Diploma thesis "Specific cultural units in communicational codes of Czech and American television series" is a structural analysis of two televisional series: Czech Pojišťovna štěstí and American Desperate Houswives. Television series are modern myths that communicate values, belives and rules of certain societies. This thesis tries to approache distinctions in a langue-structure of analysed material. The research is based on findings of structuralism, poststructuralism and cultural studies. The thesis consists of two major parts. First is theoretical summary of the basic thoughts that appeared during historical shift from structuralism to cultural studies. The second part is analysis itself.

Production Ideology of the television serial Proč bychom se netopili

The diploma thesis "Production Ideology of the television serial Proč bychom se netopili" deals with the production process in the making of a television serial. The initial focus was on the formation of one of the main characters, Keny, and on his position in the production as a whole. The thesis builds upon the ideas developed by cultural studies. These combine the structuralist approach inspired by the linguistics of Ferdinand de Saussure with the ideological approach based mainly on the thought of Louis Althusser. The production process is enquired into by Elena Levine who distinguishes five key categories of production. The research section which represents the core of the present diploma thesis is methodologically formed by grounded theory. It is based on qualitative interviews with those in key positions with respect to the production process. In the analytical section, the thesis operates with Roland Barthes's concept of mythologies. In the interviews, the informants make reference to the category of production routine, of the myth concerning the ideal "waterman" (the main character Keny being a symbol of this myth), of the production conditions in Czech Television and of the viewer who appears to be the ultimate instance. Diploma thesis "The development of teen drama since 1990s. On the example of TV series Beverly Hills 90210 and Gossip girl." is thematic and narrative analysis of two American teen drama television series, Beverly Hills 90210 and Gossip girl. Teen drama genre has been developing for more than twenty years and the aim of my research is to compare the display of the youth in teen drama since the early 1990s until present. In the theoretical part of my work I present a sociological and culturological basis for study of youth and adolescence, as well as classification of serial production within television studies and description of its impact on development of teen drama. The empirical part includes qualitative theme analysis of each of the series and narrative analysis of characters.

Způsob organizace rozhlasového a televizního vysílání má v různých zemích různou podobu, podmíněnou politickými, ekonomickými, technologickými a kulturními specifikami daného státu. Při určité míře zjednodušení lze v této rozmanitosti vysledovat dva typy vysílání, které jsou výsledkem historického vývoje, a z něhož vyplývají také dva odlišné typy organizací (co do formy společnosti, financování, způsobu řízení, požadavků na programové výstupy atd.), jež toto vysílání provozují. Jedná se o rozhlasové a televizní organizace veřejného sektoru (státní nebo založené veřejným právem) a soukromého sektoru.
