a concise development Viennese court collections the text concentrates on the seventeen works of art, specifically on their history, technical qualities, artistic or art historical charakteristics. The thesis includes several items of the Holy Roman Empire treasury which were modified or supplemented between 1350 and 1378, when Charles IV managed them. Afterwards it discusses tree reliquaries, which became a part of the Holy Roman Empire treasury during the Sigismund of Luxembourg era. The treatise also deals with a Czech royal spehere and scepter, which were used until 1627. In conclusion there are described another three reliquaries deposited in the Ecclesiastical Treasury in Vienna. The possibility of their Czech origin is a matter of great concern for some authors.

The literary critical and translation work of Albert Vyskočil

The diploma thesis The Literary Critical and Translation Work of Albert Vyskočil focuses mainly on the two activities of Vyskočil mentioned in the title, his other work spanning many more fields. As for the literary critical work, the thesis addresses, first, the writers and poets he considers the best (Karel Hynek Mácha occupying the foremost place), and, second, the nature of his critiques. Vyskočil looks for genuineness in art, such art having its origin in God. By analyzing four translated texts and the source texts, the part concerning Vyskočil's translations aims at finding constant principles that guide his work. Apart from trying to adequately render the meaning and style of the original, Vyskočil aims at achieving naturalness of language, therefore, he uses substitution, on many levels; furthermore, he uses compensation, condensation and explicitation. At its end, the thesis comments on the interconnection between the two Vyskočil's activities, there being similarities of language and style, and also of themes and opinions expressed in both. Apart from the above mentioned the thesis states general biographical data and briefly introduces the author's other works.
