Content Analysis of the presentation of Black Lives Matter Movement in Czech media

The Bachelor's thesis on the topic of Content Analysis of the presentation of Black Lives Matter movement in Czech media aims to construct an image of the Black Lives Matter movement based on two selected Czech media using qualitative content analysis. The chosen media are the on-line versions of the outlets Respekt and Echo, which were selected based on their political attitude and the fact that they are not solely news media, but authors add their own opinion and view. The studied sample consists of 38 articles published in the chosen media during 2020 and 2021 and is analysed based on grounded theory and a brief discourse analysis based on Allan Bell. The paper finds that the image of the movement differs between the two media outlets. Respekt's attitude toward the movement is consistent, the authors present it as a non- hierarchical protest movement and use neutral rhetoric for further description. Based on broader context (such as the overall tone of the articles or the choice of people that were interviewed on the topic), it is certain that Respekt supports the movement. In the case of Echo24.cz, an ambiguity in the overall attitude towards the movement can be seen which does not help create a clear image of BLM. The Action Repertoire of Czech Women's Organizations

Concern of this master thesis are action repertoires of czech feminist organizations. The main goal of this paper is to find out whether there are some types of activism in terms of following characteristics in the Czech Republic: organizational age, political opportunity structure, human and financial resources, and action repertoir to be found. The thesis is devided into two parts - theoretical and empirical. The author introduces evolution of the social movement theory in the theoretical part. Greater attention is given to an advocacy function of civil society organizations and to action repertoire, which social movement organizations use to reach their goals. Subsequently is shown how the literature talks about particular forms of action and its selection. There are characteristics mentioned above used in Hierarchical Cluster Analysis on sample of twenty-nine czech feminist organization in the empirical part. Finally, findings of this paper are being discussed. The Comparison of Selected Social Movement Organizations

Title of the Bachelor's Thesis: Comparison of Selected Social Movement Organizations Abstract: This bachelor thesis compares the social movement organizations on the basis of the resource mobilization theory. In relation to the resources, organizations use various strategies. Aim of this thesis is to identify similarities and differences in the strategies that organization use in relation to selected resources. This thesis focuses on material resources, human resources and the Internet. The theoretical part introduces the issue of civil society and civil society organizations. The largest part is devoted to the theory of resource mobilization, including the specification of individual types of resources and followed by a description of selected organization strategies. In the empirical part is made a comparative analysis of selected social movement organizations. To achieve the objective it was chosen a method of semi-structured interviews with representatives of selected organizations. Of activists and people: A discourse analysis of selected cases of political activism in the Czech context

The thesis deals with media representation of protests in the Czech media. They are anti-communist protests, student, "anti - austerity", anti-Roma and anti-racist or antifascist. The author has used critical discourse analysis on a sample of media texts from 1/2008 to 7/2014 period. It focused on analyzing the labeling of protesters, representing the relationship between the protests and democracy and the protesters and society or "ordinary people". The author concludes that labeling the protesters as well as representation of the relationship between protest and democracy in the reference sample strongly reflects the overall concept of the Czech post-communist identity as the one that emphasizes moderation, but also individualism or rather minimalist definition of politics as limited to the party or parliamentary politics. As congruent are usually presented anticommunist protests and student protests, on the other hand suspicious or problamatic are framed union protests or "radical" or "extrem" protests.

Cycling advocates: reinventing politics in the era of late modernity

Cycling advocacy has taken a form of a popular worldwide social movement in the beginning of the 21st century. Cyclists demand not only improved conditions for cycling, but also a reform in the way the city is being run in order to be "livable" and saturated with "quality public spaces". This dissertation attempts to put the phenomenon in the context of the theory of risk society and it attempts to incorporate impulses from the theoretical tradition of ANT. The cycling controversy is being read as a re-invention of politics in urban arenas. What is political about the bicycle? More than it may seem. The bicycle has endured a long trajectory of political appropriation by various groups in order to arrive at a point where it began to be conceived as the default starting point of the critique of automobility and Western modernity. As a consequence the bicycle emerges as a loaded political symbol that is being appropriated by cycling advocates in order to problematize the alienated city colonized by cars, appropriated by business interests and neglected by the political representation. Politicizing Sexualities: Mobilization practices and networking within the LGBTQ movement in contemporary Madrid

This ethnographic study intends to explain the recent mobilization practices within the LGBTQ movement in contemporary Madrid in reference to the strategic use of identity and networking in collective action. It describes the Spanish movement as an ideologically polarized heterogeneous aggregate. The active challenging groups criticize the dominant part of the movement for giving up its original message of sexual liberation and diluting it in consumerism by supporting capitalist tendencies and the power of leading political parties. Via launching protest campaigns and collaborating in internationally supported networks with other ideologically related social movement communities, the challenging groups demand civil rights for all people, regardless of their sexual orientation or identity. They mobilize upon the collective identity of "precariousness" while integrating elements of queer and transgender theory into their radical leftist oriented politics in order to transform the Spanish society. By bringing on new critical ideas and adherents, the success of the leftist oriented challenging groups has an impact on the direction of the politics of the dominant group, which thereby is forced to adopt such ideas into their politics. Sociological interpretation of hippies movement

My bachelor thesis explores the hippie movement, which emerged in the middle of the sixties in the United States of America. The theoretical framework consists of sociological concepts of culture, subculture, youth and youth subcultures, communities, communes and social movements. The hippie movement was young people's response to middle class consumerism, which preferred material prosperity to moral and cultural values. The American transcendentalist movement and the Beat Generation can be considered its intellectual precursor. The movement's main characteristic was rejection of middle class values. Therefore, some authors have called it a counterculture. Hippies gave up studies and tangible assets. Typical for them was lack of confidence in the future, interest in oriental philosophy and religion, close relationship to nature, specific clothing style, living in communes and the use of drugs, especially LSD. The movement dissipated at the end of the sixties. Its influence is still evident in the effort to fight for human rights, peace, free network, but also in music and clothing. Strategy variability in anti-corruption NGOs

The bachelor's thesis Strategy Variability in Anti-Corruption NGOs deals with the question whether hard human and material resources are related to the choice of strategies used by selected anti-corruption NGOs active in the Czech Republic or not. The thesis aims to reveal this influence by comparing the ascertained information about their resources and strategies according to the resource mobilization theory and to a strategic approach to social movements. The information gained from the organizations' documents and from interviews and questionnaires conducted with their representatives shows that the amount of material and human resources is not related to the strategies. However, the financial resources and time for which the organization has been active are linked to the choice of strategies. Those that have been active for a long time have the widest range of strategies and use the strongly confrontational strategies less often. Another finding is that publicly financed organizations resources have access to the advisory and working bodies of the government and, unlike the rest of the organizations, they have the possibility to use this strategy.
