The Co-operative Principle in technical texts

Tato práce analyzuje užití kooperativního principu a konceptů s ním souvisejících v odborných textech. Kooperativní princip, poprvé specifikován Gricem, je jednou z nejvýznamnějších teorií v pragmatice a jeho užití nebo opomíjení lze pozorovat téměř v každé komunikaci. S ohledem na to, autor práce analyzuje odborné technické texty a popisuje různé pragmatické jevy s tímto principem související. Práce dále popisuje zdvořilostní princip, související s principem kooperativním, demonstruje jeho užití a ukazuje různé zdvořilostní strategie používané v odborných technických textech. Součástí je také vysvětlení pragmatických aspektů odborných technických textů a jejich ukázání přímo v textu. Na závěr jsou odborné odborné technické texty porovnány s texty netechnickými a je vysvětlen rozdíl v užití kooperativního a zdvořilostního principu.

Cooperative principles v talkschow všechnoparty

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to analyze communication within the TV talk show "Všechnopárty" from two main points of view: firstly in a light of keeping the Principles of Cooperation and Politeness within dialogues between the moderator of this show and his guests, and secondly with regard to transformation of common communication caused by the fact that the conversations are made public by TV. The thesis is divided into three parts. The first one explains terms such a Communication, Semiotics, Pragmatics, Grice's Conversational Maxims or Leech's Politeness Principles, and so provides a theoretical background of the problematic. The second chapter describes methods that were used to analyze chosen episodes of the talk show "Všechnopárty". There are two methods used in this thesis: a pragmatics analysis for the description of appearance of the Grice's and Leech's Maxims and a semiotics analysis for the interpretation of the effect of presentation of the dialogues by TV. The third chapter then applies these theoretical findings to five chosen episodes of the talk show. Its first part describes situations where Grice's and Leech's Maxims are not observed and how it effects the whole communication. Teaching politeness at 2nd grade of elementary school

This diploma thesis deals with the way to teach politeness in elementary schools. Based on the theoretical literature, in the first theoretical part on the background of the Czech language there are defined basic terms such as pragmalinguistics, politeness principle, politeness strategies, face etc. Considering the didactic character of this work, both verbal and nonverbal aspects of politeness are described in the relation to the teacher-student communication. The practical part of the thesis focuses on the analysis of how the aspects of politeness are taught in Czech language lessons and included in three contemporary textbook series. Other source studied is the analysis of the relevant survey among teachers. On the basis of the survey results there are made up some activities with presumably good influence on practicing examined aspects of politeness.

Politeness in Communication of Women and Men

The bachelor thesis deals with the issues of politeness in communication of women and men. The focus is on three types of communication situation, which differ depending on the gender of the communicators: 1) communicators are only women, 2) communicators are only men, 3) communicators are both men and women. The theoretical part of the thesis deals with delimiting communication, politeness concepts and social roles. The work is delimited towards Grice's cooperative principle in relation to Leech's concept of politeness. The aim of the bachelor thesis is to compare the theory and the approach of individual linguists with real displays of politeness in common communication on the basis of a questionnaire. Special attention is given to the characteristic of language devices used in polite communication; the use of language devices by males and females is compared. An integral component of the work is correlating the differences in the conception as well as in the display of politeness in men and women with the differences in the language perception of the world of a man and a woman.

The comparing of Grice's and Leech's conversational principles

The goal of this bachelor thesis is to explore Herbert Paul Grice's Cooperative Principle and Geoffrey Neil Leech's Politeness Principle and demonstrate on the basis of these findings the relationship between cooperative communication and courtesy communication by means of illustration of concrete texts. The theoretical part is a pivotal component of the thesis. It focuses in detail on the principles of the Cooperative Principle (maxims of Quantity, Quality, Relation and Manner), on the features of cooperative behaviour, on the questions of Conversational Implicature and its examples. Another chapter deals with interrelationship of the Cooperative and the Politeness Principles. The principles of the Politeness Principle (the Tact Maxim, the Generosity Maxim, the Aprobation Maxim, the Modesty Maxim, the Agreement Maxim and the Sympathy Maxim) and metalinguistic aspects of politeness are another component of the theoretical part. The practical part analyses a verbal behaviour of communication partners in the light of observance and violation of the Cooperative and the Politeness Principles by means of ten transcribed conversations.
