Migration and Development: Impact of Remittances from Europe and Russia on Armenia

- English Migration, transnationalism and remittances are phenomena that receive a lot of attention in social sciences. As part of remittances, this attention is amplified by their economical impact on the economies of entire countries. My thesis is devoted to the social influences and impacts of financial remittances on families and entire communities. The work deals with how individuals, families or entire communities are influenced by financial aid sent by one or possibly more family members from abroad. Using semi-structured in-depth interviews, the work examines the effects of remittances and the "dependency syndrome" on them. In its first, theoretical part, the thesis explains the key concepts with which it will deal - migration, transnationalism, diaspora remittances - and whose effects it will subsequently examine in the analytical part based on semi-structured interviews. The data is processed on the basis of qualitative approach, which allows sufficient analysis and insight into the issue. The conclusion of the work reflects the knowledge obtained from the interviews and the perception of migrants and their family members about the effects of remittances and, consequently, the remittances' "dependence syndrome".

Czech diaspora policy, its dimensions and international context

5 Abstract This final thesis, Czech diaspora policy, its dimensions and international context, is focused on the diaspora policy of Czechia towards the population living abroad. It consists of several parts. The first part introduces the thesis with the key concepts that appear in it. The theoretical part will introduce the concept of diaspora policies. It will then briefly summarise the history and current situation of emigration from the territory of Czechia, the development of Czech diaspora policy in the European context and the activities of the main institutions dedicated to the diaspora. In the practical part, I will introduce different approaches to comparing diaspora policies and I will analyse the diaspora policy of Czechia using the multiple correspondence analysis schemes introduced by Ragazzi (2014) in his article. Based on this analysis, the policies of Czechia will be evaluated. The thesis will be enriched by the results of interviews with representatives of main institutions involved in diaspora policy making. The thesis uses data collected during projects funded by the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic and the Grant Agency of the Czech Republic. Analysis of Czech return migration and social remittances - A case study of Ireland Abstract The thesis connects two relatively young concepts - social remittance and return migration, both happening on the background of transnationalism. This Master's Thesis is a case study of Czech migration to Ireland. The thesis aims to identify the return motives and the so-called breaking point - when and under what circumstances the decision to return is made, whether there is a potential for the transfer of social remittances to the non-migrant population in the country of origin and how migration strategies, acquisition and the spread of social remittances differ for low-skilled and high-skilled migrants. The research is based on a qualitative approach. It allows a deeper and closer understanding of the return motives, transnational relations, the acquisition, transfer and impact of social remittances, their character and mutual connections among the selected group of informants. For that reason, the research method uses semi- structured interviews with two groups of informants - the Czechs living in Ireland and the Czechs who already returned from Ireland to the Czech Republic. Bosnian diaspora through the eyes of Sarajevans - perceptions of emigration and stereotypes

The master's thesis entitled "Bosnian diaspora through the eyes of Sarajevans - perceptions of emigration and stereotypes" brings a closer view of the Bosnian diaspora and public opinion about it from the perspective of Sarajevans. It represents a socio-psychological qualitative research based on the analysis of 18 semi-structured interviews with the inhabitants of Sarajevo. Using existing theoretical concepts, the primary goal is to explore and list the most widespread stereotypes about the Bosnian diaspora, regardless of whether they are war refugees or economic emigrants. The thesis also represents an attempt to identify the main reasons for their existence and maintenance and looks for possible proposals for their elimination. Whether the departure is legitimate in the eyes of Sarajevans, whether the diaspora lives better, how it was affected by life in the "West" and to what extent Sarajevans are aware of the diaspora's potential and benefits for Bosnia and Herzegovina are some of the questions this thesis seeks to answer. Two Yugoslavias: One Lost, the Other Dremt of. War and Disintegration of the Yugoslav Federation from the Perspective of the Yugoslav Emigrant Community in the Czech Republic

The thesis deals with the reflection of the war conflict and the subsequent disintegration of Yugoslavia in the first half of the 1990s from the perspective of representatives of various ethnic and religious groups from the countries of this former federation, who found a new home in the Czech Republic. The aim of the work is to capture their recollection and perception of the causes and consequences of this historical event through oral history, in accordance with the post-positivist paradigm following the cultural turnover in the 1980s. Based on the analysis and interpretation of oral history interviews, I will attempt to interpret the intrusion into the historical subjectivity of these narrators. I will also be interested in the question of their post- conflict identity and their attitude towards the disintegration of Yugoslavia and towards post- war trans-nationalism. The narrators are ex-Yugoslavs who were born in the 1960s and 1970s in former Yugoslavia on the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina, during the Civil war (1992- 1995) were already adults and they emigrated during the war or immediately after that. Vietnam close by and far away. Children of Vietnamese descent in Czech Republic form the perspective of transnationalism.

This dissertation is based on a narrative analysis of eighteen life biographies of children of Vietnamese descent in Czech Republic. It shows that these young people lives are embedded in a "transnational social space", which spans between two geographical regions of Vietnam and Czech Republic, and which leaves them exposed to a set of social expectations, cultural values and patterns of human interaction, that are shaped by more than one political, economic and social system. It also describes how these people, through multiple connected social networks and social relationships, transform cultural practices, interpretations, experiences and identities, which deconstructs the idea of integrity between place, identity and culture. Although the primary aim of the work is to analyse how children of Vietnamese operate in transnationalized social and cultural contexts, transnational practices, such as homeland visits, kinship ties and sending remittances are also being explored. In doing so the children of Vietnamese migrants are neither perceived as "existing in vacuum" nor are their identities described as "deterritorialized".
