The Conception of Virginity in Greek Culture

Maidenhood is an interesting topic in the context of ancient Greek mythology and ritual. Despite the fact that women had a marginal position within the Greek polis, they were important in myth and ritual. Maidens in particular played an interesting part in Greek myth and ritual, mainly because they were in a transitional state between childhood and womanhood. Myths and rituals concerning maidens involve the goddesses Artemis and Hera, who help them with this transition. At the same time, this transitional state of maidenhood helped the girls learn to be women. Maidenhood transformed them from "wild" children into women ready to accept their roles as mothers and wives. One of the key questions that I would like to answer is how Greeks defined the concept of maidenhood. The maidens in myth and ritual that I'm concerned with are for example Pythia, Pandora, Atalanta or the Danaides. But who was a maiden? Why was she such an important figure in myth and ritual? To find an answer to this question I have turned to ancient Greek texts concerning the anatomy and health of women, and ancient Greek mythology and rituals have helped me interpret them. In the context of Greek thought, maidens were self-consistent in a way. They were pure, untouched and that is where their power came from.

Baroque legends and cults of virgin martyrs

5 Abstract The theme of my thesis is baroque legends and cults of virgines capitales. The introduction into the topic is covered by three chapters dedicated to hagiography, baroque literature and baroque piety. This general part is followed by chapters concerning virgines capitales, their legends and baroque cults. Focusing mainly on baroque legend collections originating in Czech lands, I also take into account the medieval hagiographic tradition. In my thesis I cover multitude of manifestations of esteem towards virgines capitales, such as pilgrimages to places dedicated to them, folklore plays and other folk customs.

How women relate to their "virginity loss"

This bachelor's thesis deals with the topic of virginity loss focusing on its understanding and perception by women of various sexual identifications, because the virginity loss is an important moment in a woman's life. The research is qualitative, with seven women participating - four heterosexual and three non-heterosexual identities aged in the range of 20 - 24 years. Data was collected through interviews via an online platform from March to April 2021. The work focuses on the moment of the first sexual experience, the definition of key terms, ideas and feelings associated with the first sexual experience and the impact on subsequent intimate life. This work is based on existing sociological frameworks, which are described in the theoretical part. It presents that a woman may not perceive first sexual experience as a virginity loss and the virginity loss may not be the beginning of an intimate life. It is necessary to analyze the ideas, definitions and feelings that a woman perceives in connection with the virginity loss and the moment of her first sexual experience to understand the perception of virginity loss.

A Woman in the times of late ancient period and early christianity. Virgin, wife, widow.

The aim of this bachelorete thesis is to show how women were percepted in the age of early christianity on the basis of selected Latin early church fathers's tracts. It is characteristic, that we can't include a perception of women themselves, as we don't have many preserved sources. In the thesis, there is shortly characterised a state of Roman and Jewish woman, too, as the state of early christian woman is mostly based on it. I worked with the tracts of church fathers which were translated to Czech or English laguage and I partly included Latin originals (Jerome, Tertullian, Cyprian, Augustine, Amborse), whose analysis are sorted chronologically. The thesis is divided in three main chapters called "Virgin", "Wife" and "Widow", where I focus on the perception of church fathers on every mentioned phase of life of woman. They mostly rely on perceptions of apostle Paul in the New testament espistel, but they surely work with other parts of the Old and New testament. I came to a conclusion, that opinions of these men authors are often divided, but all of them agree, that the ideal state for a woman is being a virgin, or live at sexual abstinence. Augustine's doctrine on marriage in his treatise De bono coniugali

The work is going to analyze Augustine's treatise De bono coniugali and its importance for the theology of marriage. After presenting the concept of marriage as an institution in the Roman empire and in writings of selected authors of Christian East and West in the first four centuries and also considering the developing monastic tradition, it is further dealing with the personality and works of Augustine of Hippo, especially with his treatise De bono coniugali; not only in the context of a response to then controversies, but especially as a first formalized and structured science of a church father on marriage. The represantation of ideal female in the work of Tomáš Štítný

The Bachelor work specializes in religious moral-educational literature in the period of the second half of the 14th century to beginning of the 15th century, which is thematically concentrated on figure and education of ideal type of woman. Theoretical base of work brings a vision of medieval human beings, its classification in society, women position within framework of this diagram and reflection of this all in contemporary moral-educational writings. This situation is integrated to a context of the Czech literature. According to this there is presented a typical genre of this age (treatise), which brings that vision of ideal christian woman. Basis for women question is analysis of Tomáš Štítný's work Teatrise of three states, from which an ideal type of woman is abstracted in a view of Christian theological teaching.
