Kaňková, Martina ; Nigrin, Tomáš (advisor) ; Handl, Vladimír (referee)

Whereas during the first poll in June 2008 Irish rejected the Treaty, 16 months later it was accepted by an expressive majority, when almost half a million people more voted for it. The thesis clarifies, which elements caused a totally different course and result, explores opinions of individual players such as political parties, government, trade unions, associations of interest or significant companies, observes course of the campaign before the referendum, summarizes and analyses outcomes and subsequent reactions both on national and Union level. From the discovered facts the thesis concludes, that behind the change of attitude of the Irish stood especially external effects. On one side pressure of the other member states of the Union and even the EU as a whole to finalize the process of institutional reform and also explicit refusal of repeating the scenario from 2005, when ratification of the Treaty establishing a Constitution for Europe was terminated after disagreement of France and the Netherlands. Proposition 8 on Same-Sex Marriages in California in 2008: Campaign and Opinion Polls
Navrátilová, Kristýna ; Calda, Miloš (advisor) ; Schulzová, Helena (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with same-sex marriage in California. In November 2008 Californian voters approved with small margin constitutional amendment called Proposition 8. This amendment defined marriage as union of one man and one woman. There was very intensive campaign by both opponents and supporters of this ballot initiative. In the first part this thesis analyzes the arguments used in the campaign and tries to clarify them using the previous court decisions and valid laws. The most important and used arguments are about upbringing and education of children, religion, civil rights and traditional marriage. The analysis shows that almost all the arguments that opponents of same-sex marriage are using, were rejected by courts in previous cases or the statements don't rely on facts and existing laws. The second part deals with public opinion polls before voting day and hypotheses, why Proposition 8 succeeded even though the polls indicated otherwise. The most probable explanation appears to be that majority of voters still opposed same-sex marriage. Only some of them didn't realized that if they are against same-sex marriage, they should vote for Proposition 8.
Nórsko a integrácia do EÚ - vnútroštátne a medzinárodné aspekty
Šťastný, Tomáš ; Kučerová, Irah (advisor) ; Karlas, Jan (referee)
This thesis is based on the historical base, a deep look at the Norwegian referendum results and public opinion development. We concentrated on three research questions and on three related hypotheses studying Norway history, Norwegian politics and the possibilities of Norwegian integration to the European Union. We studied intrastate and also international aspects of this integration process. The Nordic cooperation is very important for this research. This Nordic cooperation provided a platform for alternative economic cooperation and this cooperation is also a special first stage on the way to the EU. We fulfilled the thesis goals, we answered the research questions and we verified all three hypotheses. In conclusion, we think that Norwegian admission to the EU is unreal nowadays because there are non-sufficient economic and non- economic reasons and stimuli for that. Norwegian political parties are not interested in this topic because this topic is very risky. Moreover, Norwegian public opinion is against the full membership in the EU.
