The American Media System and Political Parallelism: From Internal to External Pluralism
Charvát, Šimon ; Křeček, Jan (advisor) ; Nečas, Vlastimil (referee)
This bachelor's thesis examines the changing media system in the United States. Previously, the U.S. media system was seen as having the highest quality of journalism and its journalists as the greatest professionals. Due to the innovation of technology and increasing commercialization, the American media system is undergoing a major transformation. Part of this transformation is the transition from a media model of internal pluralism to one of external pluralism. In recent decades, the private American media, which were characterised by their impartiality and political balance, have begun to take committed positions and to side with political affiliations. Through a research of media science and political communication theories, followed by a structured synthesis, this paper aims to answer the question of why, when, and for what partial reasons this transformation occurred. This thesis will first describe the systems understanding of democracy and the integral role of the media system within it, place the American media system in historical context, and introduce the reader to theoretical models of media systems. It will describe aspects of the media system such as political parallelism and commercialization and then offer possible reasons behind this transformation. This work can serve as a...
Media and policy-representation of political parties in selected czech newspaperes in the period before the elections to the PS PČR in 2010
Kocourková, Nikola ; Nečas, Vlastimil (advisor) ; Křeček, Jan (referee)
The diploma thesis Media and Politics - Political Parties in Selected Czech Newspapers in the Period Before the Elections to the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of Czech Republic in 2013 compares the representation of selected Czech political parties in the content of Czech national serious daily newspapers through quantitative content analysis of news in dailies Hospodářské noviny, Mladá fronta Dnes, Lidové noviny a Právo. The thesis explores the space which was given to individual political parties in studied newspapers, how often they were mentioned in the news, whether the approach of the parties in the news were balanced, and if the parties were neutrally presented in each daily news. The main aim of this thesis is to determine whether the Czech press is showing signs of political parallelism and whether it is objektive to political parties. The theoretical framework of the thesis is the theory of political parallelism as percieved by Daniel C. Hallin and Paolo Mancini and objectivity of the media as percieved by Jörgen Westerståhl. The research draws on the foreign literature and also draws from research in this area that in the past took place abroad.

Comparison of Liberal and Democratic Corporatist Media Models in 2018
Davidová, Barbora ; Hanák, Peter (advisor) ; Miessler, Jan (referee)
The bachelor thesis deals with the comparison of the media systems of Great Britain, Ireland, Germany and Sweden, following the work of Hallin and Mancini's Comparing Media Systems: Three Models of Media and Politics. Using the example of these four countries, it tries to find out whether there is still a clear boundary between media systems in Liberal and Democratic Corporatist countries, or whether media systems converge towards the Liberal model as Hallin and Mancini predicted. The thesis is divided into a theoretical and an analytical part. The theoretical part introduces the term "media system" and also several different typologies of media systems with special emphasis on Hallin and Mancini's typology. The analytical part compares national media systems according to four parameters: the structure of media markets, the degree of political parallelism, professionalization of journalism and the role of the state - each of these parameters is described in a separate chapter. The work uses data from recent research, publications and articles and compares them with data from the original Hallin and Mancini's publication. It attempts to describe as accurately as possible the present state of the media systems of the four above mentioned countries, both individually and in total. Findings of the...

A journalist as a politician - case study of Martin Komárek
Davidová, Adéla ; Moravec, Václav (advisor) ; Osvaldová, Barbora (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with the process of transition of professional journalists into active policy. By exploring a particular journalist, it tries to reach a general conclusion on what motivates journalists to become politics. The subject of the thesis is to place this phenomenon in the context of journalistic ethics and to find answers to whether it is possible to practice both professions at the same time - eventually in what form. The thesis is methodologically conducted as a case study and combines a thorough interview with content analysis. Martin Komárek, the main actor of case studies, has been a long-standing commentary of Mladá fronta, later Mladá fronta DNES. In 2013, he decided to leave the media and became a member of the political movement ANO 2011 founded by billionaire Andrej Babiš. It was Martin Komárek who criticized Babiš several times in his texts as a reporter. His change of opinion on Andrej Babiš was therefore a great surprise. Further examples of five selected journalists who made a similar decision as Martin Komárek did and entered into politics are given in the third part of the thesis.
Blending of political and media power: The case of Radek John and his programme Bez cenzury
Štrup, David ; Hájek, Roman (advisor) ; Moravec, Václav (referee)
This thesis considers the role of former politician and journalist Radek John in an investigative programme Bez cenzury on TV Barrandov. Even though John was a politician and leader of Czech political party Věci veřejné, he decided to return to journalism. He did so with no intention of resigning his chair in the Chamber of Deputies, part of the Parliament of the Czech Republic. With this in mind, this could be considered as a specific representation of political parallelism. This study describes specific cases where Radek John might have acted contrary to normative journalistic values and journalism ethics. Furthermore, the thesis analyses the possibility that Radek John's own political interests and opinions affected the television programme itself. The research is conducted using the method of a case study which combines qualitative and quantitative content analysis, qualitative interviews and other research methods. Consequently, the analysis found signs of biased reporting in the programme's introduction and some stories, which reflected Radek John's antipathy towards traditional political parties and their leaders. However, the research did not reveal any direct support of Věci veřejné or their representatives. Furthermore, the thesis also presents media, academic and political responses to...
