The aim of this thesis is a commented translation of a French text and its theoretical annotation. The source text was selected from the book À la table des seigneurs, des moines et des paysans du Moyen Âge, which deals with food in mediaeval France. The theoretical part of the work concerns the translation analysis of the source text and then it focuses on specific problems and particular proceedings of the translation. It also provides a typology of translation shifts.

The Bachelor thesis consists of two main parts - the first one is a translation of two chapters from a French publication called L'épopée du jazz. Du blues au bop, the second one presents a commentary of the translation. The source text ranks among popular science books dealing with the history of jazz music. The translation comprises the first and the fifth chapter of the source text describing the origins of jazz music and the style called bop. In the commentary, the source text is analysed from the textual and contextual point of view, and diverse problems of translation and their solutions are examined.

The first part is a Czech translation of a selected part of an essay written by Pierre Bayard entitled Comment parler des lieux où l'on n'a pas été ? This essay, published in 2012, is a sequel to the author's previous book (published in 2007) Comment parler des livres que l'on n'a pas lus ? which was written in a similar format. The second part is a commentary consisting of an analysis of the original text, a description of the translation methods and the most significant problems of translation that have occurred during the translation process. Part one introduces a selection of translated parts from an interview with Jane Birkin from the book Gainsbourg par ses interprètes (portraits, témoignages et entretiens) by a french journalist Frédéric Régent, a very enthusiastic "Gainsbourgiste". Part two presents the commentary and analyses of the original text along with a description of the translation methods used and the most significant translation issues faced.
